club last saturday and scoring in defeating scarlet players shows exceptional ability in passing fighting team work largest possible score brown and white team wins every bout and makes almost rutgers shows short flash five falls and two decisions first maroon team rutgers was decidedly more conspicuous in taylor gymna sium saturday night by the viv idness of scralet uniforms than by the basketball ability of their team when they bowed grace fully in defeat to lehigh when earl schaub registered the last goal he brought the game to an end with a score of 40-19 and incidentally he registered the one hundred and thirty-sixth point scored by lehigh satur day by securing a victory in four different events rutgers was represented by a small hard fighting team but only toward the end of the first period did they show the necessary stren gth to cope with the rapid fire attack of the brown and white lehigh abruptly opened the game with immediate scoring when c schaub packed a foul shot and two goals into a very short time the smaller schaub was the sensation of the eve ning with his clever shooting and was easily high point man lehigh started in the game with a fast attack with c schaub smith and weinstein doing the scoring and fifteen points were amassed before rutgers found that they too had a goal rob erts opened their scoring by shooting in a long one but at best their scoring was intermit tent throughout the evening it was only when lehigh started in to shift the lineup that rutgers became dangerous and then they increased their score sufficiently con on page 4 col 7 tercollegiate wrestling associa tion has a mediocre team and had one meet before the lehigh meet which ordinarily would give them a tremendous ad vantage reed the veteran 11 5 pound class man had little dif ficulty in pinning the shoulders of his man to the mat in the short time of 2 minutes and 45 seconds with a half nelson and body hold captain best the intercollegiate champion in the 125 pound class downed his man in shorter time than reed the time being 2 minutes and 20 seconds with a half nelson and wrist lock dick lewis had no trouble in accounting for an other five points in getting a fall con on page 4 col 6 coach sheridan's matmen opened the wrestling season on saturday with syracuse univer sity with an overwhelming vic tory the final count was 3 1 0 which is almost a perfect score to use the words of the syra cuse wrestling coach the le high team is without a doubt the greatest dollege wrestling team in the country and should have little trouble in capturing the in tercollegiate wrestling crown this season the meet was the initial one for the brown and white team and by virtue of the easy man ner in which the five falls were gotten shows great strength in the lehigh varsity swimming team started on its 1926 sea son with a victory over the tra ditional rival lafayette by the score of 34-28 it was the first time in the history of the school that the maroon was ever rep resented by a tank squad the first event of the meet went to , lafayette when the brown and white relay team was disqualified lehigh took every first place but the second and third places added greatly to lafayette's score the eas tonions led up to the last event but the superior work of hobbs and hayes in the fancy dives gave the visitors a well earned victory coach gulick's team appears to be one of the best that ever represented the brown and white led by captain harmon a veteran of four years the team con on page 3 col 7 two teams almost evenly matched — lehigh takes of var ious department curricula lehigh uniuersity calendar letters read faculty meeting the faculty club opened its social activities for the new year saturday evening with a dance held in drown hall the dance was most suc cessful and was heartily enjoyed by all present dancing was continuous from 8:30 to 1 1 30 the music being provided by the lehigh collegians an excellent five piece orchestra the faculty cast aside their usual dignity for the evening and entered into the spirit of the affair with a heartiness that would hve done credit to a class of freshmen so it was in most respects a typical lehigh func tion with the exception of the usual stags who were conspic uous by their absence one of the special features of the evening was a dance in which cards were distributed among the men and women the men's cards had on them the name of the moving picture ac tor they were supposed to be and the name of the actress who was to be their partner for the dance while the women's cards had the name of the actress she was supposed to be and the name of the actor who was to be her partner consequently there was much confusion and con on page 3 col 6 lieut benjamin h rigg of the united states coast and ge odetic survey is the speaker for the january meeting of the c e society which will be held in the physics building friday evening january 22 at 8 p m in the official capacity of slides made from photographs taken by lieut rigg and other members of the party the mac millan expedition has attracted widespread inter est and articles concerning it have appeared in various issues