south bethlehem pa wednesday november 23 1904 calendar no 18 the brown and white vol xii funeral of dr drown held saturday horning in packer flemorial church tuesday nov 22 at 5 p m brown and white board meeting at christmas hall wednesday nov 23 at 12 m thanksgiving recess begins thursday nov 24 at 2 p m foot ball game on march field — lafayette vs lehigh at 12,50 and 1.10 p m special trains leave union station via l a r r for easton monday nov 28 at 8.15 a m thanksgiving recess ends y m c a address of prof green a recipe for beauty was the subject of a thirty-minute talk last sunday by prof h f green dean of the english department of the west chester normal school kffeminate as the subject would seem at first thought to the mind of one not present the opposite im pression prevailed ere the profes sor had finished he briefly compared the outward life of the world to that of the inner life of the individual and showed that the beauty balance was much on the side of nature mostly be cause as a race we are not close ob servers one moment he would have his hearers convulsed with laughter as he raoidly recited an incident the next he would have them calmed down for the consid eration of a serious point his recipe for a beautiful inner life was each day 1 study a beautiful picture 2 hea some beautiful music 3 read some beautiful litera ture these sunday evening talks seem to be growing in attractive ness and the men who fail to take advantage of them do not realize what they are missing it is safe to say that the association has never had as good a roster of speakers a c it has had this fall each meeting brings the remark best yet and this is no reflection upon any pre ceding one gym team prospects the funeral of the late dr drown was held on saturday morning at 10 o'clock in packer memorial chapel at 9.4.0 a m the thousand friends of the late presi dent attended the services which were simple and very impressive the students of the university formed in two parallel row's ex tending across the campus from the president's home to the packer memorial chapel at 9 o'clock the bt 11 in the packer hall clock-tower began tolling and the funeral pro cession wended its way between the rows of bare-headed students to the chapel professor c l thorn burg secretary of the faculty headed the procession and was fol lowed by the trustees of the uni ve.'sity then came the casket heaped with flowers tendered by the students and borne by the fol low'ng members of the teaching force : profs j w richards wil liam esty howard eckfeldt c f ullman-drs j fred wolle c h gauss j d irving c h whi man and w w davis messrs n m emery s m palmer ar-d c w brown the honorary pall bearers the faculty and instruc tors lalumni and undergraduates followed in the order named the large chapel was crowded to the doors 1 he casket was received at the entrance by the choir of the church of the nativity and the efneiating clergymen bishop ethel bert tjalbot rev dr sterling rev dr butler rev s u mit inan assistant to re,v dr sterling rev f im bird former chaplain of lehigh and rev mr tolman dr j frederick wolle chapel or ganist rendered chopin's fimera march as a processional hymn 404 i heard the sound of voices was rendered t edgar shields presiding at the organ rev dr sterling read the collects the anthem blest are all the departed from spohr's last judgment was sung by a quartet the duet by master john riegel soprano and rev s u mitman tenor and chorus benediction by bishop talbot was followed by hymn 175 the saints of god tjheir warfare o'er beethoven's funeral march in a flat minor was played as a recessional the flow ers tendered were both numerous led and white floral wreaths a and beautiful the president's chair was surrounded by a bank f if palms and surmounted by large large bunch of red and white bands of white and satin ribbon adorned the entrance to dr drown's pew after the services in memorial chapel the hearse bearing the re mains was driven through a double row of students formed on new street to i special train which conveyed the body to philadelphia for interment in woodland ceme tery profs e w frazier mans iield merriman and c l thorn burg accompanied the body as the train carried awiay le high's beloved president to his final resting place over eight hundred people bar^d their heads among prominent out-of-town educators relatives and friends present at the funeral were mr anci mrs a f phelps and mr and mrs z phelps of wilkes-barre e b drown of philadelphia dr john meigs principal of the hill school at pottstown dr rossitor w raymond professor of mining i aw at columbia university ; dr dudley chemist for the pennsyl vania railroad at altoona mrs eckley b toxe of drifton prof w l robinson one of the mas ters of the lawrenceville school and mrs robinson lawrenceville n j prof talbot of the massa chusetts institute of technology successor to dr drown at that in stitution prof henry howe head of the department of metallurgy at columbia university new york prof georgew maynard of troy n y vice-president of the insti tute of mining engineers and a life-long friend of the late dr drown mrs prime of drifton mrs severin ringer of new york mrs maxwell and mrs frank michler of easton prof h w harding east sound wash for merly professor of physics at le high university william arthur lathrop 75 president of webster coal and coke company of phila delphia wilkes-barre ; robert grier cooke 84 new york pres ident lehigh university alumni association cage for the past two or three weeks work on the structural part of the cage has been in progress and in a few weeks more if the weather per mits and only zero weather or im passable snow will prevent the frame of the building will be stand ing the exterior measurements of the cage will be 61x121 feet and the interior dimensions 60x120 ft i e the clear space in the interior will be 60x120 feet it will be 19)2 feet from the ground floor to the bottom of the trusses the building will be lighted by 28 double windows 8x12 feet each o;i the sides of the structure as well as 4 half double windows in the gables 8x8 feet these win dows will all be covered on the in side with a wire screen of one eighth inch woven wire there will be no screen on the outside un less necessity demands the covering of the building will be galvanized corrugated sheet steel which will give it a white me tallic appearance there will net be lockers in the cage nor baths but those in the gymnasium will be readily accessible there will be a track in the inte rior about three or four feet wide and twenty laps to the mile on the ground floor there will also be a base ball diamond and lacrosse field on a small scale the cage will also be given over to some extent to foot ball especially in damp and snowy weather this will dispense with signal practices in the gymna sium it is the purpose at present to push the building right along to completion and the next few weeks will see it under cover the postponed meeting of the forum will be held november 30 t|he prospects of this season's gym team are very bright all of last year's team are still in col lege and a large number of new men have urned out in response to capt evans call for candidates trie following men have reported for practice evans capt isert s w brown stauffer a h krause mcdevitt mcqueen l d more l a more j d scott also the following freshmen : fernan dez altemus j s b&yless banks collins donaldson gibble harris j essup and trembley active prac tice has been going on for a week but will be discontinued until after thanksgiving vafc.at(ion owing to the death of dr drown imeets will be held with rutgers haverford and pennsylvania but the dates have not as yet been fixed definitely there is a possibility of sending a team to represent lehigh in the inter-collegiates in case the new material shows up well enough to make a well-rounded team lehigh university
