on thursday october 12th the twenty-sixth anniversary of the death of asa packer founder of the university was celebrated the exercises consisted of the regular founder's day services,the installa tion of henry s drinker president of the university and turning of sod for drown hall a large delegation of alumni representatives of a number of american colleges and many friends of the late dr drown and president drinker were present promptly at 11 o'clock the ser vices began in the chapel the de votional exercises were conducted by the rev s u mitman acting chaplain assisted by the rt rev ethelbert talbot one of the uni versity trustees president sayre of the board of trustees made the installation ad dress gentlemen of the faculty alumni and students : i am authorized by the board of trustees of lehigh university to present to you the recently elected president of this institution to take the place of our much-beloved and sorely lamented dr drown a generation has elapsed since the president-elect passed from these doors among the early graduates to a successful and honored career and i know whereof i speak when i say that but few days have passed in that long period in which the success of his alma mater has not liad a place in his thoughts and when necessary quick action for tier relief i ask from all of you a measure of his energy and zeal in the true interest of lehigh and that you give your confidence and support to henry sturgis drinker presi dent of lehigh university i now hand him the keys of the univer sity reply of president drinker mr president and gentlemen of the board of trustees i accept this trust with a pro found sense of the great duty in volved i know of no responsibility higher than that resting on those who are charged with the care of the training well-being and edu cation of the young men of our land ; and i pledge my best efforts to the work that my honored pre decessors in office and our scholar ly faculty have so ably laid out and so well administered lehigh has recently emerged from a period fraught with anxiety to those who had her interests at heart with a dawn of returning prosperity brought about by the united action of the alumni and the trustees the alumni have come forward and have given over lehigh lost to princeton on wed nesday by the score of 29-6 le high proved to be much stronger than princeton had anticipated and outplayed her opponents at some stages of the game especially in the first part of the second half a steady downpour of rain made the field very slippery and the ball very hard to handle which accounts in part for the many fumbles j lehigh won the toss and chose ito kick off princeton returned the ; ball to the center of the field and on i five plays advanced it to lebigh's 15-yard line here lehigh re ceived the ball on a fumble and made a first down princeton held and lehigh was forced to punt herman doing the kicking prince ton fumbled on the next play and lehigh received the ball on her 35 yard line lehigh again made first downs through the line and on dou ble passes lehigh was forced to kick dillon caught the ball and ran sixty yards through the whole right side of the line for a touch down cooney kicked the goal seven minutes were required to score the first touchdown herman received the ball on the kick-off and made a good gain with the aid of pyne pyne and brum baugh made three gains of 7 to 9 yards each and brought the ball to the center of the field where a fumble lost it to cooney by steady gains on short plunges princeton was enabled to score a second touchdown bard carried the ball cooney kicked the goal lehigh received the ball on the kick-off johnston made a good gain pyne brumbaugh and gott made gains of from 5 to 7 yards lehigh was held and forced to kick the first half ended with herman's punt to princeton score 12 — o no substitutions were made in lehigh's line-up for the second half lehigh received the kick-off and herman and pyne made a gain of twenty yards lehigh fumbled on the first play in this half and princeton got the ball princeton was playing hard and fast and made good gains by hur dles and line plays at the 3-yard line princeton ' fumbed pyne picked up the ball on the run and made a pretty run of the whole length of the field pyne made a hundred yards in 9 seconds flat or less with bard three yards behind bard could not gain and lehigh scored herman kicked the goal score 12 — 6 princeton kicked to herman lehigh was penalized ten yards on a forward pass lehigh made two first downs and was then forced to kick lehigh took the ball on downs here pyne was hurt and spiers went in as quarter-back le high made first down but was forced to kick lehigh held for continued on fourth page whelming evidence of their active continued and strong interest in and love for their alma mater our university has a record for producing earnest men and with a united body of trustees faculty and alumni working together vigorously for her advancement we well may look forward to a period of greatly increased usefulness in which through constant striving lehigh truly shall make conquest of that high destiny which our founder planned for her and which he confidently foresaw alumni greeting by frank p howe 78 mr president gentlemen of the board of trustees and of the faculty fellow alumni under graduates and ladies and gentle men our friends it is with the ut most diffidence that i absorbed in manufacture have undertaken on behalf of the alumni one of whom it is my honor to be to say some words expressive of our gratifica tion at the honor done to one of our number henry s drinker by his election to the presidency of this university of our hope and confi dence in his success and of felicita tion to all who love lehigh over his acceptance of this call honor able but carrying with it almost overwhelming responsibility my fellow alumni knowing that lehigh men are trained to act rather than speak will pardon my shortcomings let me crave the same indulgence of you all permit me to begin my remarks with a story rudyard kipling has told of a ship not of the largest constructed for a successful firm by skilled shipbuilders who put forth their best efforts her design was carefully worked out every beam girder and plate that entered into her construction was selected and each part firmly riveted or bolted to its place as she started on her maiden voyage she seemed perfect but when the storms came and the gales began to blow and the waves to dash against her first one part and then another began to find that it must not hold too rigidly to the exact spot where it had been put that this rivet and that must give a shade so that all would draw to gether and this part and that part yield a trifle that one might support the other and so when harbor was reached each and every part had come to do its work in perfect ac cord with its neighbor or as rudyard kipling happily with those who make up the university life at lehigh the annual reception of the y m c a will be held saturday evening october 14th in the gym nasium this reception is given to the whole student body the faculty and friends of the university the committee in charge has put forth every effort to make this a large college affair last year about four hundred were present the great majority being college men the freshmen are especially in vited to be present because it gives them an opportunity to get ac quainted in a social way refreshments have been provided for a large number and the com mittee will see that all are well served this is a time when every man in the university can help arouse a greater spirit of interest in college affairs and can do a great deal to ward making a thoroughly united student body the grand parade while the reception was taking place in the university library on thursday evening 1 about 300 stu dents gathered on the campus and formed the side of a canope which led from the library to the gym nasium the boys all carried lights of some description torches japan ese lanterns candles red light and the like immediately after the body of the alumni the faculty and the guests had withdrawn from the library the body marched across the campus and up to the gym in front of the gymnasium several yells were given in honor of president drinker the column then proceeded to leave the campus and crossed the new street bridge which for a few minutes did not gain anything headed by the local tin bucket drum corps the body marched to broad street thence to main to the fern sem here several yells were also given the column then moved across the bridge and dis banded at the wyandotte no 7
