four day frolic rutgers west virginia w & j and pitt are latest victims carnegie tech ties lehigh heavy hitting and excellent pitching smother visitors under 12-0 score coach o'neil's proteges hope for victory in tomorrow's tilt at hoboken trinity blew up final count 5-3 north carolina lads fail to display usual form on taylor field tavener wilson and hocker account for lehigh's tallies kutzleb plays well the brown and white band will give an open-air concert on the campus on sunday may 7th at 4 p m under the auspices of the y m c a j mark frey has ar ranged for one or two speakers to give short talks during course of the program this is the first con cert of its kind to be given by the band and it is hoped that the stu dent body will give it the support it needs joe recapito 24 and his men have been working hard since vacation preparing the program and the band will be prepared to present many pleasing selections rcxt sunday afternoon the lehigh musicians furnished the music for the rotarian banquet in the kurtz restaurant last wed nesday evening and made a splen did snowing for two hours the business men enjoyed the pleasing result of the year's work which joe and the rest of the band have put in making this year's or ganization the best in the history of the university the band will probably play in other engagements in the near future and the indica tions are that they will be very busy for the rest of the year it is hoped to raise enough mon p y by the end of this year to supply the band with a different type of uni form next fall if present plans materialize the band will play a three-day run in one of the theatres of allentown and this may be followed by an other concert in bethlehem pitt racquet wielders to perform tomorrow junior week has come and gone but its memories linger on with those who spent those four mem orable days at lehigh tasting the delights of a carefree life filled with social pleasures each dance seemed better than the preceding and each tea had a novelty that made it stand out from all the rest the fair guests began to arrive on monday morning and each train from no matter what direction brought a fresh influx of these wel come visitors who seemed to change the very atmosphere of the campus from a serious thoughtful mien to a carefree existence the festivi ties commenced on monday evening with the inter fraternity dance which lasted until well after three due largely to the excellent music which was impossible to resist the sam brown orchestra from the ritz carlton hotel philadelphia were the guilty parties on this oc casion on tuesday afternoon there were two rival attractions in the sigma phi and phi delta theta teas each function had its staunch upholders who vouch safed that each was the best ever though there were many guests who attended both and proclaimed them equally attractive the evening brought with it the cotillion which under louis cohen's musical touch was a masterpiece after tripping the light fantastic until after three the guests adjourned to the delta tau delta house to reassemble at a breakfast dance this annual af fair of the delta taus has gained great popularity and junior week would now be incomplete with out it continued on page three in the afternoon the chi psis and sigma nus vied with each oth er for the honor at teas held in their respective houses both teas were great successes as each house over on saturday april 29th the le high tennis team finished one of the most successful trips that a lehigh tennis team has enjoyed since tennis has been a sport at the university within the period of a week five matches were played four of which resulted in victories and one which ended in a tie the season record to date shows a clean slate with five victories one tie match and no de feats this is excellent campaign ing for early-season form and the prospects for a very successful sea son are very bright rutgers proved to be no match for the lehigh racquet-wielders on april 22nd and failed to win a single match three of the matches however went into three sets and the lehigh men were forced to ex ert themselves in order to win the summary : — singles capt beck of lehigh defeated duryee rutgers 6-3 7-5 beale lehigh defeated belnap rutgers 6-2 2-6 6-3 koegler lehigh defeated jones rutgers 3-6 7-5 6-4 wentz lehigh defeated gest of rutgers 6-3 6-3 doubles beck and koegler lehigh de feated belnap and jones rutgers 6-1 6-3 beale and laughton lehigh de feated harrison and duryee rut gers 4-6 6-4 6-4 after decisively defeating rut gers the team began its triumphant southern trip west virginia was the first team tackled and they fell a victim to a 4 to 2 defeat on wed nesday april 26th the only two men to score for the mountaineers were p r cut right and h f om stead who defeated e b beale and w m laughton respectively in continued on page five tickets for spring show on sale now n y u nine next to oppose lehigh stevens the university of penn sylvania and johns hopkins alone stand in the path of the lehigh la crosse team in the struggle for the championship honors of the south ern division of the intercollegiate lacrosse league the game with the midshipmen on april 22nd showed the real strength of coach o neil's aggregation and although the latter drew the short end of the 5 to 3 score the game was a toss-up until the final whistle to-morrow the brown and white stick-wielders journey to hoboken to meet the strong stevens team and the tech men promise to offer stiff opposition losing to the ox ford-cambridge champions by an 8 to 4 score the hoboken collegians held johns hopkins 3 to 2 and last saturday sent yale down to defeat by a creditable margin of tallies this year stevens possesses a strong defense and it was the work of this department that kept the hopkins attack out of the running coach bill o'neil is expecting one of the hardest games of the season to-morrow and has been priming the squad accordingly with the exception of whitney who has a bad cold the varsity team is in good condition warm weather at the beginning of the week was a big aid in getting the men into stride after the lay-off during the spring vacation period dick kutzleb who exhibited such stellar goal work against the navy has been stopping the attack in the shooting drills during the week and it should be an extraordinary shot that gets into the net to-morrow the same varsity team that fought the navy stickmen to a standstill has been scrimmaging together all week and the combination plays of the attack have improved a vic tory to-morrow for the brown and white will be a big stride towards championship laurels and captain red strauch and