lehigh and mankind he died on monday december 21 at the home of his parents mr and mrs alexander mease at seid ersville professor mease wag gradu ated from lehigh in 1905 and distinguished himself as an en gineer with the bethlehem steel company where he remained con on page 4 col 5 at the eighty-second meeting of the american association for the advancement of science held during the christmas holi days in kansas city doctor charles russ richards repre sented lehigh university dr richards presided over the en gineering section of the five-day conference and was later elected to serve a second term as vice president of the association and chairman of the engineering section this association which is the clearing house for scientific work particularly of pure sci ence has a membership income from this fund will be used to maintain a pro gram of research into problems of an engineering character the h m byllesby company will be privileged to suggest timely sub jects for investigation so that it is quite likely that much of the research will be along lines of particular interest and value to public utility corporations a man capable of conducting the research will be encounter wyoming five at kingston j halsey gulick coach of swimming at lehigh has had varied experience in coach ing that sport he is perhaps the youngest successful swim ming coach in the country for he has devoted most of his life to teaching the tank game he developed a very creditable team last year having several of his men place well in the in tercollegiates gulick comes from a family that might be termed a physi cal education family and his father has won considerable fame in that line through being the first physical culture direc tor in the y m c a in the united states furthermore he was the founder of the camp fire girls and one of the pioneers in the playground development in new york city gulick first started his career in swimming at princeton university where he made the freshman team and won his letter for two years on the varsity his event was diving and he specialized in that particular field of swimming before he was out of college he first started to teach swimming as an instructor in a boys sum mer camp lehigh is his first venture in coaching a college team in addition to coaching swim ming here he spends his sum mers in the same field each year for the past seven years he has conducted a ten day confer ence of swimming directors of summer camps from all over the country tomorrow night fast battle promised in court well illustrated frosh strong the basketball team trained intensively this week in prepar ation for the army game which will be played tomorrow at west point the cadets in their debut this season defeated the st john's college quintet from brooklyn by the score of 30 to 18 capt roosma was the individual star in this game and scored 12 points in the next game with yale the former passiac star was held in check and was un able to score a single field goal but tossed in three of his foul throws draper a forward and shepard a guard were the stars for the army in this game and the former led in the scoring with nine points to his credit ernest blood the former pas saic high school mentor is now coaching the military quintet and after their successful start they are far from lacking in confidence since coach was drawn from the hat before a crowd of about fifty boys who were attending a christmas party at the s p e house dot mellinger was so grieved at the loss of his fliv ver that he has secured another ford which he calls his red steed to console him for his re cent loss outlook bright heavyweight class still weak — other positions filled try-outs being held for rifle team competition keen the lehigh chapter of the a s c e held its second meeting this term on thursday evening december 17 1925 this being the last meeting of the year ev ery effort was made to assure its being the best and the com mittee was more than successful in this effort the meeting was especially well attended both by the students and the faculty and everyone enjoyed it immensely the meeting was called to or der at 8:00 p m by president sheppard professor r j fogg head of the civil engineering department then introduced the speaker of the evening mr f donaldson a graduate of lehigh in the class of 01 mr don aldson studied mechanical en gineering while here and is now engaged in subway construc tion on which he is considered an authority con on page 3 col 1 the topic of mr donaldson's talk was subways in general and the new york subway in par ticular he explained the ever the electrical engineering society of lehigh held a joint holiday meet and smoker on thursday evening december 17 and carried out its pre-christ program in an unusually suc cessful manner the meeting started off with a snap about eight o'clock and after the min utes were read the president f g kear jr introduced the student speaker o m corson 26 corson took as his subject automatic train control and not only did he deliver his ad dress in a very creditable man ner but he illustrated the talk with slides which added to its interest he explained that eavh train is equipped with skis ; and if the operator fails to give the proper signals these skis act on automatic relays which stop the train if the train is going too fast these automatic relays will cause the speed of the train to be cut down corson has had quite a bit of practical exper ience in the line of automatic train controls and consequently he was able to present his sub ject in a very clear manner the president then presented the main speaker of the meet mr h e liversidge who is vice-president of the philadel phia electric company mr liversidge spoke reporting for wrestling practice each day approximately one hundred men have been pre senting themselves daily to coach sheridan for tutoring in the grappling game this afternoon tryouts were held for the syracuse meet which will be held next satur day all men must be within five pounds of their respective weights although the heft y weights have not as yet made a good showing all other classes have been doing very v<?ll therefore it is expected that this first meet which will be held at syracuse will prove an easy one for the sturdy brown and white grapplers fay bartlett freshman bas ketball coach has primed his proteges for their initial tilt with wyoming seminary on the seminary boys home court to morrow night the frosh squad will leave bethlehem tomorrow afternoon accompanied by coach bartlett and freshman manager bartoo and will play at kingston at 8 15 this is the first game for both teams and it will give the rival coaches an opportunity to gauge their talent in combat the wy oming game is always a fixture on the freshman card and is in variably a lively contest that is eagerly anticipated last year the yearlings fell victim to wy oming by a two point margin but the frosh quintet garnered the honors the preceeding year never has the game been one sided but always a nip and tuck affair that is undecided until the final whistle freshmen that have perform ed
