lacrosse the work in the gymnasium for the freshmen will be supplemented during november by outdoor work on wednesday and saturday af ternoons the exercise will con sist of a military drill to be fol lowed on wednesday afternoons by a hare and hound chase at intervals of five minutes a bug 1 c call will be sounded and at each call the various companies into which the class is divided will as semble on different sides of the gymnasium each saturday or wednesday exercise may be substi tuted for two regular roster periods and in this way credited for decem ber attendance may be obtained after the november credits are fully satisfied this extra work will give an opportunity to make up work scrub game on wednesday on wednesday about thirty men reported in foot ball togs to dr newton the preliminary work con sisted of drop and place kicking by some men of the squad while others perfected the various forma tions which have been rather weak in games andy farabaugh and jimmy holderness were on hand and looked after the interests of the scrub team the varsity kicked-off to the scrubs at about 4 o'clock crowther made a touchback the scrubs brought the ball out and punted by steady rushes the first team took the ball to the scrubs five-yard line here the varsity fumbled the second team quickly lost the tiall on a fake kick the varsity then took the ball over the line ol cott making the touchdown after this the scrub team made several touchdowns starting from the varsity's 15-yard line bachman pyne and herman did good work for the regulars while van reenen laubenstein smartt and duncan tore up the holes for the scrubs ' the practice was very spirited ; in fact it was probably the best practice of the year the varsity seemed stronger on the offensive than on the defensive gallaudet should prove an easy game for our boys with the la fayette game several weeks off the team will be in the pink of condi tion to face the easton team the following was the line-up at he kick-off : varsity scrub herman l e duncan olcott l t amon strauss l g westerbcke dunn young c stauffer young bachman r g van reenen johnston r t smith gott r e brennen pyne q j5 hoppin brumbaugh mercur r h laubenstein stacker trout man l h smartt sheridan f b crowther villa nova cancels practice wednesday and satur day afternoons at 2 p m sharp the sticks ordered last week will be on hand and ready for distribu in order to play a game with the university of pennsylvania on saturday november 18 villa nova cancelled her game arranged with lehigh for that date this leaves our team without a game for tion the latter part of this week a game has been arranged with ursinus for november 18 minstrel show r rehearsal at the psi upsilon house at 2 p m on sunday two weeks before the lafayette game and will not give the desired chance to try out new formations the obvious reason for canceling her game with us on the 18th makes the loss of the game worthy of criticism as far as villa nova is concerned organ postludes miners and geologists meet geology night was observed at the monthly meeting on wednes day evening following the read ing and approval of the minutes of the previous meeting prof stew art and mr kendig 03 were elected to membership a vote of thanks was extended to prof rich ards for the valuable papers that he gave to the members of the society at the last meeting at the closec 1 ose of the business meet ing the program of the evening was carried out roberts 06 read a paper on the mother lode of california this lode is situated in central califor nia and the mining operations there are being watched by mining en gineers throughout the country be cause of the deep mining that is being carried on some mines have already reached a depth of 9200 feet and good ore is being pro duced myers 07 followed with a pa per on the susquehanna coal co no 5 slope disaster at nanticoke pa on december 13 1885 twen ty-six men lost their ives in this slope as the result of a cave in the company was accused of not pro perly protecting their men in the mines under their control but sub sequent investigations by expert mining engineers and geo l ogists showed that the cave-in was not the fault of the company but was a result of the geological formation in that region prof echfeldt sup plemented mr myers paper by giving a brief account of the un successful attempt made by the company to recover the bodies of the entombed men the past and present standing of the geologist was the subject of prof irving's talk prof irving to.d of the suspicious way in which geologists were treated in the early mining days especially in the re gion about leadville col and the way they are now received by all who are interested in mining at first the geologist's information was looked upon as being worth less but as time passed the miner began to realize that the geologist could be of great service to him and hence a closer relationship devel oped between the two prof irv ing showed a number of charts and gave illustrations of where the knowledge of the geologist had proved va l uable to the miner h r lee 06 exhibited a spe cimen of stratified clay that is being utilized in making bricks by a man ufacturing concern in massachu setts a luncheon was served by chef myers the first international inter collegiate association foot ball game will be played in philadelphia on december 2 between a team of pennsylvania undergraduates and the champion toronto university team monday — romanic tours wednesday — festival fantasia tschirch thursday—pastorale salome friday — war march of the priests mendelssohn just our style if you ask for an eleven to beat poor lafayette we will show this aggregation and on them it's safe to bet there is lawyer stacker johnson olcott bachman strauss and pyne sheridan gott dunn and hen nan — they are stars that shine if you ask us why we pick them to win the game to-day we will tell you that the reason is that foot ball they can p'.ay ;
