is the second of a series of articles on the present prob lems of intercollegiate football published in the brown and white all the articles are written by local authorities and should there fore be of added interest to our readers freshman dance a signal success b-thorpe and fern sem maids give hop added zest heavy stag line the century has such a storm of talk been heard about football as has been the case this fall and which storm alas still contin ues the game has been sub jected to every kind of criticism and praise what do i mean by subjected to praise just ex actly that the praise has often hurt football more than the criticism as a lover of football who has taken an active part in the game for thirty-five years i am deeply interested in even if slightly deafened by this wordy conflict i am not a bit wor ried about anything that the enemies of football may do but con on page 4 col 5 m and after a few minutes of play captain weinstein made the first point for the brown and white on a free toss a few minutes later schuylkill took the lead after a brilliant shot by albright their lead didn't last very long however for shortly afterwards billmey er scored a pretty shot from un der the basket followed by an other from the same position lehigh was now beginning to hit their stride and from then on they were never in danger the half ended with the score 23-8 in favor of lehigh schuylkill started the second half with new determination to stop further scoring by the brown and white they were partly successful holding le high to one field goal by lister con on page 3 beginning of the lehigh basketball team opened its season saturday af ternoon with a crushing victory over schuylkill college by a 40 12 score the reading colle gians put up a game fight but were outclassed by their faster opponents schylkill's passing game was quite good but their inability to pentrate lehigh's five man defense kept their scor ing down to only three field goals two in the first half and one in the second their re maining six points were the re sult of free throws lehigh started the game with earl schaub at center carl schaub and smith at forward and captain weinstein dict has been generally popu lar the lehigh men to win that honor this year are mercur and nevins nevins won his place as center of the team because of his natural gift of soccer in stinct and play he is a hard worker posses perfect control and knows how to distribute the ball to the wing men to enable them to come through with nu merous goals carpenter says of captain mercur that he is the best center half that he has ever seen in collegiate circles he also has the envious record of having played for four years on varsity teams and in that time never having missed a game because of his speed is excellent they made a very good opening for the season last saturday when they trounced schylkill easily the opening game showed that the attack was centered mostly around captain weinstein al though billmeyer the new man on the veteran team was easily high point man con on page 2 col 5 princeton on the other hand is finding difficulty in finding a successor to last year's team coach eight men held last friday the freshman tea dance was held in drown hall on saturday december 12 the fairest of feminine visitors were there in the person of the girls from bishopthorpe and fern sem brown and white decorations were strung from one end of the hall to the other streamers were thrown in all directions and added to that the gaily colored dresses gave a gala appearance to the dance it seemed as if the class of twenty-nine turned out in force for this social event of the pre-xmas season as the floor was crowded at tt times the stag line took up its first stand near the entrance by the stairs but kept advancing until the last dance found it in the center of the floor with the dan cers surrounding it cutting in was frequent from the start and scarcely gave the fellows a chance to get a telephone num ber copied down things start ed off with a rush at 3 30 p m and kept going strong until 6 the lehigh six played better than ever and refreshments in the form of punch and crackers helped keep every one pepped up until the last strain of music had died away lehigh university calendar problems discussed on thursday december 19 professor neil carothers head of the business department ad dressed the freshman class on the subject of banking he ex plained first of all that the checking and depositing ac counts were secondary features of the banking system of today and that the banks realized their real profits by loaning money to the depositors next the pro fessor explained the federal re serve act of 1910 which was inaugurated during president wilson's first term showing how it functions to reduce the rate of failures the mere fact that a bank has a large capital does not render it secure for it is loans and loans alone which make the banks successful next he ex plained the proper way to man age a checking account stating that the banks lost money on any account which ran under a con on page 3 col 2 tomorrow night will prove to be the first test for the sion on friday afternoon the question is that of exemptions ; should there be any or should there be exempt n in some sub jects as an introduc tion to the discussion prof j b reynolds gave some data which he had secured from some fifty or sixty colleges on the subject the data was obtained by questionnaires containing ten questions principally to other institutions interested in techni cal education the replies showed that the general tenden cy was in favor of compulsory examinations with few favoring exemptions the first question asked if all undergraduates were required to take all exams and 32 answers were in the affirma tive while 18 answered in the negative of the eighteen which did have some exemptions the grades were the principal decid ing factors but a few let it up to the head of the department the deans of the various colleges or the instructors by the reg ulation in vogue at m i t which requires compulsory exams no written exercises in the subjects in which there as his subject two recent papers from the franklin institute the first was a paper by dr grover who attempted to prove maxwell the great physicist wrong in a certain experiment which need not be noted the point under discussion was the explanation of the movement of the copper float in the mercury trough experiment suggested by maxwell although grover's the collegiate world court peace conference held at princeton friday and satur day last week was attended by nearly five hundred delegates from colleges and universities in all parts of the country the object of the conference was to stimulate interest in the world court and to determine the concensus of collegiate opinion in this country on the feasibil ity of adopting the world court as a means toward international peace lehigh was represented by elbert d griffenberg who was chosen for this mission by the alexander hamilton club the conference began on friday af ternoon when smokers and mis cellaneous entertainment were provided by the various clubs friday evening marked the official opening 1 of the confer ence when senator lenroot of wisconsin and clarence dar row the prominent criminal lawyer from chicago debated the subject of world c^urt be fore the assemblage saturday morning there were discussion groups of about ten men each held at various clubs each group was headed by one of the noted men who were present by the various clubs friday evening marked the official opening 1 of the confer ence when senator lenroot of wisconsin and clarence dar row the prominent criminal lawyer from chicago debated the subject of world c^urt be fore the assemblage saturday morning there were discussion groups of about ten men each held at various clubs each group was headed by one of the noted men who were present these discussion groups were under the able direction of men such as senator lenroot dr henry van dyke former am bassador to the netherlands and raymond robbins leader of the ! american red cross con
