score 35=30 slow and uninteresting game lehigh met her first defeat of j the season last saturday night at the hands of the red and blue in a not and closely-contested game by the score of 35-30 owing to the fact of a game be tween the university freshmen and central high school the game was not called until 8.45 penn sylvania started with 1 rush and on a long pass from flint kunkel scored the first basket for perm at this point a foul was called on kunkel for striking pierce throw ing the goal on the toss up pierce passed to troutman who scored for lehigh kunkel who played by far the best game for pennsylvania threw three goals ill rapid succession flint added two more points on fouls by mcmullen and troutman lehigh braced ani scored on throws by mcmullen and troutman mcmullen's which was thrown from the centre of the floor t>eing by far the prettiest goal of the evening flint scored for pennsylvania and added another point on a foul by anderson two more goals by kunkel ended penn sylvania's run and lehigh scored twice on fouls by flint and walker pierce throwing the goals flint scored twice and troutman ence with only a minute to 1 play kunkel threw a goal and flint scored x on a foul by anderson score at the end of the first half penna 22 ; lehigh 1 1 . in the beginning of the second half kunkel scored again on the first play on a clever throw from the corner of the floor by good team work lehigh managed to get a goal anderson throwing it kun kel threw the next goal from out side but the referee awarded the decision to pennsylvania on ac count of his not having seen the play fouls by troutman and pierce netted two more points for perm troutman and mcmullen each got a goal and pierce threw one from a foul by lawrence here lehigh showed what she was made of with only one minute left to flay she began to set a whirlwind pace troutman and anderson each made a basket and were closely followed by goals by pierce and travis kunkel scored for pennsylvania and flint on three fouls anderson and troutman each threw one more time was called here end of second half score — pennsylvania 35 ; lehigh 50 lehigh was immensely handi capped on account of the large floor and by the absence of berg who was unable to accompany the team on account of sickness penn sylvania's style of play differs en tirely from lehigh's lehigh using a short pass while pennsylvania uses a long one pennsylvania would have been totally outclassed without kunkel who is probably one of the best men playing inter collegiate basket ball he threw ten out of the thirteen goals made by pennsylvania for lehigh an derson and troutman played the best game the line-up : perm position lehigh kunkel . . forward . . anderson flint forward . troutrnar walker . . centre pierce lawrence guard mcmullen,capt fales ehlers guard travis score pennsylvania 35 ; mcmullen 2 ; travis 2 ; pierce 2 ; anderson 2 ; ehlers referee william schef fer time of halves twenty min utes y m c a meeting prof a g rau of the mora vian parochial school gave a very interesting talk to the fellows on sunday evening in his very char acteristic way he explained each step in the change of pagan eu rope during the dark ages which resulted in the renaissance such changes are occurring each day in the lives of men in their warfare between the teachings of theolop - \ and science in this struggle to know whether we are of christ or not let us simply consider whether we are trying to do what he did do whatever our calling may be his talk was based on the passage the truth shall make you free lacrosse prospects by captain w l estes the outlook for the coming la crosse season is as rght as we have had for some years though we lost three good men by gradua tion and may lose one other the nucleus left and the substitutes and scrub of last year should be a foundation of a team that ought to give an excellent account of itself however there is need of big men for the team preferrably foot ball men three out of the four men we lose were defense men and their place ought to be filled by big husky active players yet there is a chance for everybody no mail of 3'ear's team need feel himself assured of his position and unless he comes out and works hard and earns it he will not be considered for freshiren this v-ar is a great opportunity to come nt and learn the game they are the men we look forward to for future var sity teams and the scrub with which to make this year's var sity a success it is to be regretted that for some reason the cage has not been finished as yet the delay is a se rious loss to our preliminary prac tice and every one is urged to keep busy with his stick by himself or i t he has none to procure a new one at the gym and break it in with regard to coach we may say that several good men are in view and a definite announcement will be made the first of next month of last year's tenm there are still in college the following men • defense carlock kirk merri ni.an centre barwis ; attack estes de schweinitz wrightson and harrower beside these men the two substitutes von borries and hendricks are in college and al most all of the best men of last year's scrub are back regain a big squad should be out for the first practice and every follow ing one everyone will have a show and let everyone lend aid in his way towards bringing the championship to lehigh regarding exams the first term of the university work will close thursdr.v at 6 p.m examinations will begin frida morning at 8.30 o'clock the roster of examinations will be posted in packer hall either tues day or wednesday lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday january 24 1905 vol xii no 30 brown and white lehigh defeated by penn e e society mr crawford speaks on thursday evening january 19 the first meeting of the electri cal engineering society for the new year was held the society wais honored in the presence of mr m a maxwell superinten dent of the easton power com pany he gave a most comprehen sive and valuable talk to the mem bers in attendance the subject being practical hints in central station management mr max well's varied experiences in this connection enabled hint to set forth many points which if followed by professional men of this branch of work would save much unneces sary trouble and expense the special feature of these remarks was a comparison of the various methods of generating power with their relative advantages and dis advantages the rapid strides of the steam turbine and gas engine make it exceeding v important that all engineers be thoroughly conversant with the merits of these prime movers hence the value of these w r as taken up at some length g h schaeffer the first speaker of the evening presented a paper on a power station at reading the speaker having been in the em ploy of said station was able to give many interesting details of this plant particular attention was paid to methods of handling the ash motor equipment and the like mr c m crawford's paper on the electrical equipment of a fall river boat completed the evening's program the furnishing of a modern vessel with light is of more interest than might at first be supposed the difficulties and hindrances involved in the wiring of a boat while under construction was set forth by mr crawford in a most interesting manner he hav ing had the privilege of engaging in this part of ihe work a number of years ago it may be of interest to note one fact brought out name ly that at present theie are no un derwriters requirements for the wiring of a steamshirx after adjournment the society repaired to the second floor of the physical laboratory where george had an excelelnt lay out pre pared c i lattig ex 03 is employed with the automatic telephone company of rochester new york
