foot ball lehigh o — princeton 60 the journney to princeton last saturday resulted in a waterloo forthe brown and white owingto the large number of accidents which have happened to the varsity the team sent to princeton did not near ly represent lehigh's full strength even so the effect of dr newton's strenuous coaching fdr the past week was clearly demonstrated for in spite of their superior weight it took princeton twienty one min utes to score their first touchdown even in the second half when the the boys were nearly worn out with their hard exertions and several of the best men had been retried on account of injuries they still show ed the old lehigh pluck in face of sure defeat barring one bad five minutes when the team seemed to go to pieces and alowed their op ponents to score four touchdowns the second half was almost as good jan exhibition of foot ball as the first cooney of princeton prooved a marvelous kicker converting even touchdown into a goal capt foulke played a briliant game sco - d : ckinson vs lehigh electrical society successful meeting held the first meeting of the society for this term held in the physical laboratory was called to order by president r h smith wednesday c ening october 19 after the ap pointment of the committees for the ensuing year and the transac tion of business the president out lined in a few apropriate remarks the plan of work to be carried out during the coming months the evening's program was next taken up e l rich 05 reading the first paper on the fourth di mension a subject of peculiar in terest to all interested in the fairy land of mathematical physics this paper was followed by the usual discussion which is an in structive part of every meeting after which the next number on the program was taken up this was a paper by mervine 05 on the heating of magnet coils prof esty then made some timely re marks on the formulae for pre-de termining the heating effect on field coils following this with a general talk on the purposes of the socie ty's meetings and the benefit to be derived by a regular attendance on the same the society was fortunate in having present at the meeting mr maxwell of the easton powfeir plant who gave an informal talk of great interest to all present the meeting then adjourned to the lower floor of the laboratory where refreshmlentsi were served and an hour of pleasureable inter course was enjoyed chess club meeting the first meeting 1 of the chess club will be held next thursday night at 7.30 in the forum room in sau con hall nearly thirty men have joined the club and a success ful year seems certain it has been learned that rutgers is anxious to arrange a dual meet with lehigh and as the expense would not be great it is very likely that some time in the year the twio colleges will come together in friendly con test over the boards it has not vet been learned whether lafayette has a chess club or not but if they havj the club would like to arrange a contest with them to show our men tal as well as our physical superi ority over our rivals down the liver a great many men seem to be hesitating because they rannot pla well enough the object of the cllib is to promote the interests of the grme of chess at lehigh and if a man knows nothing of the game he has an excellent chance to learn now everyone who wishes to join should hand his name to moore 07 before the meeting so as to get on the schedule for the year all members who can do so are urged to bring boards and men to the next meeting so as to get the schedule started at once gymnasium notice regular practice hours for bas ket ball and gymnasium teams will be announced later for the present the basket ball will be al lowed on the floor from 30 to 50 minutes past each hour unless the floor is otherwise occupied
