lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday january 8 1907 robert h sayre no 27 vol xiv basket=ball death of one of the original trustees of lehigh university mr robert h sayre well known as an engineer and philan thropist and a trustee of the uni versity since its foundation died at his late home on wyandotte street on friday night january 4th after a brief illness he was born on october 13 1824 and was i mauch chunk and summit hill i were all under his direction and i supervision during this period of his en jgineering activity he was sought out by judge packer who had known him as a boy and had been favorably impressed with his de calendar wednesday january 9 glee club practice at 2.15 p m in christmas hall bp m c e so ciety meeting thursday jan 10 arts and science club meets in saucon hall at 8 o m friday jan 11 lecure in phys lab at 11.30 by mr dubois bp 111 joint meeting of all societies in williams flail for mr dubois special lecture the january meeting of the arts and science club will be held in saucon hall on the evening of thursday january the 10th the papers will deal with subjects con nected with physics and mathe matics as follows : the history of algebra carl w mitman 09 static and dynamic electricity robert n miller 08 astronomy rollin l.charles 07 the principle ofthe conservation of energy j f freedman 07 notice arts and science the basket ball game scheduled for thursday night with dart mouth has been cancelled by dart mouth it is probable that there will be a earne next saturday nip-ht instead of the smoker that was announced before christmas c e society lehigh 129 albright 11 in a very slow game of basket ball saturday night lehigh handy ily defeated albright by a score of 129 to 11 our men showed very good form in handling the ball and exhibited excellent team work lehigh started the game with a rush and succeeded in rolling up 2k noints before albright scored before the end of the half albright threw one goal from foul and one from field the half closed with the score 79 to 3 at the beginning of the second half osbourne troutman street and porter were replaced by and erson lawson kramer and davies with this practically new team lehigh did almost as well as in the first half the half ending with the score 129 to 11 for lehigh travis porter am street did the best playing capt travis throwing 21 field goals during the game and also five goals from fouls the game was free from rough ness most of the penalties being for holding the line-up follows : lehigh albright osbourne forward milnor anderson troutman forward criste lawson street center kelchner kramer travis capt guard stauffer porter guard croman davies goals from field travis 21 por ter 9 street 9 troutman 4 os bourne 2 lawson 3 davies 4 kramer 4 anderson 6 milnor 2 criste 2 goals from fouls kelch ner 3 travis 5 fouls albright 6 i^ehigh 9 referee mr clark time of halves 20 and 15 minutes robert h sayra more than eighty-two years old at the time of his death mr sayre's boyhood days were spent in mauch chunk where he re ceived the education afforded by the schools of that town exhibiting particular aptitude for mathematics in 1840 he entered an engineer corps under e a douglas engaged in enlarging morris canal it was after the great flood of the lehigh river in 1841 while occupied on the repairs to the works of the lehigh coal and navigation company that he showed such ability as to gain the regard and apprecation of his superior officers leading to his steady advancement to various positions of responsibility the lo cation and constructon of several railroads , the opening of mines , the apparatus for preparing coal and the machinery used on the early inclined planes and the switchback railroad between jvelopraent so that after eleven rears of service with the lehigh coal and navigation co he be i came in 1852 chief engineer of the lehigh valley railroad after j the ooening of the line in 1855 he was appointed general superin i tendent remaining in charge of the road for many years with the ex it eption of the period from 1882 to 1885 when he was president of the southern pennsylvania railroad a proposed line between harrisburg and pittsburg projected by the vauderbilt interests a compro mise between the vanderbilt and pennsylvania interests left this road incomplete and unneed'ed and mr say re returned to
