lehigh university begins its for tieth scholastic year to-day the term was opened by the customary exercises in the university chapel commencing at 3.30 p m presi dent-elect henry s drinker made an address to the students ar.d in it referred to his own experiences at lehigh as a student in the early days of the university and by prac tical illustrations showed the great advance made by the university in all departments since the grad uation of his class in 1871 he paid a high tribute to his predeces sor in office dr thomas m drown who died in november last and to whom he referred as a life long friend and co-worker in th cause of technical education president drinker made tie fol lowing announcements of changes in the teaching force in the department of citil en gineering mr joseph firti has been appointed instructor mr firth is a graduate of the!rens aelear polytechnic institute teking the degree of civil engineer in 1 901 ; he held the position of in structor in mathematics and sur veying at troy in the scholastic year 1 901 1902 since 1902 lv has been engaged in the practice at en gineering as assistant and res.dent engineer in the construction of foundations water works and ew erage systems in the department of modern languages and literatures and of history dr ringer has resigned the active professorship and has accepted the appointment of pro fessor emeritus though the weight of years and the effects of a serious illness during the past sum mer have necessitated this step on the part of dr ringer we have encouraging reports of his return ing strength and good hope that lehigh may still for many years have the benefit of his advice and counsel in this department his great and faithful services to the university in the thirty-four years in which he has held this professor ship have been alike appreciated by students alumni faculty and trustees and in his retirement from active service he takes with him the tribute of respect and admira tion for his abilities and of loving remembrance of his kindly pres ence that his great ability and ge continued on page five made an exhaustive study pf tun nel practice as carried on in all parts of the world at that time the literature on tunnelling was slight and mr drinker's contribu tion in the shape of s 1200 quarto page volume dedicated to his alma mater,entitled tunnelling explo sive compounds and rjoek drills based on his experience and study not only filled a gap in the techni cal literature of america but was internationally received as the au thoritative work on tunnelling this was followed by his separate publication on rock-drills and explosive compounds commenting on lhis record the engineering news says : had the author continued in the engineering field instead of entering the legal profession doubtless he would have built up a tunnel practice un equalled by any other engineer of his time while preparing the above v/orks mr drinker also studied law and was admitted to the philadelphia bar his practice has been large and has been principally in corpor ation law his enlargement and re publication of bell's railroad and continued on page three 1 at the regular meeting of the board of trustees held on uni versity day june 14th henry sturgis drinker was unanimously elected president of lehigh uni versity to fill the office made vacant by the death of the late president dr thomas m drown last no vember air drinker was born in novem ber 1850 and was graduated from lehigh university in 1871 with the degree of engineer of mines at graduation he entered the ser vice of the lehigh valley coal company and after one year was transferred to the engineering de partment of the lehigh valley railroad company while engaged in engineering work with this com pany he was in charge as resident engineer of the musconetcong tunnel on the new jersey exten sion of that road his success in bringing headings and grades with in half an inch of alignment and grade together with a paper on the musconetcong tunnel read before the american institute of mining engineers in february 1875 gave him wide â– recognition among en gineers 11l connection with this work he south bethlehem drafting office of the u s navy yard at washington d c a s clay c e is field engi neer for the state highway com mission of pennsylvania with headquarters at harvey's lake pa a w gaumer c e leaves for kansas this week and will be lo cated at arkansas city on the en gineer corps of the eastern divi sion of the atchison topeka and santa fe railway r a harrower c e is assist ant engineer on water works con struction with the american pipe company 112 n broad street philadelphia w h henderson c e is as sistant field engineer with the crozier land association elkhorn w va w c kline c e is
