novelist mr garland comes to us with a ripe experience of men and affairs and especially of the proceedings of the great west he has an intimate and personal ac quaintance with the peculiar phases of western life which he depicts in his books and lectures which give a charm and originality to his work which is rarely met with besides being an exeedingly en tertaining lecturer mr garland has selected that phase of human exist ence which is now passing into the historical past and in a few short years will be a matter for annalists to deal with entirely the western life of fifty years ago has always attracted attention and doubtless always will for its reminiscences of daring and bravery its wildness and unrestraint from any human law the joys of the trail the hunt the struggles with the indians — all ap peal to the combative side of our emotions he has the real living west to deal with the conquest of an immense tract of land the fight for existence among a thousand and one obstacles and he succeeds as has been rarely done joys of the trail is the au thor's favorite theme and is a pre sentation of the dangers beauties exaltations and teachings of the wild lands it sums up in prose and verse experiences with a pack train in colorado arizona montana washington and british columbia it sets forth the signals and signs of the trail and expresses some thing of the almost universal long ing of the civilized man for the tepee and the running stream it appeals with almost equal power to those who have never been in the wild and to those who long to tread again the solitary way it has its humorous incidents also and gives much practical instruc tion in the art of trailing and camp ing mr garland then has an enter taining subject to deal with his personality is
