gym exhibition lehigh was represented in 1 joint gymnastic exhibition with the allentown y m c a at al lentown on wednesday by the fol lowing members of this year's team : tumbling moore brown kibler side horse young clubs frankenfiield rings scott moore young hand balancing and exhibition tumbling clarke nulty kibler parallel bars trembly brown kibler horizontal bar brown trembly clarke kibler mercersburg club was called to the chair and briefly outlined the work before the con ference he was followed by prof clark of the college of the city of new york who made a very effec tive address lie spoke first of the horrors of war as a ystallized in the rough but forcible phrase war is hell and then of the powers array ed on the side of peace these lat ter will include the ten million men and women who will graduate from american colleges during the next twenty years if the proper meas ures are taken to make of them ad vocates of peace dr drinker was the last of the older speakers in his address he drew an analogy between the pres ent condition of intercollegiate athletics and the state of interna tional relations toward which we are insensibly progressing it has taken a long time he said to develop the idea of treating rival teams as friends and guests rather than as enemies and of playing the game f or the game's sake the transition to a better way of settling international disputes will be gradual just as this change in athletic relations has been gradual and the ultimate desired result will be attained not by legislation but by the adoption by the world of that higher standard of morality and mutual kindness which will in itself bring peace ; disarmament will not make peace but will come as a consequence of the existence of tha frame of mind which makes arma ment unnecessary dr drinker's statement that he was heartily in favor of rightly conducted sports vas particularly well received by the columbia students prof moore then called on the heads of visiting delegations foi short speeches j b oarlock who was the first responded for lehigh in a few well chosen words ex pressing the hearty sympathy of the university with the peace move ■v,,f after a few others had made short addresses the following reso lution was presented and adopted resolved that it is the sense of continued on fourth page of all the numerous meetings and conferences of the national arbi tration and peace congress held this week in new york the stu dents meeting held in earl hall on tuesday morning was the most interesting from the point of view of an undergraduate lehigh s delegation consisting of j b car lock 07 h d smith 08 g d speirs 09 and j w kniffin 10 the presidents of the four class es with lewis fleck editor in chief of the brown and white and l d moore 07 of the lehigh uni versity christian association,took \ prominent part in this meeting be ing the largest representation in attendance from any college outside of new york in addition to the undergraduate contingent dr drinker was also present and his address to the as sembled representation including several co eds of more than ten different institutions was the most interesting and forceful delivered by any of the speakers in spite of the fact that the call on him to speak was wholly unexpected the meeting was called to order at 10.30 by prof g w kirchway dean of columbia university law school who had charge of the ar rangements for the conference of student delegates in a few intro ductory remarks he said that of all classes of men and women none coum be more suitably gathered to consider the promotion of interna tional peace than university men and women who have ideals and faith in the perfectability of hu man nature and human institutions after he had concluded prof john bassett moore of columbia dr ernest richard president of german-american peace society the german american peace soc iety was then inroduced he spoke of the success of the intercol legiate peace association of the middle west and the object of the present gathering which should go farthor than mere shouting and denouncing iwar ijn his words patriotism s the first plank of the platform of the intercollegiate conference , . ' ' ■, about fifteen of the twenty odd mercershurg men in college met on sunday afternoon at the kappa sigma house for the two fold pur pose of sending one of the larg"e perspective views of the campus to their alma mater and for the ulti mate formation of a permanent mercersburg club a constitution will be adopted and officers elected at the next meeting april 27 at same place everyone should be present saturday april 20 baseball c c n y at 3.00 on lehigh field lacrosse johns hopkins at balti more bp m mustard and cheese performance in grand opera house sunday april 21 l u c a meeting in saucon flail at 6.30 p m monday april 22 brown and white board meeting at 5 p m in christmas hall wednesday april 24 baseball university of pennsylvania on lehip-h field at 3 p m the senior electricals on thurs day organized a baseball team with quadenfield as captain columbia lafayette and lehigh mining societies the mining engineering soc ieties of columbia university and lafayette college will be the guests of the lehigh mining society on april 26th and 27th on the even ing of the 26th a meeting of the three societies will be held in wil liams hall and on the 27th visits will be made at the bethlehem steel works new jersey zinc works and possibly at some neigh boring cement works columbia will send a large dele gation to this meeting 1909 meeting at a meeting of the sophomore class held wednesday noon the fol lowing nominations were made for next year's officers : president harry keife uptegraff vice president coyle secretary shaw treasurer zo'llingler ; financial secretary robertson ; athletic representative jgilligan slpeirs wigton aman ; chairman of dues committee mill gelung histor ian young shultz ; epitome board adelhelm bellis cliver carrier devine dowling frome hageri buch harvey heller heckinger c keife maeder moore ridgely schealer shank spry w stob aeus walsh and wigton prof franklin attended the de dication ceremonies of the new engineering societies building at fifth avenue and 39th st new york on tuesday afternoon the brown and white vol xiv lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday april 19 1907 base ball national peace congress faculty represented by dr drinker and prof merriman le high takes prominent part in student conferei.ee no 48 calendar lehigh defeats army in an ex citing game 13-7 lehigh defeated west point on wednesday afternoon by the decis ive score of 13-7 it was an ex tremely cold day with a high wind blowing and this accounts for the number of errors made by both team and for the large scoring at the end of the fourth inning west point had attained their maximum score and were outplayed for the remainder of the game in spite of the early errors both barker and hesse pitched good ball and theii support improved with the game the courteous treatment of the cadets to the brown and white players was the best the latter have received anywhere and the team as a whole have nothing but praise for this hospitality the score by innings was as fol ' lows : w point tols o o o o 0 — 7 lehigh 300300 0.5.2 — 13 hits lehigh 12 army 9 errors army 4 lehigh 7
