several letters of former gradu ates were read by prof eckfeldt the men going out from this course are making it famous by their good work f hopkinson smith the regular monthly meeting of the electrical society was held last monday evening although the attendance was not as large as usual the meeting was full of the interest and enthusiasm which is so characteristic of the society the program opened with a paper by e l wilson 08 on automatic devices in a modern power station mr wilson gave a complete account of the various devices and appliances which make the operation of a modern plant economical and efficient the paper was well prepared and was il lustrated by excellent drawings and blue prints mr seyfert followed with a talk on electric locomotives the various kinds of locomotives were discussed at length the advantages and disadvantages of each type be ing well brought out the struc tural characters arrangement of motors and methods of transmis sion were all completely covered in conclusion mr seyfert com pared the electric with the steam locomotive should electric power be used only one-half the number of locomotives would be required to accomplish the same work the cost of maintenance considerably favors the electric besides these advantages the electric locomotive has higher overload capacity high acceleration and more power per unit for the same weight president lawson concluded the program with a paper on electri cal equipment of the st clair coal co every phase of the coal mining industry was discussed with regard to the application of electric power the advantages of elec tricity over steam in mine opera tion was illustrated by numerous examples in this particular mine electrical appliances are used wher ever possible and have been found to lessen the cost of maintenance and at the same time increase the efficiency of the plant the meeting adjourned to the second floor where numerous bits of food stuff evaporated into vacuity helped on by music from the quartette and an abundance of witty tales the regular monthly meeting of the arts and science club was held on wednesday evening feb 13 at the home of president drinker the club was delightfully entertained by dr and mrs drinker and a very enjoyable evening was spent before the reading of the papers the matter of lehigh rejoining the intercolleg ate oratorical association was brought up lehigh belonged to this associaton until two years ago when she forfeited member ship by failing to send a represen tative to the annual debate a com mittee consisting of woodring kinsey and heck was apointed to confer with the faculty about the advisability of lehigh rejoining the association this was psychology and philo sophy night the first paper present ed being the psychology of sug gestion by russell davenport bell 08 mr bell's paper tended to show how certain events and the trend of a person's mind follow from suggestion he also showed that hypnotism depended upon this same thing using one definition of hypnotism as a state of complete amenability to suggestion or a state of complete suggestibility the second paper of the evening was entitled the philosophy of herbert spencer by joseph b reynolds 07 mr reynolds gave spencer's views on the various problems of life such as the origin of life ethics evolution and others the paper showed very careful preparation and is to be commended for its treatment of so difficult a subject as herbert spencer the last paper of the evening mental heredity was delivered by raymond walters 07 that genius depends upon inheritance and not on environment or educa tion was the contention of the speaker prof mecklin of lafayette was also a guest of dr drinker's and delighted the club with a short talk which was much enjoyed after partaking of excellent refresh ments the club with many expres sions of good will to their host and hostess bade them good night gym meet ramsay pennypacker 04~'07 has returned from cobalt ontario canada to resume his studies at the university john w dalman 96 superin tendent of construction of the standard oil co was married to mrs jackson i case widow of j i case founder of the noted thrashing machine and plow works mr case died suddenly a few years ago he is said to have left a for tune of from 6,000,000 to 10 000,000 the annual dinner of the north eastern pensylvania lehigh club was held at the westmoreland club last saturday and was not only the largest but also the most successful lehigh dinner ever held in that vicinity the interest of the alumni has increased steadily un til at the present time the as sociation which a few years ago was very quiescent has become one of the most flourishing of the le high clubs a business meeting at seven o'clock resulted in the election of the following officers to serve the ensuing year : president e l bevan scran ton ; first vice president g e shepherd wilkes-barre second vice president robt r harvey , wilkes-barre ; secretary and treasurer mr charles enzian wilkes-barre advisory board w a lathrop w h dean wilkes-barre col arthur long scranton following the business session the meeting adjourned to the main dining room where steward hunt had prepared an appetizing menu after a zigzag route through th various courses the coffee and cigars were finally reached when the professional conciliator s d warriner was introduced as toastmaster for the occasion mr warriner proved that he knows how to hand out other things be sides peace propaganda and showed that he had his forces we'll in hand the set speeches were all of an excellent character and prov ed highly interesting those who responded at the request of the toastmaster and the program were w h dean who told us how to fashion and warp the infant prodi gies and show them the proper way prof w s franklin repre senting the faculty responded to the toast electro-cants and open ed his remarks with the apparently irrelevant one that in the early days when he first recalled his native state of kansas bath tubs were un known there after a masterly comparison of the relative color of the missouri as found in kansas with that of the lehigh river at south bethlehem to the disparage ment of the latter it was plainly apparent that the professor's know ledge of germs and other electrical bugs had its origin and inspiration in the waters of these muddy streams and all because of the aforesaid shortage of bath-tubs in the blossoming state of kansas e l bevan of scranton and whom the program erroneously lehigh vs rutgers saturday at 8 p m change of time the 3rd lecture of the associa tion course to be given by mr f honinkson smith on next mon day evening will undoubtedly attract a large number of people interested in the eminent engineer and author hi success on the platform has be come so well known that there is no one more widely sought after than the man who has become famous as the creator of colonel carter of cartersville a gentle man vagabond etc those who have heard mr smith carry with them the most vivid recollections of a man of ir resistible personality and having a remarkable power of pleasing his course of lectures at har vard according to the boston herald proved most thoroughly delightful and were enjoyed by audiences made up of the most appreciative and cultured people of cambridge and boston note the change of time of this lecture from tuesday evenng 19th to monday evening the ibth f u kenedy 07 is attending a convention of pi beta phi sorority good luck mike continued on fourth page the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday february 15 1907 no 34 alumni meeting e m meeting arts and science e e society vol xiv holds an interesting meeting also banquet at wilkes-barre discussion on coal mining entertained by dr drinker the monthly meeting of the mining society wednesday even ing was given to coal mining before the papers were read the joint meeting with columbia and lafayette was discussed no de finite arrangements could be made owing to the wavering attitude assumed by columbia and lafa yette a communication from the chemical society inviting the min ers to hear h s miner 88 at their next meetng was read and ac cepted business completed andrew carnegie ramsey gave a discussion of the revolvable tipple dump by means of large blue prints and a well rendered talk mr ramsey pave a clear idea of the working principles of the tipple and of the arrangement for dumping coal cars mr daniels who was elected to honorary membership gave a very interesting discussion on extempor aneous speaking
