the first half ended with the ball on lehigh's forty yard line and in their own possession due to the slippery ground and the injuries re sulting the seminary used several few men in a number of the posi tions when the second half opened and went at their opponents with renewed vigor but the visitors too had rested and they too were out to make a score or know why the sides al ternated making small gains on each other but both being held without making the distance or else losing the ball on fumbles during the second half the visiting team seemed the stronger and made re peated gains but although they played as hard as they knew how to do they not once threatened to score on the seminary team toward the end of the second half after some furious rushes that brought the blood to the cheeks of the spectators the seminary team carried the ball to the lehigh's 20 yard line with a series of rushes and a quarter-back play there however they were held up as if they were rushing against a wall of cement rather than one of flesh and blood on the last down they were compelled to give up the ball al though they were within a few t inches of the place that meant a first down a kick by the lehigh team sent the ball out of danger and after that the play was about the centre of the field with neither side having any definite advantage among the plays most noticeable were two 25-yard runs by butler of lehigh the longest gains of the game the line bucking of cass and the general imnrovement in defen sive work on the part of the semi nary players the game was the hardest of the a meeting of the freshman class was held in saucon hall the following offi cers were elected : president kiefer vice president duncan secretary blazer treasurer bay less historian h g brown athletic representative carlock a'well played game ends in no score despite the fact that jupiter plu vius opened the flood gates of the heavens several hundred admirers of the wyoming seminary team and a handful of the lehigh root ers went to wyoming field to see the game between the lehigh reserves and the seminary de fenders it was one of the hottest games of the season de spite the fact that the ball was wet and slippery and the ground was anything but fast the players slid and scampered all over the ground and the specta tors stood in long rows along the side lines watching and cheering each individual play not daunted by the name that the visitors had gained through their attacks on lehigh's big eleven wyoming's oys started in to win the game if such a thing was pos sible and although they did not win neither side scoring they made an enviable reputaion by hold ing their opponents at times when it seemed that they must score from start to finish it was a battle royal and the spectators could well afford wet feet and the possible colds which were to follow for the sake of having witnessed the best game of the year the score of o-o tells but a part of the story and there is no doubt but that the seminary boys learned many a good lesson during the game the reserves were rather non-plussed at the plays that the seminary boys had up their sleeves but they too played a steady game and were so evenly matched that the spectators held their breath until the last play was finished and the whistle blown as a signal to end the game both teams started out with a rush and by the continued fumbl ing due to the wet ball the specta tors were k^-t in a fever of expec tancy the first half was a series of line-bucking by both sides the speedy backs were used very little because of the slippery condition of the field and because before they could get up steam they were laid low by the forwards or ends of the opposing teams only once during the first half did the lehigh's threaten the goal of the seminary and that was when they went with a rush to the twenty-yard line of the visitors there however they were held for downs after a costly fumble when the ball was regained for a small loss notice all candidates for the sophomore basket ball team will meet in the gym at 1.30 p m on saturday a general organization will then be affected and methods schedule etc will be discussed by order of the president foot ball accidents flere are some interesting facts about our popular game taken from the educational review 1 about one college man in ten the country over plays foot ball 2 about twice as large a propor tion of the men in the small col leges play the game as in the large 3 the proportion of men seems to be slightly decreasing 4 about one player in 35 is suf ficiently injured each season to ne cessitate the loss of time from col lege duties 5 the number of college foot ball players who are permanetly injured or die from the effects of the game is so small as to be prac tically a neglible quantity 6 college foot ball is adequately supervised in nearly all the institu tions 7 the opinion of college officers regarding the value of the game is roughly 17.1 in favor weighed in terms of enrollment 8 the newspaper reports of in juries to college foot ball players seem to be grossly exaggerated xot so much so in the case of play ers upon other sunday evening the subject he discussed was mission study he spoke in general as follows : men should know of men in general we know those in our own communi ties and owe duties to them we should also know of those far from us for we have responsibilities to ward them our interests are largely depen dent on our knowledge we can procure knowledge of heathen lands by reading but what we learn by our ears eyes noses and mouths is learned far more quickly and is more deeply impressed upon us we cannot all visit and learn for ourselves the conditions of the heathen but we can all read and learn in that way he also spoke of the morals of china in particu lar saying that its port towns are regular hot beds of iniquity he stated that it is above all things necessary and important that the higher class of chinese be reached for they are virtually the rulers of the country he made mention of the interest ing and amusing fact that the only word in the chinese language he could understand on first hearing was lehigh he says lehigh holds a high place in their imagina tions a college meeting was held in the physical laboratory friday october 16 coach newton and captain farabaugh were to have addressed the meeting but owing to unavoidable circumstances both had to be absent in the absence of these gentlemen several seniors took up the matter to be discmsed for the last few weeks many of the foot ball candidates have been re oorting irregularly and as a result there was a poor scrub president bailey of the senior class set this matter before the meeting and others reinforced his remarks as a result of the meeting and the in terest aroused several new and promising men have reported for practice butler of last year's team who up to this time has found it in convenient to join the team in its work is now out once more and will greatly strengthen the team back of the line cheering practice will be held three nights a week namely tues day thursday and friday every body should turn out and get their voice in shape at the rehearsals for games no 7
