of du lulh and iron ore loading docks at that place his account of the va rious trips to the iron and copp.-r fields was very interesting photo graphs and drawings of the en gines of the largest copper mines were shown after a short discussion the mee + ing adjourned to an adjoining room where jim myers had pre pared some light refreshments forum meeting debating team chosen in spite oif the poor attendance at the forum meeting on wednesday night the eloquence of the speakers in the trials for the debate to be held with rutgers college was un bounded the affirmative of the question resolved that the neu tral powers should interfere by force if necessary in the war between russia and japan was up held by gilmore 06 woodring and reynolds 07 the negative which is to be lehigh s side in the rutgers debate was supported by martin 05 ; kuryla 05 and lee 06 the vote of the members pres ent upon the selection of speakers resulted in the choice of the follow ing team martin kuryla and lee with woodring as alternate in the business session held be fore the debate it was decided that a committee composed of the presi dent of the forum the three speak ers and the alternate chosen should decide upon the conditions offered by rutgers for the coming debate which will in all probability be held at new brunswick on febru ary 17 donations to library mr stauffer of the university library announces the donation of a number of books on taesday and wednesday of last week some from the university of chicago through president har per and the others from mr j s elkinton a quaker gentleman of philadelphia an account of the latter volume of books entitled the friends library will be given in the next issue of the brown and white the donation from the univer sity of chicago consists of ten vol umes quarto size hand somely bound in silk cloth com prising the first series of the de cennial publications — issued in commemoration of the completion of the first ten years of the uni versity's existence there are two volumes of reoorts and eight of in vestigations the latter consisting of a collection of articles representing the work of research of the several departments of the university of chicago organized during the de cennium the subjects are as fol lows : vol i the president's report alumni notes promotion of graduates the following magazine clip pings dealing with the works of two of lehigh s foremost ajumni mr robert drier cooke b a 84 and mr chas boynton b s 89 graduates of the school of general literature will be of interest to the student body the first appearing in the january number of the critic reads : mr robert g cooke has taken over the publication of the burling ton magazine which has the dis tinction of being the most expen sive as well as the handsomest art raagazine published in english a magazine of this sort just fits in with mr cooke's business which is the making of handsome books — books by the way which seldom get into the book-shops but are made for the owners of private libraries and private collections cf pictures and other objects of art a sketch of ir chas h boyn ton's areer given in last week's immber of leslie's magazine reads as follows after graduation he went to washington and entced the wash ington bureau of the cincinnati commercial gazette of which his uncle general h v boynton was correspondent later hu joined the s-raff of i-e washington post be ginning with the small assignment that usually falls to the new report er he covered the police and other routine departments and finalh l>ecame special assignment man and did much political writing from the post he went to the washington star and was soon made a member of the capitol staff on that paper he also covered at times the execu tive departments and his connec tion with these two papers gave him a wide reportoria experience mr boynton left the star to axept a position it the washington office of the associated press of which his father charles a boynton the southern superintendent is in charge he soon became night manager of that office a position which he held until december is9b when he was appointed cor respondent of the associaied pres at paris mr boynton remained in paris until the spring of 1901 when he was recalled and appoint ed superintendent of the eastern division of the associated press he retains this office and elect members for the class book com mittee vice president yon ber ries presided it was decided to have the o:nmittee consist of seven members after nominations and balloting the following were elected to get out the class book of 1905 • schwarze kirk hayes hender son fouse seipt and kautz mining society prof eckfeldt speaks the regular monthly meeting of the mining and geological society wias held wednesday evening in williams hall professors eckfeldt and irving were elected members of the board of advisors a com mittee composed of fouse lauer and barth was appointed to obtain a suitable design for the epitome insertion after the business had been transacted herbert h latter 06 gave an entertaining talk upon the bellefontaine reservoir and filter plant mr latter told of the methods employed for shortening the work in laying out the plan of excavation and concrete walls of the reservoirs tie also spoke of the method of construction and ope ration of the filters proper prof eckfeldt of the mining department told of his trip to the lake superior region with the american institute of mining en gineers in september 1904 he also gave a short resume of the history of the institute it was or ganized in ib7i,the late dr drown being one of the original organ izers its first meeting was held at wilkesbarre in may 1871 and its second at bethlehem in august dr coppee who was president of lehigh extended the courtesies of the university to the institute and the meeting was held in packer hall
