lehigh 3 — cornell 3 j lehigh defeated columbia on the home field saturday april 14 in a fast arid iriteresting lacrosse game by the score of six goals to one in spite of the fact that most of the fellows were out of town for the holidays a good-sized crowd was present,which cheered the play from start to finish columbia played a much stronger game than last year and the good work of her defence prevented a much larger score as lehigh's center men had no difficulty in bringing the ball in close to the goal from the start the ball was fhostly itii columbia's terri tory their attack having only five shots at goal one of which resulted in a score in the second half lehigh on the other hand had hurriefous opportunities but their shooting seemed to lack force and many were easily stopped by columbia's goal it was only after thirteen minutes of play on a long pass by m'errimah and a quick shoot by prechtl , that the first score was made this was quickly followed by another by prechtl after about fif teen seconds of play prechtl and r porter each added another to the score before the end of the half in the beginning of the second half columbia's attack showed more aggressiveness and their only score of the game was secured at this time after lehigh had added two more to their score through prechtl and r porter numerous substitutions were made the work of the team as a whole showed signs of steady improvement the work of r porter and prechtl was especially worthy of comment the line-up lehigh columbia carldck capt gjbble c si la-e johnston point 01pp time of halves 25 minutes the lehigh-corriell lacrosse game on friday afternoon on le high field resulted in a tie the score being 3-3 during the first half of the game cornell played well and through the listless indifference of lehigh's men scored three points cornell started off with a rush keeping the ball for long periods dangerously near lehigh's goal finally in a fierce scrimmage before the net darling managed to get the ball the pittsburg alumni dinner new dormitories carnegie gives 100,000 for a most successful and enthusias tic gathering of the alumni took place at pittsburg on saturday evening april 21st it was the annual meeting and dinner of the pitsburg lehigh club there were present some 120 alumni from pittsburg and its vicinity and on behalf of the faculty president drinker professors merriman thofriburg franklin eckfeldt stewart meakef and lambert similar gatherings of the alumni liave'been going on at all our prin cipal alumni centers during the present year and college loyalty and spirit have been universally manifested in coricluthhgf his re sponse to the , toast of lehigh at the pittsburg dinner dr drinker called on mr charles l taylor of 76 who stated that he was au thorized by mr andrew carnegie to anfiotiflce the gift to lehigh by mr carnegie of 100,000 to be ap plied to the erection of dormitories for the university mr taylor has been identified with pittsburg in terests for almost all his profes sional life and he has been asso ciated with the ' carnegie interests for many years he is now chair man of the carnegie pension fund and of the carnegie hero rnirid he accepted an election to the board of trustees of the ltniver sity last autumn he has ever been an active member of the alumni and has held the offices of secre tary and president of that asso ciation this great gift of mr carnegie signalizes a new departure for le high it is the first large gift that has come to us from sources out side of the alumni of the institution and the men originally identified with the founding of the college it is an efiorrhous encouragement to all the friends of lehigh arid presages the advent of a new era of prosperity arid betterment we shall have a college in fact as well as in name when we see oh south mountain a college settlement of students comfortably housed and our campus surrounded by the dwellings of our teaching staff bringing our whole college body into that close social contact which should be the life of our university and the present developments show that this dream of the past is rapid ly beeorriiiig a reality the pittsburg chlbj at its meet ing on saturday night took simi lar actioil to that taken some time since by tlie new york and phila delphia clubs and recently by the chicago ciiib iii the appointment of a committee of ten to promote the interests of the university the following resolution offered by tennis club there will be an important meeting of the tennis club wed nesday opril 24th at 2.30 p m before the lacrosse game at saucon hall ground rules for the season will be adopted as only one court is being put in order and it will be necessary to make rules govern ing the length of time tlie court shall be occupied by the same play ers a proposition frorii a sporting goods manufacturer has been re ceived by which rackets arid balls can be procured at reduced rates all prospective buyers are re quested to hand their harries to greenough on or before wednes day lehigh defeated by dickinson team returns from south crn trip lehigh s base ball team was de belong to a nat ural order which is exceedingly old and on which we are dependent the second lesson is that we be long to a moral order in which we feel that our ideals are to be re spected nature however is pro foundly indifferent to human ideals she reveals no benevolent design nor does slle show any malevolence there are those who show an easy going optimism who believe that riothitig 1 can esist that is not right walt whitman says i find rio imperfection in nature neverthe less he who would live a noble life can not follow nature he must seek some larger sphere for na ture's first law the survival of the fittest is 1 cruel beyond measure and is not necessarily just the conflict of morality and na ture is not absolute morality is a native efflorescence of a cosmic process the same nature which has evolved man has produced the tiger and other destructive animals the brute nature and the moral tendency in man ever struggle for supremacy and it is not always cer tain which will predominate science has ho adequate solution for ethics it can only throw light on the subject by showing causes and interrelations ideals are in their very nature such that their values are intrinsic morality is its own excuse the great lesson to be gotten from the struggle of " morality against nature is that the objective factor of experience in life consists in adjusting oneself to nature there
