the banquet of the freshman class was held thursday evening at the hotel wyandotte this was one of the most successful gather ings of first year men seen in some time over two-thirds of the class by actual count one hundred and four men were present shortly after nine o'clock the banqueters sat down to the excell ent menu a unique and elabor ate souvenir in the form of menu card was given each member of the class after the various courses had been completed president kniffen acting as toastmaster called on the following our treat . 19 10 spirit " baldy " smith the ladies " dick " street . . athletics red burrell next year's freshmen hobo simpson total ab stinence all the toasts were well-given and received hearty applause following the regular speeches were short talks by the guests of the class coach garry and cap tain mackall of the baseball team talked about the team's prospects and urged support from the first year men captain carlock spoke on the condition of the lacrosse team and the advantages of com ing out early and practicing faith fully for the team captain trout man gave a short talk on football past present and future and cap tain mcnally on track prospects the committee in charge con sisted of c c tressler chairman h s oberrender o b nieson e g rogers e c reber w a staab j w kniffen lafayette's baseball team started on their southern trip tuesday tim long ex 08 was taken along for third base maryland clubs holds smoker wednesday even ing dr drinker present about forty loyal sons of mary land met wednesday evening in the capacity of the maryland club of lehigh and held their second smoker of the year in saucon hall the business meeting opened with president walton in the chair the alumni of the various prepara tory schools of maryland were as signed a number of circular letters which they will send to the gradu ates of their respective schools the alumni of the baltimore poly technic institute reported that they had procured one of the new photo gravures of the buildings and grounds of the university and will present the same to their school at the commencement exercises in june several of the other groups are considering a similar step eight new members were initiated into the club dr drinker was then called on and gave a very interesting talk he commended the club on the manner in which it is endeavoring to arouse interest in lehigh among the preparatory schools stating that it is unique and business like further the club by such interest does more for the university than all the university authorities can hope to accomplish the success of our university depends on the interest of the alumni and under graduate bodies for the interest the club has shown it deserves to be congratulated the club then adjourned to the rich entertainment of the festive board the glad circle round them yield their souls to festive mirth and wit that knows no gall president watson acting as toastmaster called on several mem bers of the club for short talks between toasts the following musi cal program was rendered vocal quartette — baker van vleck stephens and garrison piano solo — ainrner violin solo — dorsey instrumental quartette — van vleck roberts stephens and gar rison continued on page three about 40 men reported for la crosse practice wednesday after noon large squads were out for baseball and track also the usual large enthusiastic body of embryonic electricals met at the monthly meeting tuesday evening in the physical laboratory despite the action of unpleasant at mospheric conditions the first paper of the evening by leilich 08 dealt with the electric system of the b & o railroad he gave a thorough discussion of the electric locomotives used on that road with a complete outline of the tests to which they were sub jected this was followed by a talk by f m hibbits superintendent of motive power of the lehigh val ley railroad mr hibbits gave a complete outline of railroad organ ization manner of control and method of dividing the work into various departments his address was highly appreciated the meeting adjourned to the banquet halls where music story and jim furnished entertainment the remainder of the evening the electric arc by prof w s franklin was the last number of the program numerous interest ing experiments with elaborate ap paratus were used to illustrate his talk he showed the carbon arc arcs between metals arcs between zinc explaining the phenomena peculiar to each type the tem perature of the various arcs is th 2 boiling point of the substance used the lower the boiling points the more difficult it is to maintain an arc with alternating current the lower the frequency of alternating current the harder it is to main tain an arc with any substance the greater part of voltage drop in an arc takes place at the cathode causing this to waste away faster than the anode prof franklin closed his talk with a brief sum mary of the significance of these phenomena the maryland club has started apian which it would be well for every club of its kind to consider carefully a circular letter has been made up and is being sent to every preparatory school man who graduates in maryland this year the disagreeable weather of tuesday evening served to decrease the attendance at the meeting of the arts and science club but it did not succeed in dampening the enthusiasm of the men who did turn out it was german night and three admirable papers and a lively and interesting general dis discussion constituted its program the meeting opened shortly after 8.15 o'clock with a brief unim portant business session president walters 07 being in the chair and secretary freedman 07 and trea uurer reinke 08 presenting re ports chairman sanderson 08 of the pin committee addressed the body on the subject of the new a & s c emblems the first paper of the evening was a careful and creditable trans lation by floyd f hesse 09 of gottfried keller's " tanzlegend chen edwin e reinke ob next spoke on " longfellow's german translations giving examples of the poet's merits and defects by citations judgment being applied by goethe's ideal of translation mr reinke's paper revealed an exhaustive study and a thorough grasp of his material " die ver sunkene glocke •' hauptman's much discussed play was the sub ject of an able contribution by mr reginald beck 06 before at tempting any treatment of the work the speaker gave a full account of its action and characters the re sume of the various interpretations by different critics was most inter esting just what the play does mean is a matter of uncertainty was beck's conclusion in the general discussion that followed dr woods prof blake and mr weston of the faculty took part numerous questions on the subjects of their papers were put to the speakers by upper class members of the club this discus sion as usual formed a valuable part of the evening's program refreshments were served upon adjournment dr drinker returned from his trip to
