adopted a petition for athletic fee a very important college meet ing was held on friday december 15 immediately after the college lecture by the unanimous consent of those present it was decided to petition for a compulsory athletic fee of five dollars the arcadia took the initiative in bringing the matter before the college and their 1 eoomhiendation follow s : that every student at registra tion be required to pay an athletic fee of five dollars 5.00 said fee to entitle each student to member ship in the lehigh university ath letic association and to a ticket granting admission to all athletic contests held under the auspices of the athletic association said ticket ailso to admit any number of ladies when accompanied by holder the recommendation was adopted by a 95 per cent vote of those present and a petition for the granting of such a fee has been sent to the board of trustees troutman 08 was elected as sistant manager of the 1906 foot ball team and krause 08 assistant manager of the gym teanii arts and science club lehigh loses to perm lehigh's basket ball season was opened saturday night with a de feat at the hands of pennsylvania by the score of 25-17 the game was an exceptionally fast one throughout the score standing 12 11 in lehigh's favor at the end of the first half but perm's better con dition told in the second half and she gradually crept ahead con sidering the fact that capt travis troutman and pierce have only been ab 1 c to practice since the foot ball season closed the team played an exceptionally good game and shows promise of developing into a fast aggregation line-up : pennsylvania lehigh flint capt forward troutman canning keinath forward mauer fitzpatrick center pierce ehlers guard anderson kupaber guard travis capt field goals flint 6 fitzpatrick 2 troutman travis 2 keinath maurer 1 goals from fouls pierce 7 keinath 1 fouls ehlers 6 ku paber travis anderson pierce maurer 3 troutman pierce kein ath 1 referee wi:liam scheffer time of halves 20 minutes college will reopen on january 4 1906 at 8.15 a m e e society the meeting of the arts and science club held last thursday in saucon hall will no doubt oe a long-remjembered event in the history of this new organization the subject of the evening was history which was treated in wo papers followed by a general discussion which was characterized by much spirit and interest in the business portion of the meeting held first regular matters were disposed of stocker 07 ; norton 08 ; heverling 09 ; and mitman 09 were elected to mem bership a committee consisting of kinsey 07 ; walters 07 and kotz 07 was appointed for the purpose of determining upon what status technical students of the university may be elected to mem bership the second part of the program was the reading of papers upon the question as to whether history is a science or an art i j freed man 07 presented the scientific view while r w walters 07 supported the theory that history must be literature the first speak er's argument was that history is i science no less and no more and that it is no more incumbent upon the historian to make a pleasing story of his history than it is for the astronomer to make a fine tale of his account of the stars the latter speaker contended that history while it must be scientific in its ac curacy must be something more ; that it is the duty of the historian to present his facts in an attrac tive style continued on page three storage battery night the third regular meeting of the s e society was held thursday evening december 14 in the physical laboratory lecture room after the routine business had been disposed of it was decided to peti tion the american institute of electrical engineers of which this society is a student branch to grant some sort of pin or badge to the student members electrical engineering societies of other col leges have joined in this petition the first paper was delivered by d a maurer 06 on the subject the chemistry of the storage battery he presented several sketches showing the condition of a cell after charging and after dis charging together with curves showing their performance an interesting paper was read by t n lacy 06 on battery booster stations showing the working of boosters in relieving the generators at heavy loads tak ing the easton power plant equipped with the gould system as an example with interesting pho tographs and sketches w r ehlers 06 gave a paper on the almost unknown edison storage cell he said this cell is not on the market to a great extent is mr edison wishes to make ma terial improvements before offer ing it to the public it is used al most exclusively by the edison company in and about their manu facturing plant continued on page three foi gras the performance reached a most successful conclusion a word should be said about the col lege orchestra which under the leadership of hendricks rendered very creditable music throughout and before the show manager watson his staff and the members of the minstrel association are worthy of high piaise for their work and success in this perform ance the proceeds of which will go to the base ball team the fol lowing 1 is the program : part 1 who's there .. runt smith you must think i'm santa claus buzzer dean '•[ wants a man made to order for me p l brooke i live in lazzy land schmidty smith close your eyes . p f angle fare thee well : beck bechtel automobile frank wrightson ' by by miss eva ; e t gott 06 ; e p pyne 06 g m smart 06 t todd 06 m c b evans 06 j cottrell 05 that the 1905 performance of the minstrel association of lehigh maintained the high standard that lias been set in the past for this an imal event was the verdict of the large audience composed of towns people and students who saw the show at the grand opera house on wednesday night part one was of course the feature of the per formance and captured the house tight from the start every solo number received an encore and that deservedly the chorus sing ing was unusually fine and the jokes by the six end men were really funny various unique stunts such as entrances on toy automobiles etc helped to enliven and round out a first part that was enjoyable from start to finish the alma mater 1 was as usual the curtain raiser the first num ber of the program to follow the in troductory cross-fire of jokes be tween interlocutor george street and tiambos buzzer dean runt smith schmidty smith bones frank wrightson billy stair and becky bechtel was a solo who's there by m l h smith you must think i'm santa claus sung by d k dean fol lowed and was equally successful in winning a large measure of ap plause p l brooke sang well his catchy song i wants a man made to order for me the full chorus joined in the refrain of all numbers except i live in lazy land in which a c smith was assisted by a quartette composed of messrs claw son stair ramsey and wat son the three encores which this rendition called forth were fully merited number five close your eyes proved an excellent oppor tunity for p f angle's rich mel low voice and fare thee well gave f v bechtel a chance to win applause and a bouquet frank wrightson's automobile song made a hit with the audience and bye bye miss e-;a by j n stair formed a fitting close to the excellent musical program sand wiched in between all of these num bers were jokes by the end-men on the interlocutor on each other and on members of the faculty some of the hits on the last named were lather hard but after all mo harm was meant or done after a rather long wait part two of the program was opened by the banjo club which under leader tucker gave two very well rendered selections this was fol lowed by wait ar.d moore in knocks and knocks they surely were brodihead was the german comedian and schnabel the straight man of the humorous skit that came next the doleful ditty by angle and stair proved to be tuneful likewise and when joined by wrightson and patte de vol xiii lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday december 22 1905 basket ball no 25 the brown and white college meeting tenth annual minstrel show very successful performance
