in the early part of the week it was seen that the accommodations were not nearly sufficient and through the untiring efforts of prof thornburg carpenters were set to work construct ing new grand stands and bleachers so that the entire field was surrounded and still there were many hundreds who stood not to mention the throngs which blackened shanty hill and the higher positions of the campus the mad rush for reserved seats on the first day of the sale is now too old a story to dwell upon we now smile at the day when we wondered if the north stand would ever be filled the seats left there a few hours after the sale opened would not have held what we didn't do to lafayette lehigh feild presented a sight such as has never been seen here before ten thousand spectators gathered around the field to witness the long anticipated struggle between the old rivals there were lafayette rooters and lehigh rooters galore old grads ex's students preps friends and backers for both teams together with others drawn to south bethlehem by the widespread fame of the lehigh lafayette game who coming merely to see the contest found themselves so enveiled by contagious enthusiasm that they soon picked favorites and cheered as well as the most enthusias tic of the crowd once more the highest ambition of lehigh has been fulfilled lafayette the mighty lafayette has been de feated yet going down with every inch disputed fighting bitterly des perately to the end the south stand from this time the yelling was continuous swelling to a mighty roar when the opposing teams trotted on to the field and went through preliminary practice although the game was scheduled for 2.30 it was a quarter of three be fore the referee's whistle blew for the teams to line-up capt farabaugh won the toss and chose to defend the eastern goal scammel kicked off to waters who fumbled but then fell on the ball line plunging by andy but ler and waters advanced the ball 21 yards but a disastrous fumble placed the ball in lafayette's possession the sturdy line bucking up to this point had sent a thrill of joy to every loyal lehigh heart and a spasm of dismay chilled every lafayette rooter for it demonstrated that barring ac cidents lehigh must win on the next two downs lafayette gained 4 yards and going out of bounds on the last rush upset a water bucket and a kodak fiend much to the discomfiture of both spectators and players the ball was then given to ernst who circled the left end for eight yards slowly but surely the ball was advanced until the 20-yard line was reached and then lafayette might as well have butted a stone wall for they could not gain an inch and so had to surrender the ball le high then renewed her smashing tac tics with andy and butler as the chief aggressors butler ploughed through centre for five yards followed by andy with 15 more butler was again called upon and a pretty 20-yard run through left tackle was the result andy's run of 10 yards around right end and torrey's brilliant dash for 17 yards through left tackle placed l lie ball within the 25 yard line but ler again demonstrated his ground gaining ability by gaining 16 yards in two rushes at this point lafayette's defense became more stubborn and lehigh was compelled on several oc casions to use 3 downs to gain the necessary 5 yards butler was at this point disquali lied as the umpire decided that the pummeling which he gave ernst was unfair judging from the size of the opponent's slowly but surely the ball advanced and then it was given to andy break ing loose from all interference he dashed for the goal with half the la fayette team after him but he eluded them all and scored lehigh's first touchdown the rousing cheers which greeted this event sent dismay to the lafay ette sympathizer and seemed to pre sage a much larger score a neat goal added another point to the score andy kicked off to van atta who advanced the ball 20 yards before he was downed in seven plays lafayette could gain but 16 yards and so were forced to kick le high was then treated to a surprise party for she was unable to gain the requisite 5 yards and so surrendered the ball for the first time on downs from the 40 yard line lafayette then started her irresistable march for the goal line slowly but surely they advanced and their root ers were calling clamorously for a touchdown after 12 plays the ball was within 5 yards of the much cov eted line but lehigh's sudden brace stopped them in the nick of time and the apprehension for the time was over lehigh again resumed her line plunging and started her journey for the far away goal posts six plays netted 17 yards but then a kick was necessary the ball was carried from the 50 to the 20 yard line by lafay ette and then it was given to ernst who broke through left tackle for 20 yards and a touchdown the goal was kicked mid the great enthusiasm of the lafayette rooters and many of them prophesied better things to come fair ladies and elderly men so forgot their dignity as to cheer loudly and to clap vigorously the half then ended with the score a tie and the ball in lafayette's possesion on her own 40-yard line second half a good heart to heart talk by dr newton between the halves seemed to be very profitable for the lehigh men went into the battle as a bull dog let loose from the lashes andy kicked off but the ball was fumbled and came rolling back right into the arms of a lehigh player lehigh's gains by this time were not so large as lafayette had about sized up her style of attack the ball was slowly worked to the eight-yard line the third down showed little advancement and then andy determined on a kick from placement it was passed back to the 23-yard line but the ball flevr wide of the goal posts the ball was punted out from the 25-yard line and again the incessant hammering began it was this time carried to the 10-yard line and again lafayette took a decided brace andy decided then upon another place kick from the 20-yard line the angle was somewhat difficult but this time the ball missed the bar by only a foot again lafayette punted out and the ball was advanced to the 40-yard line before the lehigh player was downed two more first downs were made and then things seemed to come to a standstill andy for a short time was undecided whether he should try a third kick from placement but finally determined on a quarterback kick lew kicked the ball well to the right and andy was after it like a deer stitzer had about 5 yards start on him but andy overcame the lead and caught the ball on the 16-yard line stitzer was however close on him and finally downed him on the 6-yard line the lusty cheering of lehigh's student body only spurred the team on to greater exertions and this time they determined to do or die lafay ette was as equally determined and during no other part of the game did she put up a better defense . two fierce plunges netted 4 yards and then torrey went
