the sudden death of our much honored and loved president thomas messinger drown on no vember 16 1904 calls for more than words ; our hearts warm to ward him nd ever will as memory reverts to our association with him in past years dr drown came to lehigh uni versity in 1895 and during the nine years of his presidency a total the committee will contain a lunch room billiard and pool rooms and bowling alleys ; quarters for the young men's christian associa tion engineering and literary so cieties accommodations for the i tniversity social functions ; offices for the alumni association and a comfortable room for holding the annual meeting of the association an appeal for subscriptions to the fund for the erection of this building will in a short time be mailed to the alumni and former students to friends of the univer sity and to the professional and scientific friends of dr drown with whom he was for so many years associated description of drown memorial hall the late president thomas messinger drown the committe is not prepared at the present time to give final di mensions and drawings of the pro posed drown memorial hall but perfectly definite conclusions re garding its plan and scope have been reached and these may be stated as followsf ollowsollowso 1 lows : the structure three stories high should be constructed of potsdam sandstone with gray sandstone trimmings comporting in architec ture and material with the other college buildings in the first or basement story will be located a dining or cafe room with store rooms and kitchen two bowling alleys the supply bureau room and lavatories the serving of midday lunches and regular meals to the students it contemplated as also the opera tion of training tables for the ath letic teams ; it is proposed to fur nish good plain wholesome food at a minimum cost on the second floor will be lo cated a commodious hill to be used as a smoking and conversation room billiard room a large read ing room with chess room adjoin ing a coat room and zn office for the superintendent on the third floor there will be a large auditorium with a stage and dressing ooms ; offices for the young men's christian associa tion athletic committee alumni association engineering societies and students editorial boards there will also be rooms on this floor for storing china and serving refreshments it is proposed to provide in this memorial hall for all the social dramatic musical and literary the death of thomas messinger drown took from ihe scientific world a man whose ability and worth were universally recognized it is fitting that his services to the cause of education and in the ad vancement of science should be commemorated by some perma nent memorial which should so far as possible perpetuate the record of the work in which he felt so great an interest and to which the last ten years of his life were devoted before coming to lehigh his connection with the american in stitute of mining engineers with lafayette college and with the massachusetts institute of tech nology had given him a wide expe rience and a thorough knowledge of the needs of technical education as president of lehigh univer sity dr drown ever had at heart not only the education but the hap piness and well-being <. f the young men under his charge and during the last years of his life it was his wish to add to the equipment of the university a building that should be devoted to the social life of the students what belter tribute could be paid to his memory than to carry out this project after his death and perpetuate in a memo rial hall erected on the campus the record of the loving care and wisp direction given by him in the years he devoted to the education and training of the young men under his charge ? the committe cons^'.mted to con sider this project has decided to raise a fund of eighty thousand dollars 80,000 for the purpose or erecting and equipping the drown memorial hall chairman of committee robert h savre trustee representatives wil liam it sayre henry s drinker william a lathrop faculty representatives wil liam h chandler mansfield mer riman charles l thornburg secretary of committee p a lambert â– alumni representatives rem brandt peale 83 new york john a jardine 84 philadelphia ; francis r dravo 87 pittsburg of this character and their opera tion at various educational insti tutions and expects shortly to be able to lay the whole project before the alumni and friends of the uni versity and of dr drown the building contemplated by â– such a building will do more to unify the students bring them to gether and promote college feeling than anything that can be done at the present time and it is hoped that all lehigh men will take an active interest in the erection of this memorial to a man who did much for lehigh and to whose love for lehigh and lehigh's student life it will be so fitting a tribute of 6oq young men 43 per cent of the total ahimni of lehigh were graduated under his watchful and earnest care to take an honorable manly place among men the reg ister of 1 904 1 905 shows an enroll ment of 630 students the largest in the history of the university after the death of dr drown the thought naturally suggested it â– self that his services to science to technical education and to le high should be commemorated by a memorial in some form and the proper form of this tribute has been the subject of careful consid eration by certain of our alumni by members of the board of tnis no 49 special alumni edition the brown and white vol xii lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday april 14 1905 drown memorial fund tees and of the faculty as a result a committee on the drown me morial fund was formed consist ing of representatives of the trus tees faculty and alumni after considerable discussion this committee decided to take up dr drowns own favorite project which duririp his lifetime he had so much at heart the erection of a club building devoted ro the social life of the rtudents the commit tee has decided to erect such a building to be called drown memorial hall the com mittee has investigated buildings drown memorial hall
