alumni clubs 1 occurred suddenly wednesday horning professor frazier of the depart ment of mineralogy died at his home on the campus january 4 1905 professor frazier in apparent good health was returning home from new york city tuesday afternoon january 3 when smitten with a stroke of paralysis he lost control of his voice at once and never regained the power of speech doctors walker and estes attended him but he was beyond the help of medical skill and died at 5 a m wednesday morning professor frazier is survived by his wife mrs alice clark frazier a brother w w frazier a sugar refiner of philadelphia and five children kenneth frazier 8.a 87 an artist of new york city arthur h frazier 8.a 89 secretary to the governor of porto rico her bert frazier graduate of harvard and lawyer in new york city mrs w w coleman of chicago illinois and miss isabel frazier who resides at the home of her parents benjamin west frazier was born in philadelphia october 3 1841 where he received his early educa tion he further pursued his studies in the university of penn sylvania and in 1859 took the degree of b a from that institution in 1862 he received the degree of m a and in 1882 was granted the depree of sc.d professor frazier also spent several years in study in freiburg germany further perfect ing himself for the professor-ship of his choice he came to lehigh in 1 87 1 and since that time has de voted himself almost entirely to the duties of his office when first called to this institution professor frazier was at the head of the department of mining engineering and metallurgy but under his guid ing hand these departments became unwieldy in size and it was deemed advisable to divide them further development made it necessary to give metallurgy and mineralogy separate departments and professor frazier became head of the depart ment of mineralogy professor frazier was a member of the ameri can institute of mining engineers member of american philosophical society fellow of the american i association for the advancement < of science he was also a vestry < man of the church of the nativity since 1880 ] the funeral of the late professor frazier was held in the packer ; memorial church friday morning ' at ir 30 a m notwithstanding 1 the fact that the weather was very inclement and many of the students had not yet returned from their christmas vacation the church was filled almost to overflowing a fitting token of respect to a de parted professor the episcopal form of funeral service was used the services were conducted by the rev dr g h sterling assisted by the rev s u mitman chaplain and the rev dr f m bird after the services the remains were escorted to the depot by the pall bearers and friends the remains were carried to philadel phia on the 12.45 p m train and laid to rest in the church yard of the church of st james the less whereas it has pleased god in his infinite wisdom to remove from our midst our dear friend and esteemed professor benjamin w frazier and whereas we the students of lehigh university mourn his loss and realize that in his departure we have lost one whole interests have ever been devoted to our welfare be it resolved that we extend to the mourning family of our deceased friend our most sincere sympathy in this our mutual affliction and loss and be it further resolved that a copy of these resolutions be printed in the college publications and that a copy be sent to the afflicted family of the deceased ralph g kirk james f leonard j m fouse committee meeting of pittsburg club editor brown and white lehigh south bethlehem pa dear sir : — the second month y y meeting of the pittsburg lehigh club was held at the monongahela club saturday december 17th 1904 with the following members present : messrs thurston,thomas bartholomew kinsley dl r smith allport v h kline schotte van allen mussena mur j.hy mccauley l marshall eck feldt f dravo turner h d miller hewett zahnhizer johnson l t girdle r reddig klinck r dravo cornelius bailey donald son evans brady dunnells war ring ford skillman matheson owing to the sickness of the presi dent g w snyder mr brady second v ice-president presided there was more or less informal discussion as to whether the alum ni of p^ttsburg should recommend any one for president of the uni versity after an interesting exchange of ideas it was decided to defer an action for the present the question of athletics was then brought up and discussed by sev eral of the members present anl the members of the club seemed to thnk that the best wav the pitts burgh club could help out athletic 0 at the university was to guarantee a certan s'l.n of money to heln de fray the expenses of the coaches for the various athletic teams it was moved seconded and carried that the pittsburg lehigh club pledge themselves for this purpose for the sum of 600 mr klinck who was present at the meeting then urges upon the alumni pres ent that if they knew of any me chanical apparatus either new or old that they can get hold of that they would confer a favor on the university if they would forward the apparatus the formal business meeting then adjourned and the rest of the evening was spent in informal speech making in which lehigh songs and lehigh cheers were plentifully interspersed the n eeting was voted by all present as a very pleasant and successful one and the pittsbuig lehigh club seams to have started in an era of attendances at the meetings and of an enthusiastic spirit the next meeting will be held on january 21st 1905 place to be ap pointed later and it is expected that even a larger turn-out than at the two previous meetings will be present action on death of dr drown at the fall meeting of the execu tive committee of the alumni association of lehigh university a special motion having precedence of other business was made whereby action was taken on the death of dr drown and the following reso lution was adopted : the alumni of lehigh university have learned with grief of their loss in the death of dr thomas mess inger drown president of the university it is fitting that the association as a body should at this time make formal record of the feeling entertained toward dr drown by the alumni and of their deep appreciation of the services he rendered to the university and to the cause of higher education in our country dr drown brought to lehigh when he entered on the duties of its presidency in 1895 the ripe experi ence of a man in his prime whose previous service at harvard la fayette and the massachusetts in stitute of technology had placed him in the first rank of educators and whose record as secretary and later as president of the american institute of mining engineers stamped him as an executive pos sessed of rare administrative skill and great business capacity his standing in the institute and his scientific work extending over a long series of years won him world wide reputation ;
