at a recent meeting the brown and white board decided to renew the special offer which was made last year although the regular subscription price for the year is 2.00 the paper may be had if paid for before november 1 for 1.50 sub scriptions are payable to any member of the board or at the supply bureau in christmas hall or may be mailed to the brown and white everyone should take advantage of this low rate immediately founder's day services speech of prof johnston the annual founder's day ser vices were held in packer memo rial church on thursday morning in the presence of a large audience prof joseph french johnson dean of the new york university school of commerce and finance was the speaker of the occasion and he delivered an address that was received with the greatest interest professor johnson's subject was civic and economic responsibili ties of the american university he began by briefly discussing the various ideals of university educa tion and reached the conclusion that these various ideals which have caused considerable discussion in the educational world are not in compatible it is the university's duty he said to build character inspire a love of truth train men to think clearly and prepare them for suc cessful work in life there is a too common assumption he said that character is something that can be lectured into men that mo rality is born of the ten command ments and that higher ideals spring from sermons and exhortation practically we know better char acter is a product of strenuous and difficult life it is moral fibre the capacity to endure the power to say t will and i won't promptly and a young man can get it only as he gets bodily strength by working for it by leaping hurdles and by thrusting aside obstacles i regret to say that at the present time our american colleges in this partial 1 ar are not above suspicion the path that leads to college perhaps is diffi cult enough but the four-year jour ney within the gates we have made too much like a loitering stroll through a garden of flowers hard work and clear thinking are the important things i do not believe a man can master kant's critique of pure reason and be a sneak thief his soul forever there after will be barren soil for the seed of crime there may be learned vagabonds and polished villains,but i am sure that we could wipe out all their kind if we could catch them young oxford paper company at rumford falls maine f a mckenzie 95 is attending the graduate school at the univer sity of pennsylvania brayton graff 94 is engaged in establishing chemical laboratories at various cotton mills in the south for the proctor and gamble soap company j clayton snyder 04 is with the scofield compan 904-906 pennsylvania building philadel phia founder's day games continued on second page won by freshmen for the first time in years the freshmen won the annual foi .. ders day sports by taking the football and baseball games both if these events were closely con tested and the interest was intense hroughout the afternoon as the sophomores won the relay races hen the freshmen won in foot ball and the baseball game was fought on about even terms from start to finish the first event of the day wos the relay race and it resulted in a rather easy victory for the sopho mores the first lay was nip ana tuck between the two men but the sophomore w bayles succeed ed in defeating his brother j b bayles by about three yards the next relay hunt for the sopho mores gained about five yards over hatter 08 and waddill 07 increas ed the gain in his relay to about fifteen yards running against col lins 08 smith captain of the 07 team pulled away from francis 08 in the next relay until the distance at the finish was about 25 yards levan the freshman captain ma terially reduced this lead in his lap with walters 07 but the scnh mores won the race by about 25 yards the football game was full of lively interest the men were well trained and the teams w r ere pretr - evenly matched the absence of fumbling was cleanly noticeable and the smoothness with which the plays were gotten off showed that the game was far from an amateur performance the sophomores kicked off and the freshmen returned the ball to their thirty-yard line the fresh men immediately began a series of line bucks and end runs which landed the ball well into the sopho more's territory but when in strik ing distance of the goal they lost the ball on a fumble the ball was carried back to the middle of the field and remained there during the remainder of the first half as neither side threatened their oppon ents goal the second half showed the su periority of the freshmen they kicked off and the sophomores se cured the ball on their 45-yard line the freshmen line held like a stone wall and the ball was turned over to them on downs by successive end runs and good line bucking the freshmen carried the ball to the lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday october 14 1904 alumni notes
