the judges were dr a c rother mel of kutztown harlan s miner 88 of gloucester city n j and robert s siegel 95 of bethlehem hensel's address the principal address of the day was then delivered by hon w 11 hensel of lancaster mr hensel spoke or wealth and worth he cited washington as the richest citizen of his day and referred to him as the exemplar of the moral quality of wealth the speaker declared thai it is the inherent tendency of man kind thoughout all nature to acquire increase retain and transmit material possessions and he regretted the pre vailing tendency to attack wealth as ill advised and tending to hamper tlie development of the country adding it is an age of business of physical and material developments of indus trial energy and organization of me chanical achievement and scientific discovery but all these forces which have made the modern world so rich are of divine origin labor and ge nius applied to the soil and sea and sky have in every age produced aaiealth its acquisition thus has been the common experience the protec tion of property has been the aspira tion of every abiding nation the spirit of commerce business trade the organization of industry and em ployment of labor prompted by the hope of gain and the desire to accu mulate wealth have tended to pro mote the higher life of man instead of deadening his spiritual and intel lectual faculties they accentuate and stimulate them the rich of the country as a class and its wealth as a rule have been faithful in every time of peril tne wealth of the world to-day stands for universal law order peace and jus tice and against misrule revolution war and oppression mr hensel recited the names of the leading men of the colonial period all of whom gave of their wealth and services in the cause of freedom and then said in no age of the world and in no country on the map has wealth given more enerous recognition to intellec tual genius moral elevation spiritual necessities and aesthetic culture the rich are getting richer likewise and more so the poor there never was a time in the history of the world or of any other country when and where the moral and material condition of the poor was as was awarded to v e mccann the second of 15 to w m donaldson the third of 10 to t king joseph f klein d e head of the department of mechanical engineer ing acted on behalf of the faculty in presenting mr hamerschlag mr taylor said — mr president on the recommen dation of the faculty and by the au thority of the board of trustees we present arthur arton hamerschlag for the degree of doctor of science this being the second honorary degree ever granted by lehigh university we present him as a man distinguish ed for his work with and love of boys a teacher an engineer and a consulting expert a member of the american association for the advancement of science the society for the promotion of engineering education and the american institute of electrical en gineers the engineers society of western pennsylvania and now head and director of the carneige technical schools of pittsburg pa his work in the promotion of technical educa tion in the building up of those great industrial schools has been so suc cessfully and wisely pursued that it is impossible to do justice in the space of this presentation to all that he has accomplished lehigh feels that in enrolling him in her list of honorary alumni a bond of kindly union is established between the car neige technical schools and lehign that shall be enduring and we wel come him to our halls and to our hearts as one highly worthy to main tain lehigh's traditions and record of scholarship and earnest work at the close of mr taylor's presenta tion address the degree was conferred by president drinker the exercises concluded with the singing of the alima mater by the entire audience the student body congregated out side the chapel and greeted dr hamerschlag with three good le highs dr hamerschlag responded in a neat little speech in which he ex pressed a desire for close relations be tween the two schools oratorical contest — address by hon w u hensel — degree of doctor of science conferred on arthur arton hammerschlag before an audience which taxed the capacity of packer memorial church lehigh fittingly observed the 175tti anniversary of the birth of george washington the series of events in emded the annual junior oratorical contest the conferring of the honor ary degree of doctor of science on afniur arton hamerschlag director or the carnegie technical schools of pittsburg and an address on wealth and v/orth by hon w u hensel ex attorney general of pennsylvania a notable feature of the celebration was the loyalty and enthusiasm dis played by the alumni special traius bringing large numbers of them from pittsburg philadelphia new york scranton and wilkes-barre among the distinguished men pres ent was a large delegation from pitts burg comprising representatves from the boards of trustees of the carne gie technical schools and the carne gie institute and the educational es tablishments public and private of pittsburg following is a list of the guests from pittsburg mr and mrs a a hamerschlag mr and day's unskilled la bor so easily supplied all the necessi ties of life and commanded so many of its luxuxries referring to the charge that wealth bred trusts and monopolies mr hen sel said tat it was but another form of the old cry against labor-saving machinery adding — association of corporations to a common end and combinations of wealth to a single purpose are not per se immoral unconstitutional or hurt ful to the general welfare since these combinations peculiarly ameri can have been effected american trade and business have taken a place in the commerce of nations never be fore known with increased demand for industrial efficiency and cheapened production — the magnitude of modern undertakings and the necessity upon men of great fortunes to give stability to their interests combinations of corporations have now come just as naturally and as inevitably as part nership and joint stock associations superseded individual enterprise and were succeeded in turn by corpora tions the accumulation of wealth has al ways been and must always be fol lowed by its distribution and the processes are alike healthful to the comonwealth is philadelphia any poorer or any worse because the prophetic eye of its merchant mariner stephen girard nigh a century ago foresaw the wealth of anthracite land holdings and of central city real estate and as a con sequence fifteen hundred orphan and homeless boys are being constantly nurtured to useful manhood by his perennial beneficience is pennsylvania any poorer or any worse because the skillful and eco nomical manipulation of a great nat ural resouce laid the foundations of a fortune which has enabled mr rockefeller to endow the cause of lib eral education with a gift such as tht world never beore saw and before the splendor of which all feats of de structive arms on land or sea must pale and slink abasned is pittsburg the busiest workshop of all the busy world poorer because above its pillar of cloud arise and shine the sunlit peaks of that twin school of the arts and sciences en dowed by the munificient bounty of andrew carnegie to teach a material age forever and forever the lesson of ueauty made the bride of use " after the exercises in the chapel a luncheon was served in the gym to out-of-town guests and alumni sev eral hundred alumni were present bubbling over with lehigh spirit and enthusiasm as taylor 76 put it it was one of lehigh's big days president drinker acted as toast master and after welcoming every body in a neat speech he presented dr hamerschlag who made an im pressive and forcible address this address with those tnat followed was taken in shorthand and will m due course be published in the brown and white we were however able to obtain at once the notes of mr w a lathrop's speech which will be of interest to every lehigh man after mr hensel had finished his address chares l taylor 76 a mem ber of the board of trustees of le high and of the board of trustees of
