the members of the mining and geological society were de lightfully entertained on monday night by dr and mrs drinker at their home on the campus prof j w richards gave a very interesting talk on the use of enriched air in modern blast ifurnace work some simple chemical or physical process will probably be discovered for increas ing the per cent of oxygen in a blast and consequently increasing the output of a blast furnace the other papers read were the warrior run explosion by caje tan morsack 08 and coal mining in the united kingdom by w r meyers 07 college lecture senior group pictures sunday 2 p m class book committee mccaa's studio monday 12 m miners william's hall monday 12.15 p.m mechanicals williams hall tuesday 12 m classicals pack er hall wednesday 12 m electricals physical lab the next college lecture will be given by our old friend dr h w wiley chief of the united states bureau of chemistry the date of the lecture will be friday april 19 subject to be announced later class day elections at a meeting of the senior class held wednesday noon the follow ing men were elected to the various class day offices poet reynolds tablet orator woodring prophet treverton presentation orator m l h smith ivy orator hanst penn relay races lehigh has been placed in class 111 for the relay races at philadel phia on april 27 which also in cludes c c n v rutgers haver ford carlisle western maryland and dickinson princeton game mercersberg alumni all graduates of mercersberg academy will please meet at the kapp sigma house on delaware avenue at three o'clock on sun day afternoon some important matters are to be considered in cluding the possible formation of a mercersberg club the baseball game with prince ton was cancelled late on tuesday afternoon by the princeton man agement on account of the muddy condition of the field harlan s miner 88 delivered a lecture on the incandescent man tel industry on wednesday night before the philadelphia lehigh club ' lehigh opened her lacrosse season on wednesday afternoon on lehigh field and succeeded in administering a defeat to her oppo nents owing to the steady fall of sleet and snow and the high wind the attendance was comparatively small yet that enthusiastic ele ment so necessary to cheer a team to victory was present neither team could use their best tactics as the ground was too slippery and the wind too strong nevertheless those who braved the cold to wit ness this game were not disap pointed ■lehigh started the game with a rush and hardly had a minute elapsed before prechtl scored for lehigh so quickly was this done that it showed that the c c n y team was outwitted and outplayed r porter added another goal in a short time after the ball was car ried down the field c c n y then took a brace and brought the ball up the field for a goal but were baffled in this by the clever defensive work of carlock and barth before the ending of the ha'f lehigh scored two more goals and c c n y scored only one goal score — lehigh 4 goals c c n v 1 goal both teams started the second half with renewed determination and the pace they stt was more strenuous than before the ball was juggled back and forth neither side being able to score for some time the c c n y team work ed lehigh hard and it was only by excellent team work that r porter scored for lehigh a snow squall enveloped the entire field during the latter part of this half and made it difficult lor the players to see the ball the line-up : c c l u kasternak goal carlock thompson point j porter demartins c p barth priestly baum ist def mercur gorman hubert 2d def herzoff o la key tunstall continued on page three continued on third page the regular meeting of the civil engineering society was held in saucon hail on tuesday evening april 9 a large crowd was pres ent the following are nominations for officers president peterson and thomas advisor prof wil son secretary warnke treasurer jaggard drake moore and wolfe the first paper of the evening was by h c becker on pile dri -
