vice-president w d hartshorne 74 ; secretary and treasurey william warr 95 ad clress of secretary 53 state street boston mass at the last meeting there was a full and enthusiastic meeting of lehigh men residing in new eng land the interest taken is a good omen for he future success of tne club the next regular meeting of the club will be held at young's hotel dec 14 1904 at 7 p m all lehigh men are invited to at tend minstrel show met wednesday evening the regular meeting of the chess club was held last night in the forum room the meeting was called to order by president merri rnan and the business was as short as possible the meeting adjourned at 8 o'clock snd the members either stayed to play with or watch tne playing of mr otto hesse cham pion of the bethlehems who played the club a number of simultaneous games opposing mr hesse were sey fert 04 blume 05 : rch 05 ; hostetter 05 brch 06 jacob ky 06 barnes 06 showalter 06 ; moore 07 ; hatner 07 ; and kinsey 07 all of these men were defeated by mr hesse in their first games buch nearly ianaged to get a draw on a ruy lopez open ing but after some time mr hes;e managed to force him to resign most of the men above mentioned played a second and some a third game with mr hesse of these buch/06 showalter 06 and barnes 06 managed to defeat him mr hesse won a total of fourteen of the seventeen games played the next meeting of the chess club will be held tuesday decem ber 20th at 7.30 p m in the forum room the vacancy caused by the resignation of lauer 06 from the office of treasurer will be filled at that meeting any new members who wish to join the club should come to that meeting as otherwise they will not be able to get on the schedule philadelphia lehigh club frank gilbert to speak in last saturday's issue of the erown and white there was a statement something like this let it be remembered that the y m c a is not here for the few but to serve the college — which means every undergraduate the sunday evening meetings are : among the most attractive of the ; association functions and if there are any aborigines about who are ' still able to say they have never been over to the 6.30 tea party this coming sunday will be a good time for them to break the ice such was the statement and it may be well to repeat it here not only for the sake of reoetition but also in view of the fact that the is sue for which it was intended was not delivered until monday so read it again and take notice of the following : mr frank c gilbert will speak in christmas hall sunday at 6.30 and there will be another excellent soprano solo frank will need no introduction to the old men but for the benefit of the freshmen it may be well to say that mr gil bert was general secretary of our association last year he came to us from yale where he graduated in 1903 and where he was promi nent in social athletic and asso ciation circles possessed of an ex ceptional perslonauity straightfor ward consistent in his christian living — you have the man in a nutshell he has done a lot for lehigh in more ways than one at northfield last summter among those hun dreds of college men instead of staying in the yale dormitory and throwing himself with the yale men as he was asked to he stayed with our h.tle delegation to the last putting a big feather in our caps by pitching ball that beat every one of the sixteen teams with the excep tion of his own college it is need less to tell what he did for the as sociation everyone knows about j it and the least that can de done to show our appreciation is for every one — association member or not — to turn out give him a hearty re ception and make him feel that the time he spent here wias not in vain on thursday evening decem ber bth pa lessor w s franklin gave a lecture before the franklin institute philadelphia the subject was electric waves and the behavior of telephone and power transmission lines the minstrel show will be held on saturday evening december 10 at the grand opera house this will be the ninth annual perform ance of the minstrel association and the show this year gives prom ise of equalling if not exceeding those of former years the mem bers of the association have been rehearsing since the first part of october and the show on saturday will give ample proof of the work they have done the minsitrel association was established nine years ago and its performance has come to b con sidered one of the events of the college year the proceeds of the performance go towards support ing the base ball team on its southern trip in the spring it is said that this year the associa tion will try to make up whatever deficit there may be in the cage fund so that all attending will be furthering college organizations in more ways than one as to the show itself the chorus has been practicing a large number of new songs which cannot fail to be ap preciated the end mien have a fine collection of knocks jokes etc and will do their part to perfection in the second part there will be a large number of original stunts which will prove to be most enter taining to say the least the tickets for the show may be obtained at jacoby's drug store or at kemp nuith's drug store no 22
