the second paper on a power plant in an ore mine by h w protzeller 05 contained much valuable data on a new jersey iron ore mine particularly in regard to the electrical equipment this was followed by a paper on the electrical appliances used in the pocohontas coal mine the mine referred to is located on the border line of virginia and west virginia and being in the soft coal field en abled a comparison to be formed oi the methods used in the soft and hard coal regions from these articles it was noted that electricity for hauling purposes in coal mines has proved to be far more economical than the use of mules and in general elec tricity is now being used very largely for a great part of the work in this connection such as for pumping lifts and the like one feature of the after-glow of the meeting at which chef georg was as usual up to par was sev eral selections rendered by the e e quartette composed of mer vine claw son clew ell 05 and baker 06 business meeting held tues day evening as announced in the last issue oi the brown and white the associa tion held its regular december busi ness meeting on tuesday evening after the reading of the minutes the chairmen of the various com mittees handed in the following re ports : the treasurer reported a bal ance of 60 30 with assets of 74.6 additional in bible study books sx d bills rveivob'e the bible study committee re ported two fourth-year classes with ten men two 1 third-year classes with 13 men three second-ytar classes with 15 men and ten first year classes with 85 men ; making a total of 123 men enrolled in seven teen classes meeting regular 1 / each week the devotional committ c re ported twelve sunday evening meetings with attendances a crag ing 113 men as against 60 for the same period last year prominent speakers and good music and in creased interest are responsible for tl is increase the membership committee nominated 65 men for active and 15 men for associate membership making a total of 244 men in th association the qualification for active membership consists in being a member of an evangelical church whereas for associate membership a good moral charac ter alone is required the missionary committee re ported 22 men engaged in mission study in three classes on the philip pines south america and china of the 1101 10 pledged for the support of mr harvey 36.30 ha been paid the hand book committee has done credi:able work in getting out a neat lehigh hand-book the advertisements have paid for ill ex penses and left a surplus of over 3 00 the mu-ic committee ha teen responsible for the excellent solo a permanent orchestra and other similar improvements at f h a asso ciation meetings the music is a g eat attraction md each men:h r should enter heartily in'o the snirit o the music general secretary edmonds sounded the keynote of true asso ciation spirit in his remarks and criticisms on the conduct o f s">rm a meeting of the mustard and cheese dramatic association was held at the chi psi house on wed nesday at 2 p.m the meeting was called to order by president scr warze who annouced that the mee lig was called to consider the ap propriation of money for the cage fund the association then voted to appropriatesso,the amount need ed to complete the necessary 2000 after this a committee composed of w s watson a p smith and g c keifer was appointed to look into the matter of selecting a play for this year's performance the constitution and by-laws were then read and approved as customary it was decided to have the picture of the cast of last years perfor mance published in the epitome after some further dicussion the meeting adjourned the starvation plating club en joyed its annual christmas spiel wednesday afternoon the hun gry band advanced to the sumptu ous feast amid the strains of sweet music furnished by a select orches tra after the feast which was thoroughly enjoyed by all the fol lowng toasts were responded to c d haye.3 president night the m e society held its third regular suc cessful meeting of the year at the ivgular meeting place in williams hall a very interesting paper was delivered by mr greene his subject gun rifling was treated in such a clear and concise manner that it met with the unanimous ap proval of he society mr greene has had the advantage of several years experience 111 this lint through his position with the win chester rifle and arms company his clear manner of presentatation conveyed a very good idea of the mode and manner employed by this firm in making their fire president mease followed this talk with an extemporaneous ex planation of the means employed by the bethlehem steel company in allowing for the recoil of heavy guns the usual social part of the evening was enhanced by a feed served by chef jim myers a gradual adjournment took place about 10.30 p m starvation spiel the forum cepted challenge from rutgers ac the forum literary societ held its regular meeting last wed nesday evening a good number of men were present and business of great importance was trans acted the challenge from rutgers college for a debate was the chief topic of interest after some dis cussion it was decided to accept the challenge the debate will be held in the latter part of february at rutgers college and will be upon the question resolved that the neutral nations should intervene by force if necessary in the russo japanese struggle the forum team which will be selected after the trials to be held the first wed nesday evening after the christmas vacation will discuss the negative side of the question it was decided to put forth an ef fort to secure a new cut for the epitome if possible the old cut has been on exhibition since 96 it is hoped that some artist will help the literary society out in this matter the regular program was dis pensed with for the evening and for the good of the society the as semblage was served with a deli cious luncheon mustard and cheese dramatic mines the l.vmber in attendance at this meet ing was larger than any previous occasion this term w h grady 06 presented thj first paper before the society on the application of electricity to coal mining specifically this dealt with the mines in die anthra cite region ot pennsylvania and the methods employed in breaking nd hauling the coal in the mines was clearly set forth a number of