of the magazine of the national geographic society the re sults from the data collected by the various members of the par ty will aid ma-terially in weather forecast location of aviation routes in the far north besides giving to science much import ant and hitherto unknown infor mation concerning the condi tions in the artie it is not often that the oppor tunity to hear a talk such as this is presented and members of other courses as well as the civ ils are invited fine talk given to college by tilden first college meet held on sunday speaks of the international * aspect of tennis and the davis cup very successful gathering held — faculty wives serve refreshments traffic discussed others planned changes in the curricula of the various departments of the university were considered at the faculty meeting held last monday afternoon in the mem orial building suggested changes were made by the heads of seven depart ments latin mining engineer ing biology greek spanish mathematics and economics con on page 3 col 4 the department of mathe matics proposes to combine trig onometry and solid geometry in to one term for arts and sci ences and business administra tion freshmen the second term would be given over to algebra starting with quadratics by this system a frosh can enter as an arts and science student and at the end of his first term have the requirements in math ematics to president patty presiding of primary importance was the further discussion of the pe tition of delta theta lehigh lo cal to the national fraternity of lambda chi alpha president patty read communications from men prominent in national fraternity affairs that discussed in brief and at length the na tional aspect of lambda chi alpha the great majority of the informants were unrestrain ed in their praise of lambda chi the only reservation being that of the practice of the frater nity's rapid expansion banda livingstone and others well known in interfraternity affairs commended the progressive spir it of lambda chi alpha and de clared a high degree of respect and admiration for some of their graduates however the council by not taking any new action automat ically ratified their previous stand of aversion toward the es tablishment of delta theta as the lehigh chapter of lambda chi alpha delta theta has formally petitioned lambda chi national contrary to the advice of the was not notified in time con on page 3 col 3 a local branch of a new so ciety for track and field and cross-country athletes is being fostered at lehigh by coach kanaly and several undergrad uates the full name of the so ciety is the national collegiate society of spiked shoe with headquarters in new york city it is an honor society to prom ote interests of track in colleges and to interest high school track men in coming to college an other important purpose per haps more significant than the first is to providte a common bond of interest between those bill tilden was the guest of honor and speaker of the oc casion at the college meeting of last week on the 1 4th in addi tion to tilden's speech there was a slight discussion of college af fairs and announcements bell mentioned several topics which the arcadia has been dis cussing the first had to do with the first college sing of the year which was held on sun day afternoon ; the second had to do with campus traffic reg ulations this has become ne cessary since as bell said the number of men tearing around the campus in ten-dollar fords at thirty-five an hour is such as to make fatal accidents a daily possibility since the brakes on many of these automobiles are faulty if not fictitious the plan as outlined by the arcadia is to make every car owner con nected with the university car ry a tag or license issued by the arcadia and have all traffic vi olations of a serious nature re ported to a committee consisting of three representatives two from the student body and one from the faculty this com mittee would be empowered to revoke licenses and impose fines the plan is still tentative the most important question discussed was the faculty col lection of class dues and the ar cadia fees with the consent of the w'ves of the faculty the singing was led by mil ler who has made a name for himself in mustard and cheese his leadrship was responsible for the results which were in deed gratifying there were about two hundred students pre sent and each song seemed to ring forth with more vigor than any of its predecessors lehigh songs seem to be somewhat in the rear when it comes to com parison with other colleges and the student body if examined in their songs would find that their knowledge is slight everyone who made the effort to overcome the sunday after noon lethargy which seems to be preval t everywhere was re paid by the good time which al ways ensues when a number of people get together to sing there is something about music which stirs the soul and for this reason college songs are some of the most vivid parts of college life the program of songs includ ed all of the lehigh songs that are sung today and also a few popular songs after the sing ing was over the assemblage set tled down
