the basket ball team visited swarthmore on saturday after noon and played the annual game although defeated the team made a desperate fight and lost by no large score at the beginning of ihe first half on a lightning burst of speed and clever team work lehigh scored three field goals in rapid succession during this time swarthmore had begun to realize the situation and the sensational work of turner farquhar and palmier soon brought them into a better standing the play continued fast and exciting all through this half neither team being able to lead the score — 18 to 18 when the second half opened swarthmore substituted heed for price while lehigh made no changes again lehigh started off with a rush and was soon in the lead the swarthmore five how 1 ever rallied again and played faster and with more certainty than at any timie in the game the slip pery condition of the floor was a great disadvantage to the lehigh team tand was the cause of many unfortunate passes and steps nevertheless mcmullen ander son and troutman overcame these difficulties and played a strong game in their positions final score — swatrhmore 34 ; rev gilbert h sterling d d of the church of the na tivity south bethlehem and aug ustus parker smith m e 84 ll 8 of new york city their decisions were all unanimous and the prizes were awarded as follows first prize of 25 to john huston clark gregg ; second prize of 15 to reenen jacob van reenen third prize of 10 to howard raymond stocker a very interesting meeting of the civil engineering society was held on tuesday evening the sub ject being " railroad night af ter the regular business had been transacted the program for the evening was carried out the first speaker was pyne 06 on the sub ject " the manufacture of steel rails he traced the different steps in the manufacture from the time the ore is mined until the fin ished rail is turned out the next number on the pro gram was a paper on " the survey for reading and adamstown trol ley road by stocker 06 the speaker was connected with the work during the past summer and told in a most interesting manner of some of the difficulties encoun tered he was followed by merri man 06 who spoke on " the im provement of an existing railroad line the name of this road could not be divulged for financial reasons but mr merriman gave some interesting calculations as to whether the improvements pay or not the last speaker of the evening was prof merriman who gave a comparison between european and american railroads he said that one noteworthy thing both about the european street cars and steam cars was the uniform politeness of the conductors the underground systems do not seem to be as up to date as our own but are built much farther underground freight business on the european railroads does not meet the proportions which it does in this country and the methods for switching the cars in yards are all very crude the passenger coaches are all of the compartment class but have the advantage of being able to be emp tied and filled in a short time but on the whole the european passen ger coaches are much lighter than our own and hence do not ride as easily prof merriman also visit ed some interesting alpine rail ways after the meeting adjourned a light repast was served by " chef myers continued on third page a famous reader to speak here on tuesday night of the course of four entertain ments which the young men's christian association of lehigh has arranged for presentation in the lecture hall of the physical laboratory during the next two months three consist of lectures which will be given as follows : by dr takasugi of the imperial college at sapporo japan ; by hamlin garland the well-known novelist of western life and by ernest thompson seton the cele brated*naturalist and author the first number of the course to be given next tuesday evening feb ruary 28 differs from these in that it is not a lecture but a series of dramatic recitals by the distin guished artiste miss margaret barry in a recent issue of this paper we quoted the words of un qualified praise bestowed upon miss barry by president roose velt bishop potter james whit comb riley and several great newspapers to these we would add the following splendid notices " her name and fame will go down with the great artists of the world — hon h w watterson a wonderful personality great magnetism ; the best i have ever heard — hon wm j bryan " her exquisite grace of action and richness of voice make each performance a poem i heartily congratulate those who may hear her — richard harding davis a great artiste — hon bourke cockran " endowed by nature with a voice as clear and sweet as a lute ; possessing the strong intellectuality that enables her to give the various authors their correct and true meaning margaret barry enter tained the vast audience composed mostly of yale faculty and stu dents in a manner that made it a positive triumph for this brilliant woman — new haven palladium the program which has been selected for presentation by miss barry upon her appearance here next tuesday is victor hugo's " les miserables it will consist of six parts as follows : scene i — the bishop scene ii — the mayor scene iii — the convent scene iv — the gamin scene v — the sewer scene vl death every one who has read les miserables will naturally be eager on saturday night a team com posed of lehigh freshmen played the nativity reserves in basket ball between the halves of the bethle hem prep-nativity game the stu dents won by the score of 15 to 11 the line up of the 1908 mien com posed the following heck stiles sterner snyder and long forty-five hundred new seats were added to the yale football stands last summer making the to tal capacity now 31,000 basket ball team loses at swarthmore no 36
