the first regular meeting of the maryland club was held in saucon hall on monday night as well as the business meeting a smoker and a general good time went to make the evening pass most pleasantly this organization was started by the seniors and this was the first time the juniors and sopho mores have been in attendance the two lower classes showed their in terest and enthusiasm though and in all there were forty members present dr drinker and professor thay er who are honorary members gave short talks that were very en couraging it was decided to have a box party at one of the leading thea ters in baltimore on the night of december 26th maryland songs were sung and the meeting took on a more informal aspect refresh ments were served and the ding bat artists brumbaugh garrison and stey en s furnished music for the occasion the club pin will consist of the seal of the state with maryland over the top and lehigh under it the membership is confined to the three upper classes the following are the officers president walton 07 vice-presi dent anders 07 secretary and treasurer steele 07 the regular monthly meeting of the mechanical engineering so ciety was held monday night december 17th swope called the meeting to order and the minutes of the last meetinp were read and approved the treasurer then gave his report papers were then read by klar oq and moore 07 klar told of the manufacture of hollow ware confining his talk al most entirely to name plates one kind of this ware is commonly known as brittainia ware and is made of a combination metal con sisting principally of tin and lead this is first cast into mold's about six inches square and 5-8 inch thick then this goes through two rolling processes giving addi tonal length but keeping the same width the strip is cut up into de sired lengths which are blocked or pressed into the shapes by means of a block and die and a power press the plates are then trimmed and polished and are ready to have the dluring the past two years the young men's christian associa tion has offered a course of lec tures to the student body and to the friends of the university which has brought to the community men famous throughout the country in accordance with the custom of previous years the course about to be presented will be of an unusually high standard and will be made up of men representing the most intellectual and cultured entertain ment obtainable on the american platform in order that this course may ap peal to various tastes of many people an effort has been made to bring together four attractions consisting of a representative of the national political situation a concert company of high repute a man of varied distinguished per sonality as an author engineer and artist and lastly a reader of pecu liar uniqueness the first lecturer honorable ohamp clark united states con gressman from missouri has achieved instant and unprecedent ed success and has enjoyed a con stant and increasing prestige throughout the country as debater and thinker he leads the first rank in or out of congress and his personal friend's and the multitude who have heard him place him on the roll of distinguished statesmen with henry clay and webster the following comments from the press show champ clark's na tion 1 popularity and reputation washington d c post champ clark was the next speaker and he proved a great favorite his language and style of delivery were such that his remarks were punc tuated at almost every sentence with such a roar of applause that he found it difficult to proceed lousiana mo times — mis souri has reason to be proud of champ clark's oratorical achieve ments during his service in con gress he has attracted more atten tion to his state and has knocked out bigger niches in the temple of fame as an orator than any man perhaps of his age who ever held a seat in congress for a similar period he made a speech to tam many which set the entire nation talking he has delivered speeches in congress which were published in the papers of foreign lands ; he has pronounced orations which are classed by competent authorities as amonar the world's best the second speaker of the course will be professor paul m pear son member of the faculty of swarthmore college and editor of talent during the past year mr pear son lectured 107 times more than half of the lectures being return en gagements in the two years that mr pearson has been in the east he has been recalled to several places as many as four times he is without question one of the most interesting lecturers of the present time his ability is shown not alone in the acute analysis of an author's works but also in read ings he is not a reader in the or dinary sense of the word for the reader often fails to grasp the full : import of the author's meaning ;