his team-mates are after the long end of the score the following men will probably eighteen goals each game on the other hand cornell was the only oppo nent to be able to score a single goal against them at that they were defeated by the overwhelming score of 20 to 1 the game opened with a rush with each team realizing that they would have to fight their utmost to win and it is certain that the game that was put up by both teams was the best that has been seen on tay lor field for several years the navy attack showed all kinds of form and speed and forced the brown and white defense to keep constantly on the move to keep the ball away from the net the work of kutzleb at goal was excellent as he kept out countless attempts of the navy forwards enslin bush and strauch also showed their cus tomary good form and on several occasions blocked shots that were labelled for the net for fully fifteen minutes after the play started neither side was able to get near the goal and most of the work was hard scrimmage in mid-field wilson missed an ex cellent chance for a goal just be fore the first score when he was able to slip by his guard and get close to the net but in the excite ment of the play he overshot the mark the speedy defense of the middies recovered the ball and car ried it down to lehigh territory where dole the navy center tal lied the first counter of the game this score made the lehigh squad work even harder and many shots were aimed at the navy goal af ter repeated attempts muzdakis passed to tavener who made a clean shot into the goal navy ob tained the ball after the face-off but it was recovered by lehigh the brown and white squad lost another opportunity to score when bush carried the ball in but the shot was saved by smith a very short time later wilson carried the ball in from mid-field and contrib uted another point toward lehigh's their first match the pitt team is on an eastern trip and has matches scheduled with bucknell lafayette lehigh and swarthmore captain williams is the star of the pitt team but cap tain beck of lehigh had little trou ble in defeating him in straight sets last week m pittsburgh beale of lehigh also had no trouble in de feating the pitt number two man grooms and he should repeat his victory over the pitt man to-day lehigh has had an extremely suc cessful season so far with victories over moravian rutgers west vir ginia washington and jefferson and pitt ; two tie matches with car negie tech and heavy action and are ready for any sort of battle mccarthy has three good pitchers up his sleeve and although it is not known which one he will use whether it be dor kin bacile or dunlevy each will medical society will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock in coppee hall for the purpose of electing officers all men taking the pre medical course are urged to be present and elect officers which will assure another successful year for this society pi delta epsilon , the honorary journalistic fraternity will hold a very important meeting in drown hall next tuesday evening at 9 o'clock besides some important business an initiation will be held the men to be taken in at this time are b a c johnston j w gardy a m michell and f c walters an important burr meeting will be held in drown hall this even ing at 7:15 o'clock it is urged that all members of the board be present members of the senior class who desire to have their names on the memorial tablet of the class of 1922 to be placed in the chapel on class day are urged to pay their class dues at once to any member of the finance committee letters were sent out to all seniors during junior week and in each letter the amount each man owes to the class was indicated the members of the finance committee will canvass all the members of the class as far as pos sible but to assist in the work and at the same time to make sure all names appear on the tablet it is suggested that each senior mail a check for his dues to the chairman of finance committee at the delta tau delta house the members of the committee to whom the mon ey is payable are k m downes chairman c c strauch c ide g w walters m o jefferson n p sanborn s cottrell trinity's impressive record of 15 victories in 18 starts meant little to the brown and white for when they lined up against the north carolina collegians they found pitcher sanderson for eleven hits and twelve runs and incidentally scored the first white-wash of the season the final figures stood at 12 to 0 may day violence again was in vogue and many batting av erages were fattened the game appeared to be a reg ular ball game up until the terrible third inning when sanderson began to be pounded for everything from singles to homers his team-mates aided considerably with numerous errors in giving lehigh 8 runs be fore the brown and white were retired for the inning adams led at bat with three hits for a total of six bases with don ovan and read sharing second hon ors with two hits each read and rogers each came through with four baggers lees again assumed the burden of hurling and held the trinity team scoreless for five innings in which time he struck out four junie light replaced lees in the sixth and as in the syracuse game demonstrated his ability by holding his opponents scoreless besides fan ning five men lehigh's first run came in the second inning rowley was issued a pass and hess a moment later made the same trip by walking timmy donovan singled scor ing rowley hess being tagged out at the plate continued on page six it was the terrible third that de cided the fate of the team from the piedmont plains the brown and white slammed the pill with fervor and were always wide-awake to convert base hits or errors into runs adams started the circus with a three-bagger into deep left field lees was thrown out at first johnson drew a base on balls and stole second adams slid home on larkin's easy grounder to turner f smith the catcher had trouble in holding the ball and while he was juggling it johnson romped home larkin going to second turner muffed rowley's easy out larkin going to third with rowley safe at first larkin and rowley scored on hess's infield hit read seemed to be in a hole with two strikes and three balls called but on the next pitched ball drove the pellet over the right-field wall for a circuit trip hess touched the plate a second before turk rote singled stole second and third and came home when the catcher drop ped donovan's third strike don ovan was safe at first and was ad vanced to second on sanderson's balk adams batted for the sec ond time in the inning and came through with a double donovan was halted at third lees struck
