. prof john l stewart of the le high faculty gave a very interesting talk to the fellows on sunday even ing on the rubject of the relation of christianity to civilization in his remarks he showed that by tracing back the development of each it is impossible to locate their exact beginning one bright spot in the development of judaism oc curred about two thousand years ago when there was born a jew whose words and teachings led to his death for the next two hun dred years we hear very little of his cause the questions as to whether christianity can exist without a civilization or whether a civiliza tion can exist without christianity are portentous ones apparently the answers are yes as are shown by the russian and japanese na tions to-day the fall of roman civilization was due according to slome to he christian religion how then are the two related the point of contact lies in the teaching of christ himself who deliberately willed and determined that man should live — not by bread alone but in the world of mind and development that chris tianity which holds to old traditions and suppressed education and men tal development leads civilization backwards over the world there is a sort of feeling that scientific men are without the church the reformation was a direct result of the opposition of the roman church to anything but strict ad herence to the old fixed forms the great minds of that age refused to be limited to the narrowness and dogmatism of the existing church the pharasees at the time of christ had a perverted idea of what con stituted true service to god in pennsylvania to-day there are many religious sects who fail to advance because they follow the fixed nar row rules laid down for their con duct and worship civilization is the emphasis in man that he is not 1 brute and christianity is the main factor in producing this impression chris tianity if of service to civilization is in no sense inimicable to progress the lehigh chapter of the tau beta pi honorary fraternity will hold a banquet at the eagle hotel bethlehem on wednesday evening april qth the faculty and teaching force of the university have arranged to spend friday evenings at the le high home club in bethlehem for ' the purpose of good fellowship and social recreation about thirty members were present at the first meeting last week base ball season opens with a victory the base ball season was opened in a very auspicious manner satur day afternoon when lehigh de feated moravian college of beth lehem on lehigh field by the score of 10 to 1 it was the first game oi the year for both teams and both showed up exceptionally well for this early in the season moravian college had a strong battery and with better support would h{ave made a close game the work of lehigh's team was very encouraging indeed the new men all showed up well both in fielding and batting while the stick work of the old men had improved over last year a strong wind blowing across the diamond was the cause of several errors on both sides and the rough condition of the diamond accounted for several others ballinger pitched the entire game for lehigh and was quite effective striking out eleven men and allow ing but two hits under coach maul's direction he promises to de velop into a first-class pitcher the game was called promptly at 3 o'clock the first m c man up sent an easy grounder to snvder and the next two struck out in lehigh's half of this inning blazer was hit by a pitched bail and sent to first was advanced to second by root's single past second and scored on hnyder's hit to center field ballinger was gjven his base on balls on a wild throw to second both root and snyder scored bal linger was caught stealing third long made first on schaefer's error steiner was hit and burchsted given his base on bails filling the bases mcmurtrie struck out end ing lehigh's scoring for the inning in the second inning gap was given his base on balls and on a wild throw by mcmurtrie made the circuit of the bases and scored m c.'s only run from then on to the end of the game not an m c man got past second base lehigh scored again in the third inning when ballinger laced out a two-base hit to right field and tallied when schaefer juggled burchsted's grounder in the seventh inning ballinger cullen and long crossed the plate bringing in three more runs the eighth inning also brought in three runs snyder sin gled and stole second biallinger struck out cullen sent a two-base continued on fourth page notice a meeting of the tennis club is called at been working for nearly two weeks there is a large number of fresh men out but there are ctill some of the old men who have not reported it seems to be the general opin ion that there is no especial work to train for till after easter but this is not the case and all men are urged to come out and work faithfully the inter-class games will prob ably be held on monday april 17 there will be a banner contested for by the four classes and every one who has ever done any track work or thinks he would like to should enter them the winners of either first or second place in this meet will be given their class nu merals besides this before the regular meets start the first of which is on may 6 a part of the track team will probab;y go either to pennsyl vania or princeton to compete there the outlook is very good for this season ; for besides the men of last year's team there are a number of freshmen who ought to develop into good men only a few lockers in the field house have been given to the men but there are eight or ten more waiting for those who do good work forum meeting chi phi base ball team the next forum meeting will be held wednesday evening april 12 a special program has been ar ranged after which officers for the ensuing year will be elected the committee has arranged besides a good feed all members are urged to be present wayside inn base ball team at a special meeting of the way side inn eating club friday it was decided to have a base ball team this spring the club voted to play the starvation club if they are willing and perhaps other
