many poems read con on page 4 col 4 very early upper classmen sophomores and even freshmen began to arrive with fair maid ens clinging to their brawny arms many an opportunity was offered for the men to pull sir walter raleigh's stunt in which he put down his coat in order to keep her feet dry and thus gained favor in her eyes from the number of fur coats it seems that something must be done to preserve our fur bearing animals or like the great american buffalo they will soon become extinct the coats were wonderful but the the annual football classic between lehigh and muhlen berg saturday afternoon as sumed more closely the appear ances of a game of water-polo than a football contest enthu siasm was running high in the stands which were packed to ca pacity although the condition ot the stands was such that it pre vented anyone from having a stroke due to overheating news papers and slickers sold at a premium and a haberdasher would have made a fortune sell ing boots and galoshes which would have kept the oxfords and slippers dry for the tea dance after the duel con on page 3 col 4 muhlenberg had not enjoyed a victory over lehigh since 1921 but it was apparent before the game was five minutes old that every visiting player was fight ing with the determination and confidence of victory lehigh on the other hand did not display any spirit at all until the open ing of the second half when for a few minutes the fighting atti tude so consistently shown at rutgers a week ago was reviv ed in such a spirit the lehigh backs pressed relentlessly against the muhlenberg line and advanced the ball more than sixty yards before a fumble due to slippery footing gave muhlenberg the pig-skin but lehigh was still fighting its a fighting stubborn power ful muhlenberg college eleven afternoon buried le high's hopes of a no-defeat sea son deep in the mud which lay inches thick upon taylor field and in which even cleats failed to insure certain footing yet however much lehigh support ers may dislike the fact it is the truth that the brown and white players were not on a par with the speedy determined cardinal and grey team of allentown enthusiasm high lehigh's line weak saturday's game has many interesting side lights first victory for muhlenberg over lehigh since 1 92 1 . presented strong backfield mud soaked field mars brilliance of grid battle brown and white gridders bow to muhlenberg team pricej five cents the first college lecture of the fall term was held last thurs day morning at eleven o'clock in the south side junior high school when dr w m ells worth spoke to the students of lehigh on the new poetry dr ellsworth who has spoken at various colleges and schools all over the country spoke at lehigh last year and was so well received and enjoyed that the faculty committee on lec tures secured his services for the opening lecture of the cur rent year professor stoughton introduced the speaker and urg ed the students to open their minds to the beauty of the poet ry which dr ellsworth was about to present dr ellsworth opened his lec ture by saying that practically everybody at some time in their life has tried to write poetry al though only about one in every five million write the kind of poetry that people want to read he mentioned the fact that free verse was becoming more pop ular at the present time due to its capable handling by contem porary poets although whit man crane blake and others had used it earlier without much success he then read some selections con on page 4 col 3 tea dance a success in spite of rain the mechanical engineers held their first meeting of the year in the physics lecture room on thursday evening the president thomas f rey nolds called the meeting to or der promptly at eight o'clock he outlined the work of the so ciety and told of the relation oi the lehigh branch of the me chanical engineers to the am erican society of mechanical engineers he also delivered a short address of welcome to the industrial engineers and to the freshmen mechanicals and told them that the society belonged to them as much as it did to the upper-classmen and it was up to them to see that it was a success a short business meet ing followed this address and then prof f v larkin head of the department of mechani cal engineering made a short speech outlining the history growth and purpose of the so ciety and setting forth the val ue of membership in such on or ganization con on page 4 col 3 the president then introduced the speaker of the evening mr george c lilly superintendent of the heat treatment depart ment of the bethlehem steel co he delivered as his address the metallurgy and heat resume ofgames by lehigh's opponents charles m prior succumbs to fatal injury on sunday morning after a heroic fight for life memorial services held yesterday was cheerful and conscious up until last few min utes of life impressive services mark fin al tribute of students and friends to deceased in memoriam frosh elect y m c a cabinet members hill and dalers lose to cornell on slippery course fred trafford speaks to class of 29 and urges more class spirit kappa alpha lodge has the honors in starting house party week-end his life reviewed many floral tributes melted snow makes course a bog — aitken runs a splen did rac many present the teams which lehigh will play in the near fu ture all won their games saturday lafayette strong houghton wins con on page 4 col 3 lehigh's coming opponents all won their games on satur day lafayette easily defeated st bonaventure at easton al though the visitors did some fine playing they were not able to hold the lafayette line le high's ancient rivals started the game by scoring after a straight drive of 65 yards they scored again in the first period then failed to drive the ball across again until the third quarter when moore caught a pass and ran the ball to the 6 yard line before he was stopped here st bonaventure put up a strong resistance and it re quired four rushes to carry the house party started off fri day afternoon with all the