an appreciation of dr ringer the ringer family being swedes and roman catholics migrated some two centuries ago to poland and there acquired estates which . after the partition of that country were large in both austria and russia our old friend honored and dear to very many of vs — le high graduates and students of the last thirty-five years colleagues and townspeople — was born in warsaw may 2 1821 and studied at the university there taking the degree of u j d doctor of civil and canon law in early life he had every advantage of wealth and so cial standing he traveled much was familiar with nearly every cap ital of the continent and acquired such cosmopolitan experience as no one else in these parts has had but his sympathies were witn lib erty and progress a patriotic pole was of necessity a conspirator and he never lacked the courage cf his convictions these in 1847 landed him in a galician jail where be was herded with common crimi nals and had some severe experi ences which taxed heavily his un common strength of body and mind in 1849 the political prison ers were released and their slates being wiped clean he returned to russian poland where one of the family had to reside to secure that portion of their estates for four teen years he led the easy life of a bachelor clubman in warsaw his chief interests were literature so ciety and politics in the large sense during this period he seems to have encountered every family and man ot importance in central europe and perfected that immense knowl edge of its contemporary history which in later days surprise 1 his literal students and american friends but he was destined to experi ence every variety of human for tune and to endure a longer term of adversity and sorrow before leaching the middle state of moder ate welfare which occupied his later cars from pure chivalry and against his cooler judgment he joined the rising of 1863 which was precipitated by the young hot heads — for every pole was still a conspirator at heart he said to me some who thought as i did refused to rise i did not blame them ; but i felt these men are my friends my brothers their princi ples their aspirations are mine can i sit in safety while they risk all for the fatherland ?' " it was the quixotism of a noble nature for two years they stood off the rus sian arms ; and then our friend was one of those who got across the bor der their earthly possessions on their backs death or siberia was the fate of such as were caught one knows what awaits a rebel exile for a year or two dr ringer wandered about europe in continued on fourth page the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday february 9 1906 basket ball e m society y m c a no 32 vol xiii frank c gilbert to speak frank c gilbert will be the speaker at the y m c a meet ing on sunday evening gilbert was general secretary at lehigh in 1903 1 904 and was very popular among the febows at that time he is now engaged in y m c a work in new york city last year when mr gilbert was back about two hundred men turned out lo hear him the meeting on sunday evening will be held at 6.15 o'clock as usual and the men are urged to come out as an excellent talk is as sured there will be a y m c a business meeting at 7.30 p m on tuesday in christmas hall every member and any one interested is invited to be on hand a good program will be rendered college lecture the next college llecture will be given on friday morning febru ary 9th by prof r w wood of johns hopkins university on fish-eye views of baltimore and the photography of invisible phe nomena in connection with this lecture prof wood will show views taken with a new and curious type of photographic apparatus the lens shutter and plate all being immersed in water experiments in photographing under water led to the invention of a camera having an angle of 180 degrees with which prof wood has taken remarkable views these photographs of the outside world as it appears to a fish under water are among the most interesting pictures ever shown other subjects dealt with will be the photography of waves of sound in air travelling with the velocity of a rifle bullet the reflection of the waves from flat and curved sur faces of various shapes and the connection between the phenomena and analogous optical problems photographs of rifle bullets in flight with their accompanying air waves and the progressive stages of the passage of a bullet through a piece of plate glass will be given ; also pictures of water jets the splashing of fluids etc as prof wood is one of the most prominent experimental phy sicists of the country this lecture based on his personal investiga tions and illustrated by a remark able series of photographic views will be not only instructive but one of the most interesting ever given here george a hart m e 88 for merly assistant superintendent of the latrobe steel and coupler co has been appointed superintendent and w l jacoby m e 92 for merly superintendent has been made general manager of the company the plant is situated at melrose park 111 john fuller m e 00 was in town for a short time wednesday president drinker interesting meeting at home of the business side of mining engineering was the subject of the wednesday night meeting of the mining society held at the home of president and mjrs drinker during the transaction of the routine business president grady announced that on the next meet ing night march 7th a joint meet ing will be held with the mining society of lafayette at lehig-h . and a return meeting at lafayette on may 2nd the first paper of the evening on the investment in a greene econo mizer was read by j b carlock the economizer consists of a stack of tubes which is placed in the chimney to utilize the otherwise wiasted hot gases to heat the feed water for the boilers data that had been collected and taken from tests made with the economize was given and commented upon in some cases under favorable condi tions the economizer reduces the cost of steam power while in other cases it is an added expense president drinker opened his ad dress on the practical experience of a mining student and young engineer by giving the opinions of different educators on the amount and nature of practical experience to be given in connection with the causes as laid down he advised those present to get practical expe rience to get in touch with the la borer and to study and learn to know him he then contrasted the past and present courses and teaching of mining at lehigh and told of his engineering experience on the c r r of n j lines east of easton some of the surveying on this work was done at night by use of plummet lamps instead of sight rods in the conclusion of his ad dress he advised his hearers to take the job that gives experience and then decide in favor of the work for which you are fitted and the work you wish to follow prof stewart followed president drinker on the subject of the busi ness education of an engineer prof stewart gave a brief discus sion of the changes in education in the last twenty-five years and the development of the business side during this time in making the comparison of the practically trained with the academically trained engineer prof stewart forcibly impressed his hearers with the fact that business was run for profit trained engineers do not always have business knowledge and know nothing of the machinery of business and hence are handi capped at the beginning of their career at the close of the program re freshments were served lehigh defeats state and loses to manhattan lehigh 31 — state 19 the pennsylvania state college | basket ball team met its first de feat of the season on friday even ing february 2 this was state's first game in her eastern trip and she was confident of defeating le high but lost by the decisive score of 31-19 lehigh rjut up an excel lent game with clever passing ac curate shooting and fine team work the game was very rough due possibly to the strong foot-ball ele ment in the style of game played by the state college team state scored in the first minute of play on a neat shot by ross on the toss troutman got the ball and passed to anderson who tied the score pierce made the next tally on a foul here lehigh broke away and scored six points in quick suc cession but state after several minutes of play succeeded in mak ing the score 10 in lehigh s favor lehigh's superior work was clearly shown in this half which ended with the score standing 24 — 12 the second half was rough but interesting state tried to use her superior weight but lehigh's light i men easily held their own in a ' desperate effort to win out state was not able to score more points in the second half than lehigh the game ending with the score 31 — 19 i in lehigh's favor in the 1 ast basket ball game with state in 1901 lehigh lost by the score of 58 — 8 at state college line-up : lehigh positions state troutman forward moorhead anderson forward ross pierce center yeckley mcmullen guard heaton capt travis capt guard kilmer goals from field anderson 4 i'ravis 4 mcmullen 3 troutman i 2 ; ross 3 ; moorhead 2 ; yeckley kilmer goals from fouls pierce 5 ; moorhead 5 referee dough erty lehigh timers golden state ; h ix smith lehigh rime of halves 20 minutes lehigh 34 — manhattan 43 on saturday february 3rd the basket bal'l team was defeated by manhattan college in new york by the score of 34 to 43 the game was rather rough at times and manhattan was frequently penal ized the manhattan five started the game with a rush and for the first part of the half had things i their own way but by a stiff brace near the end of the half lehigh kept the ball at their end of the floor in the second ' half matters were reversed and lehigh started in to score goal after goal pierce being the star of the half but the brace came too late and the half ended before captain travis's men could overcome the lead gained by man continued on third page
