y m c a mr m w ehnes speaks mr m w ehnes of ohio wes leyan university talked to the fellows on sunday night about the " students of christian and non christian lands in his first re marks he showed that the features of the young men's christian association gave it great advan tages over other organizations for doing certain kinds of religious work it is non-denominational which fact gives it entrance into the colleges of our country and the army and navy president roose velt was largely instrumental in establishing five branches of this organization along the panama route to be supported by the government it reaches the rail road men and those other industries where it is impossible for the church to enter in colleges it has great responsibilities in reaching the fellows when we consider that the higher and more developed the intellect the greater the tempta tions to which it becomes subject we see the power of the association in this field the world's student christian federation is a branch of christian work which binds together the students of the whole world in france the student is ignorant and indifferent about re ligion in germany he is a ma terialist and skeptic the students of japan where at the university of tokio alone they number over forty-seven thousand come from homes of heathenism and gross immorality india has one hundred and eighty student centers where buddhism and the caste system are to be overcome china has over one million literati who after securing government positions have an opportunity to oppress the lower classes the speaker showed how chris tianity alone was the religion that could reclaim this vast student body to noble and pure lives christianity is superior to other forms of religion because of its respect for womanhood and its offer of salvation mr ehnes is at present one of the secretaries of the student vol unteer movement he is a fine example of the christian athlete for four years he played left half back on the team of his alma mater being its captain in 97 the fellows who came out in spite of the rainy weather were glad to hear and meet mr ehnes fraternity initiates list of freshmen taken in the trials for cast next saturday the trials for cast parts have been highly satisfactory in order to give everybody an equal oppor tunity for competition at the final trials saturday february 18 a list of the cast characters is hereby given with a brief description of each part all those who are trying for parts on the cast will select the part they want to try for and be on hand saturday afternoon at 3 p m the characters are : jack homer a freshman who is in love with the daughter of the presi dent of the university josephine he posseses an unusual supply of the usual freshman's freshness the president of the university who holds his position by reason of patrician birth is very anxious to do anything to keep his job a swell head and bluffing at dignity would characterize this part the secretary of the faculty who is an ambitious man wants to im prove his social position and at the same time get more influence at the university by marrying the president's daughter josephine a pompous self-confident character fits this part josephine the president's daugh ter who is a pupil at the fern sem age about 16 miss moravia a fern sem teacher who is rather antique but wants to get married buttevsemmel a vender of articles on the campus who is a buxom pennsylvania dutch lass in love with the president a leader of sophomores an officious student who tries to curb the ambitious freshman buck a janitor who has the habit of spying since the last two are very short they should be taken together to constitute a cast part taken separately they will only count as a chorus part now a word about the chorus we are going to have some splen did music and need a large chorus it will therefore be a comparatively easy matter to " make " the chorus if you have any kind of a voice and can carry an air trials for places will be held next saturday at 3 p m ( and everybody who wants to get on the chorus should be at christmas hall at that time through some mistake the chorus continued the season was held in the gymnasium saturday j night the university of pennsyl vania being lehigh's opponents i the result of the meet clearly shows the effects of dr davis coaching in spite of the inter ruption in practice caused by the examination week the team showed up in excellent form the atten dance far surpassed that at any previous meet and the applause was very hearty for each of the contestants for lehigh evans fernandez moore stauffer and brown did excellent work krauss pennsylvania's captain was the star of his team and won both of the firsts won by his side results of contests
