after the business meeting a smoker and talk-fest was held as usual railroad night a very interesting meeting of the c e society was heild on wednes day evening the subject being rlailroad night after the rou tine business had been transacted the regular program was carried out the first paper was by r w gay c e on the subject curve calculation by co-ordinates dur ing the past summer mr gay was engaged mi work on the lehigh valley railroad in straightening their line near towanda pa sev eral curves had to be calculated some with special restrictions the methods of doing this by co-ordi nates and the advantage over geo mletrical methods was clearly shown by the speaker f u kennedy gave an interest ing talk about stone balasting on the l v r r after leaving the c e summer school last year mr kennedy secured a responsible po sition on the above work stone and gravel ballast were used throughout the work the difficul ties encountered on account of the green hands were portrayed by the speaker in a most instructive and entertaining manner the calculation of quantities in pre'iminary estimates was the subject of a paper by p o mc queen mr mcqueen has had considerable experience in this work and he showed the numerous short cuts and easy methods used in obtaining these results tbe last paper of the evening was on the subject the south pennsylvania railroad by r m merriman this railroad was to extend from pittsburg to harris burg and thence over the p & r and c r r of n j to new york the road as planned would be con siderably shorter than any existing roads between these points but after about 4,000,000 had been spent was bought up by the penn sylvania r r and the project abandoned light refreshments were served after the meeting and posters were drawn by farley,'o6 and mcqueen and diavis 07 the next meeting will be on march 14th the subject being bridge night the 1905 1 906 register will soon be ready for distribution • lehigh 21 swarthmore 36 lehigh lost to swarthmore in a fast and rough game of basket ball played at swarthmore on wednes day afternoon the game was close and exciting but swarthmore wton out in the last five minutes of play the final score was 35-21 swarthmore started off with a rush and scored several goals be fore lehigh was able to tally to ward the end of the half lehigh traced and the first half ended with the score 13-8 in favor of swarth more the second half was the best ex hibition of scientific basket ball ever seem at swarthmore by clever work lehigh scored first in this half and within five minutes of the end of the game had tied her op ponents with the score 19-19 here krueger who had not shot a goal during the game broke loose and shot three baskets in close succes sion lehigh added one score and the game ended with the score 33 21 in favor of swarthmore travis and anderson played the best game for lehigh mcmullen played only a few minutes at the end of the second half line-up : lehigh swarthmore anderson forward heed troutman forward swain vernon kramer center kreusjer davies mcmullen guard dill travis capt ) guard palmer goals from field anderson 3 ;