glory that is its due in spite of the ef forts of the weatherman to step in there was a tea dance at the kappa alpha lodge that did the honors of starting the most successful house party in years con on page 4 col 6 cakes and cider were served and the entire first floor of the the opening strains of music were heard at four o'clock when the london criterions began to strut their stuff for the dance which was to begin the activities of the week-end a goodly crowd was there and it seemed that any one in college could have been successfully paged beautiful girls from everybody's home town and the sisters and prom trotters did their best to get acquainted with lehigh everybody being in high spirits caused the time to pass too quick ly and before anyone realized it dinner demanded attention wrestling practice all men out for wrestling will report to coach sheridan in the wrestling room at 4 p m on tuesday thursday and friday of each week ; af ter thanksgiving however all candidates whether trying for the frosh or the varsity team will report every after noon the entire student body to gether with the faculty friends and a large number of towns people assembled in the univer sity chapel at eleven o'clock monday morning to pay their last respects to one of lehigh's respected and beloved sons charles malcolm prior the funeral services were conducted by the rev fred t trafford assisted by the rev d wilmot gateson the epis copal burial service was fol lowed throughout the ceremony the service was opened by a procession that was led by the rev trafford and the rev gateson followed by the pall-bearers bearing the silver grey casket readings from the episcopal funeral service were started by the rev trafford during the march down the aisle and continued by him from the altar con on page 2 col 5 the chapel itself was filled to overflowing by the many people gathered for the services and there were many who found it impossible to gain admittance the usual student seating ar rangement was followed out with the front right side of the chapel being reserved for the the brown and white har riers lost a hard fought race to the cornell hill and dale experts at ithaca on saturday by a 34 to 21 score in spite of the large margin of victory attained by the cornell runners the visitors put up a good fight but were finally forced to bow to the su periority of the red clad ath letes the light snow of friday had turned the muddy roads in to a veritable bog and this made the running very difficult and the footing extremely treacher ous especially on the down grades outside of the poor conditions under foot the day was ideal for a cross country race ridsdale of lehigh sus tained a fallen arch and was the only runner who suffered from the poor road conditions altho two cornell harriers failed to complete the route due to ex haustion houghton of the red and white team was the first to cross the finish line but he was given a real battle throughout the en tire race by aitken of lehigh who finished in second place con on page 4 col 6 notice seniors harwood frost 93 will present his recent publication engineering literature to seniors upon application at the alumni office a divine providence has removed from our midst our beloved and honored class m,a t c charles malcolm prior in silent sympathy we resign ourselves to the will of the creator in this untimely loss in the grief of his stricken parents and associates we the members of the student body of lehigh university express our deep and sincere sym pathy attesting our ven eration for the nobility of character and soul which he exemplified in life and in death to the memory of our de parted comrade and classmate who sacrificed himself on the altar of faithful service and loy al devotion who gave his all in strength and spirit that his life might add lustre to his alma mat er and of the one who gave himself for us we bow in reverence student body of lehigh university poor attendance the freshman class held its second meeting under its new staff of officers tuesday evening in drown hall the meeting was called by the president ted blood promptly at 7 30 after a few introductory remarks fred trafford was given the floor he rebuked the class for its poor showing bringing out the fact that only about 175 members of the class were pres ent a very poor representation for a class of approximately 575 students he also asked all those present to try to instill some spirit into the absent mem bers and to assure a perfect at tendance at the next meeting then he briefly outlined a plan for a series of tea-dances to be sponsored by the freshman class the admission fee would be nominal a good orchestra could be hired and arrange ments would be made to have some of the girls from b-thorpe present — altogether a plan which would insure all a good time after this short talk the pres ident again took the floor and stated the main reason for which the meeting had been cal led namely to elect members to the freshman cabinet the con on page 3 col 6 after fighting valiantly against overwhelming 1 odds for his life for the past two weeks charles m prior succumbed to the inevitable on sunday morn ing november ist at i!en-thirty o'clock in spite of the fact that he was given but five days as a limit to live by physicians after the fatal accident which occured five minutes before the end of the west virginia-wes leyan game on october 17 when he was tackled in running back a punt his indomitable spirit aided by a strong constitution kept him alive for slightly more than two weeks at the time of his death his parents bosey reiter and dr w l es,tes jr were at his bedside when he lost consciousness about 10:15 artificial respira tion and hypodermic needles were used in an effort to main tain life but it was soon found that no efforts of man could keep him alive the immediate cause of his death was given by the physi cians as pulmonary edema with questionable hypo-static pneu monia the former is an ac cumulation of pus and liquid in the lungs which finally
