lehigh university m e society south bethlehem pa tuesday february 28 1905 vol xii chicago-lehigh club no 37 the brown and white y m c a prof schmucker speaks as previously announced dr schmucker spoke on the subject " the faith of an evolutionist at the association meeting on sun day night he said : " science is man's interpretation of god's reve lation in the bible science has established beyond the least doubt that first the world is inconceiv ably old ; second that man has been on the earth as man for at 1 least fifty thousand years and third that man is the last and high est evolution on the other hand the bible informs us that the heav ens and the earth were made in six days on the last of which man was set down and a soul breathed into him these statements must be adjusted so as to be acceptable to both scientist and theologian the events of the bible are recorded as they appeared to the author of each book and his method of explana tion appealed to the people of that age that explanation would be made different by him today and our explanation today will not suf fice for the people several centuries from today hence the bible could not have been written in a manner that would appeal to the people of all ages as man's evolution con tinues he interprets the bible differ ently — in keeping with his own ideas adam as understood today by an evolutionist represents prehis historic man in his last remarks the speaker said that the christian be he an evolutionist or a literal interpreter of the bible agrees that god is the great creator of all things that he is interested in man loves him and hates the evil in god's revelation to each man he meets man with his own mind basket ball lehigh defeats cornell the basket-ball team showed a return to its earlier form on satur day night when it defeated cor nell's five by the score of 36 to 19 corrtell's team had just come from trouncing the university of penn sylvania and was confident of vic tory especially in view of lehigh's sad reversal in form as shown in the last few games the game was an exceptionally good one as both teams are very fast and both played with great spirit the passing and blocking of both teams were very good there being little to choose between them but in goal throwing lehigh greatly surpassed her opponent nearly all of her tries at goal were successful while out of sixteen clear trials in the first half cornell was only able to cage the ball three times capt brine 1 - erhoff and root of cornell played the best game for their team for lehigh trout man and pierces goal throwing was exceptionally good berg and | capt mcmullen played well at guards and kept their men pretty well covered only three of cor nell's goals being made by the for wards long goal shots from be yond the center of the field by brinckerhoff of cornell and ander son of lehigh were features of the game the game opened with a rush at 8:20 p m neither side scored for the first five minutes when pierce tallied one on a foul the half ended with the score cornell 6 le high 18 in the second half lehigh failed to cover her men and cornell got 6 field goals in this half numer ous fouls\^ere called on each team pierce converted six of these in succession into goals the score at the end of the game was : le high 36 cornell 19 after the game a short informal dance was given on the gym floor the time of halves continued on fourth page interesting papers read an interesting meeting of the mechanical engineering society was held in williams hall on thursday evening at 8 o'clock a brief business meeting was held during which a vote of thanks was tendered the de laval steam turbine company for the recent lecture the dues of the society were fixed at 1.50 a year or 1 a term the first paper of the evening was by prof heck on " the de termination of the specific heat of superheated steam he ex plained four methods of obtaining experimentally the specific heat of superheated steam and pointed out the great variation between the re sults obtained in different cases the conclusions drawn were that as yet the exact values of the spe cific heat of superheated steam for different conditions are not known but that it is certain that the value of 48 given by regnault does not hold good for all conditions and that the specific heat increases with the temperature and pressure fear 06 who was scheduled for a paper on " some fine points of boiler testing was unable to be present lotz 06 took his place with an interesting talk on brick making and brick-making machin ery of the wyomissing plant of the american brick company he de scribed the location and facilities of the plant and the process of manu facture which is as follows : clayey shale taken from a nearby mound is dumped into a crusher powdered and sieved the material is then run through a mixer where it is made into a paste by the addition of water it is then pressed through a form which gives it the shape of a long continuous column whose sectional dimensions are the length and height of the brick the bricks are then completed by wire cutting this column the porosity of the brick is low and it is essen tially a building brick an interesting paper on " quick return mechanism was read by dent 05 the value of quick re turn devices for planers shapers etc was pointed out numerous examples were discussed among them being the whitworth and elliptical gears each example was treated kinematically the revolu successful annual meeting held the annual meeting of the chi cago lehigh club was held feb ruary 21 1905 at 6.30 o'clock at the grand pacific hotel a splen did menu had been arranged by the committee the following were present : hart coleman jacoby williams myers denise keller lambert rhodes goodwin meixell coates farabaugh jenness felix and mr mason of troy and mr cox of the u p . the minutes of the meeting held january 24 1905 were read and approved it was moved " that a committee of three be appointed by the chair to draw up suitable resolutions on the death of dr drown and on the death of prof frazier and that copies of such resolutions be sent to the respective families and that the same be caused to be published in the brown and white this motion was duly carried the chair named the following as the committee : f r coates w l jacoby and c m denise the nominating committee re ported the following slate : for president f r coates for vice-president w w cole man 1 for secretary and treasurer c m denise it was voted " that the report of the nominating committee be ap | proved and that the secretary be instructed to cast the ballot for the persons nominated as officers of the club for the ensuing year the chairman thereupon de clared f r coates president w w coleman vice president c m denise secretary and treasurer i after some discussion as to the future policy of the club it was moved " that regular meetings of the club shall be held on the first saturday evening of february april june october and decem ber the motion was carried and on motion of mr hart seconded by mr coleman it was voted " that the meetings be held at 7.30 p m after some discussion on the advisability of this club express ing an opinion as to the proper person to become the head of the continued on third page senior class meeting a meeting of the senior class was held on friday morning for the purpose of electing the committee for the class day exercises the men elected were kirk de schweinitz gilliam henderson and ryan the president appointed clay kline payne and leonard on the class banquet committee after a short discussion as to the advisabilty of erecting a memorial by the class at graduation a com mittee consisting of kautz gaw throp and henderson was ap pointed to
