small number of candidates the first meeting of the minstrel association was held on saturday october 1 in christmas hall sev eral songs were practiced and the chorus responded to them very well if the attendance of this first meet i g is to be taken as a criterion however the assocication will be greatly handicapped by a scarcity of material as only about thirty men were present in last year's performance there were more than forty men consequently unless irore come out the show is liable to lall below the high standard set for it in the past the freshmen es pecially were conspicuous by rea son of their absence there should be plenty of talent in a college of this size plenty of close harmony sharks men who could sing a song crack a joke dance or do other vaudeville stunts all these are urged to come out and try for the minstrels this is a worthy college organization and as such deserves the hearty support of the student body for the benefit of the freshmen it may be well to explain that there are two dramatic organizations in college ; the minstrel and the mus tard and cheese associations the former holds its performances about the second week in december o each year the performance of the latter is held some time in april the proceeds of the minstrel show are used to support the bast ball team on its southern trip during the easter vacation therefore any service rendered the minstrel association will indirectly tend to ward the advancement of our ath letic interests this year the officers of the minstrels are payne 05 manager corsa 05 musical di rector and kirk 05 stage mana ger those who are at present on the roll are white yon borris kline wrightson rich estes watson green bunting moore boeh nnger heise smith browning dean gfpeninger brook baker swope bill wood ramsey gaw throp edgar and stair the next rehearsal will be held en wednesday october 5 at 4 p in in christmas hall it is to be hoped that more men will put in ap pearance at that time kavanaugh m e 04 now lo cated at easton was in town sun day report of the convention the 87th meeting of this society was held at duluth minnesota and included inspection tours to the famous iron ranges of the lake su perior region during the week of september i4th-2ist the eastern members arrived from buffalo on the steamer northwest tuesday evening september 13th many local and western mining men joined the party wednesday morn ing when the opening session was held president galey responded to ad dresses of welcome made by promi nent duluth men and after a few remarks from dr raymond the secretary of the institute the regu lar business of the session was taken up several papers were read and discussed before adjournment at the thursday session the papers resented dealt mainly with blast iurnace problems ; the geological exploration work which has been recently carried on was also brought up both wednesday and thursday afternoons the steamer vidette and several launches were placed at the disposal of the visitors and trips were made about the harbor wed nesday the concrete piers which are being constructed by the gov ernment were looked over these form part of extensive improve ments which have made duluth the finest harbor on the upper lakes the thursday trip gave opportu nity to inspect the plant of the zenith furnace company and in c-uded luncheon at the works friday and saturday an excur sion was made to the great iron ranges of the vermilion and mesabi districts friday evening found the party at hibbing minnesota with a special train and several private cars from duluth railways by way of amusement a show was gotten up which gave opportunity to tal ented members of the party to ;
