the sophomore cotillion which was held at the eagle on friday evening last fully maintained the high standard set by these dances in previous years the large dining room of the old hostelry presented a most beautiful appearance the decorations con sisted of lehigh flags and palms the corner of the room which was devoted to the orchestra was one bank of large palms and completly hid the musicians from view the music was furnished by groman and was of the usual delightful character rendered by that orches tra the programmes deserve special mention being of a singularly pretty and unique design the cover was of light brown leather stamped with dark brown ink come ! joseph franklin merkle 84 died at his home at perkasie pa on november 26th 1903 he was graduated in the course in civil engineering at lehigh university and subsequently pursued a course in medicine at the university of pennsylvania from which he re ceived the degree of m d in 1894 after graduation from lehigh he was employed by the edison co at pittsburg he practiced medi cine at cressona llewellyn boyer town and perkasie he is survived by a widow and three sons college lecture numerals awarded y m c a dr w h tolman director of the american league for social service will lecture on friday morning december nth at 11.30 o'clock in the assembly hall of the physical laboratory on social studies in great britain france and italy the regular stated meeting of the philadelphia lehigh club will be held thursday dec io 1903 8.15 p m at the university club 15 10 walnut street prof mansfield m merriman and prof chas l doolittle will be the guests of the evening you are particularly requested to be present as they will have interesting lehigh news to tell us before the business meeting a club dinner will be served at 7 p m and it is hoped that you will join our distinguished guests the price will be 1.50 per plate should you desire to attend the dinner please inform d w patterson 810 harrison building of the same if you cannot possibly be present at the dinner make an effort to be on hand and hear what your former preceptors have to say at the busi ness meeting will you be at this meeting — dec 10th 1903 8 1 5 p m moriz bernstein secretary dr drown upon the request of the secretary of state of pennsyl vania has gone to butler to assist in the investigation of the water supply of that place the minstrel show saturday night was without doubt far above the average for college exhibitions of a similar nature and clearly sur passed any previous performance here at lehigh too much praise cannot be given to the managers having the production in charge nor to the men both in the cast and in the musical organisations who contributed largely of their time to the rehearsals necessary for the success of the entertainment there was quite a large and en thusiastic audience present which entered fully into the spirit of the occasion and heartily applauded the various turns as for the performance itself it was excellent in every way the jokes of the end men were particu larly funny and evoked consider able applause while one or two may have contained some person alities that is surely to be expected at an entertainment of this kind and it is to be hoped no offense was taken since none was meant the soloists were all good and the songs bright and catchy while the chorus work was strong and full of life the solos of the angle brothers with their quartet and octet choruses were exceptionally fine and the work of tracy and mendoza very enjoyable johnson and kirk got in some very clever steps during the chorus of their re pective songs deane and payne also sang in a very pleasing mann er and were loudly applauded after some excellent music by the college orchestra the second part of the program was opened by a medley of old plantation songs and melodies together with some more recent productions sung by the whole company this was one of the prettiest parts of the evening's program johnson and payne who made one of the hits last year gave a sketch in which they introduced a few songs one of which being about various members of the fac ulty they were heartily applaud ed the mandolin club under the leadership of herman played two selections very well indeed and promised to be a credit to the university when they take the pro posed southern trip later in the season continued on second page at the meeting of the athletic committee thursday night it was decided to put a lacrosse team into the field this season and a committee was appointed to make arrangements for securing a com petent coach a ruling was made to the effect that men making the varsity bas ket ball team be allowed to wear the official monogram l u b b class numerals were awarded secretary for pennsylvania ad dressed the y m c a meeting in christmas hall sunday evening on the subject the four transition periods of peter's life mr miller divided his subject into i acceptance 2 doubt 3 de dial ; 4 reacceptance and pointed out that many of our lives to-day are very similar in actions to peters he closed his talk with a strong o appeal for better and more manly living here at lehigh and said that he hoped the institution would take an enviable place in the religious just as she had in the intellectual world mr sheesley rendered the solo of the evening vol xl the brown and
