speakers new spirit shown by this evening the spirit of beat lafayette which has been constantly rising will find a means of expression at the an nual lehigh-lafayette smoker which as usual will be held in the gym the rooters of the brown and white will need no pep meeting but merely an op portunity to express their feel ings if the present signs are any criterion con on page 6 col 1 as usual itself continuously pressed to wrest a 7-7 tie from lehigh university's drive for lafayette here on saturday con tinued unabated tuesday and wednesday afternoons when a lengthy practice session kept the brown and white gridath lethes busy until even the spot lights flashing the glow on the gridiron failed to penetrate the darkness sufficiently to continue the work it was a tired but much peppier crowd that dash ed for the showers when head coach wendell gave his orders to quit at the end of an exhaus tive workout con on page 5 col 5 doubt was expressed by the lehigh coaches as to the ability of herbert harmon to play more than a small portion of the con on page 6 col 6 lafayette opened its season with a game of midseason cali bre when it managed to defeat the fast muhlenberg team by the score of 20 to 14 borrelli the speedy halfback of the muh lenberg team scored both touch downs for his team one on a fifty yard off tackle dash and the other a straight end run of fifteen yards the maroon and white functioned better than had been expected the back field showed wonderful line cracking ability capt gebhard smashing through for gains of five to twenty yards the following saturday the leopards travelled west to pittsburgh and defeated the strong pitt team by a score of the rival captains beat lafayette captain merrill the rival coaches alone have given lafayette an enviable place in the football limelight their only defeat was at the hands of w and j who won only by the extra tally after touchdown after a great game played in new york as the result of their record they shall take the field as a favorite with only this victory needed to make their sea son a decided success they shall present a vet eran line-up and a backfield ahnoisti entirely composed of men who have played in two or even three lehigh games millman kirkleski and gebhard have all seen three years service in the backfield and in them coach mccracken has a most formidable ground gaining trio gebhard has been out all season with a serious injury to his leg but he most likely will be in condition to play on saturday coach mccrack en has taken twenty*five of his men up into a mountain camp near stroudsburg to rest up for the big battle and to be on edge when they journey down to bethlehem on saturday morn ing for the season's crucial game , lehigh at the start of the year promised to turn out a light fast team that should be fully capable of maintaining the excellent record set by last year's eleven only through a contin uous streak of serious injuries to his men has continued on page 2 column 6 tradition rivalry and spirit have combined to make such a name for the lehigh-lafayette annual football game that it has won a place as the best that the sporting world has to of fer in the way of stirring football battles the oldest of all collegiate football series this sat urday marks the occasion of the fifty-ninth an nual game between the two rivals lafayette at present is riding the crest of success hav ing achieved thirty-five victories to lehigh's twenty-one and having won for the past six years lehigh is putting out the very best pos sible effort to break the jinx years having lost only one game and that by the margin of a single point the maroon has tied colgate probably the sec ond best team in the east this year and has registered a victory over pitt the conquerors of the famous perm team these two games coach wendell captain gebhard coach mccracken had developed into one of outstanding backs in east before injury lehigh mentor has met with success both as player and coach brown and white leader has played star game for many years maroon tutor has continued good work of sutherland was ail-around player probable line-up for the game head coach percy wendell the man on whom a lot depends saturday has been very success ful in football both as a player and as a coach wendell was fullback on the teams of 1909 10 11 at har vard in 1910 and 11 he was honored by being named as ail american by the late walter camp before coming to lehigh coach wendell was at williams where he turned out successful teams in the four years that he was there williams defeated their rivals amherst and wes leyan all four years besides winning many other important games such as columbia un ion hamilton r p 1 and cornell con on page 2 col 5 by observing wendell's meth ods all year one can see that he is not only thinking of this year's team but is developing good players out of the men who will be here for the next few years and who will represent herbert mccracken known to all lehigh students as the men tor of the great maroon eleven is bringing his charges against a brown and white machine for the second time victorious in his first encounter the protege of the renowned pop warner will again present a powerful machine on saturday mccracken who has the dis tinction of being ambidextrous on the gridiron is completing his fourth year as tutor to grid iron warriors having been graduated from the university of pittsburgh in 1921 he went to allegheny college at mead ville penna and assumed the responsibility of showing the blue and gold how to become champions in their class which they did in 1923 from the western pennsylvania school mccracken jumped to easton where he undertook to continue the work of jock sutherland con on page 5 col 3 youth who is qualified in every respect to lead the lehigh grid warriors mer rill seems to take to the gridiron sport better than a duck takes to water and he has practically grown up on the chalked turf he came to lehigh four years ago ready and capable of as suming a varsity berth in his freshman year as he had three years experience on mercers burg's championship teams and two years of high school foot ball at the attic high school near his home at garrett pa everyone is familiar with the quality of the mercersburg foot ball elevens and during how dy's three years at that insti tution they had the most suc cessful teams in the history of the blue and white prep school con on page 2 col 5 louis red gebhard cap tain of lafayette's football ele ven this season is a product of phillipsburg n j this town which is just across the river from easton will be remember ed as being the home of charlie berry last season's maroon captain red played fullback on the phillipsburg high school team for four years after which he went to blair academy star ring on the football team there he matriculated at lafayette in september 1922 gebhard immediately report ed for football and played on the freshman team that year the following year he reported for the varsity under the tutelage of jock sutherland who was then head coach at lafayette while he made the team that year it wasn't until the follow ing year that he gained a per manent berth on the eleven he attained the height of his foot ball career on the maroon team of 1924 on which he was full con on page 6 col 2
