college notes college notes the carlisle indian industrial school has now 1025 students en rolled and more desirous of being admitted snappy practice wednesday afternoon on wednesday afternoon the foot ball practice showed improve ment in many respects over what has been usual this fall in the first place plenty of men reported there being in all over forty several new men being in the squad and a farabaugh and butler appeared in uniform after forty-five minutes of squad practice the varsity lined up against the scrub with some difficulty the varsity pushed the scrub down the field and finally scored a touch down to test the defensive power of the varsity the scrub was given the ball on the ten yard line and they in turn pushed the ball over the line the men played snappy ball on both sides there was little fumbling and the practice seems to speak well for a fast game with vilianova on saturday the line-up : varsity , . position scrub tfrush l e duncan orth l t gott barnard c enke strauss r g vanßeenen johnson r t a farabaugh herman r £. dornin l farabaugh q b pentz torrey r h b senior bailey : , ■1 h b johnston landefelt f b kirk musical club meeting a meeting of all the musical clubs will be held at saucon hall satur day at 2 p m ' . leaders will.jbe elected at this meeting -•■: ■■■the clubs will most likely go to washington and give a joint concert with georgetown on thanksgiving and it is therefore necessary for all men who can play any instrument or sing to be at this meeting in proportion to the student en rollment john hookins university has one instructor to every four students yale one to nine col umbia harvard northwestern and pennsylvania one in ten princeton one in thirteen michi gan one to fourteen and missouri and wisconsin one to fifteen the dairy department of the uni versity of wisconsin supplies the citizens of madison with 8000 pounds of milk and butter daily the faculty of harvard have taken determined measures to eradicate thieving among the un dergraduates to swipe a sign of some description has now be come an essential part of the stu dent life many of the men would rather give up a year's allowance than hand over the signs which they have collected it is of interest to note that at the university of california senior class control is in vogue the faculty have intrusted all college property to their protection and the seniors will undertake to act as advisers to lower classmen to prevent the de struction of the university prop erty used by any class for the pur pose of class meetings etc notice the special offer of a reduced subscription price for the brown and white that was made last year is again presented al though the regular subscrip tion price is 2.00 a year if payment is made before novem ber 1 it will be reduced to 1.50 everyone should avail himself of this offer and by settling be fore that date save the difference many students have to work their way through either in part or entirely many a time they be come discouraged they have to sacrifice many things but in the end usually come out better equipped for life's work than those who have plenty of spending money and don't know how to spend it habits of industry and frugality make for success while there is no virtue in poverty itself yet the effort necessary to overcome obstacles is of great value it explains why the poor boy of yesterday is the prosperous man of to-morrow wanted the honor system of exami nations is now in vogue at prince ton williams and the university of virginia boston tech is now about to give it a trial all competitors for the brown and white board should write an assumed pen-name on an envel ope containing a card with their real name and should iron the en velope in the letter box in the door of the brown and white room this door is on the rear side of christmas hall and faces packer avenue ' ait articles in " competi tion should go there too these may be on any subject of interest to the college and should be from one hun dred to one hundred and fifty lon g several bright young men to do about five hours work a week for particulars inquire between 5 and 7 p m oct 3 to 9 at 134 broad st betelehem pa first meeting of the year the opening meeting of the forum was held tuesday evening in the foirurm rooms in saucon hall the forum was primarily a literary and debating society but for the last few years it has been conducted almost entirely as a de bating society president weston desires during this year to give the literary side a little more emphasis than it has been receiving the debate will be conducted in the same manner as formerly and will as formerly follow political and economic lines the object of the debates is to inform ana in struct and to develop in the mem bers of the forum a readiness to take part in discussions of almost any kind the topics for debate are ;
