princeton has very encouraging orospects for a good track team this year candidates have been called cut and many promising men have reported the team however will be somewhat handicapped by the loss of robt games the crack hurdler and high jumper horton the pole vaulter captain of the team last year was the only man with any intercollegiate record lose by graduation - university lecture perm's foot ball plans have been formed and through it has not been announced it is generally expected that carl williams will be given an other chance the members of the 1903 foot ball team are much agi tated over the question of what the committee proposes to do concern ing the award of the varsity p to smith the star fullback it is an open secret that the members of the committee favor the award of this honor to the big fullback since the university athletic committee has exonerated him from all blame - president eliot of etarvard ad dressed a very enthusiastic audience at witherspoon hall philadelphia on saturday on the subject of a good urban school organization his talk was entirely devoid of elo quence but dealt entirely with facts presented in his usual forceful style h took all auditors by storm though there were many present who were educators of ability and renown the bible study institute con cerning which notice was given in cur last issue came to a very suc cussful conclusion sunday evening besides the representatives from lafayette muhlenberg and the mo ravian college also sent delegates thus making the institue a more re presentative body saturday afternoon the institute was called to order by pres ed monds of lehigh and was formally opened with a prayer by pres rob erts of the lafayette association mr kautz lehigh 05 then spoke on the need of daily bible study his remarks all tended to show that bible study is as essential for a man to-day as any other line of work and that a man cannot be called well educated without knowing some thing of the word of god he compared the average time spent upon study of the bible with that spent on various other subjects and led to the conclusion that most of us cannot understand the bible prop erly as we have only a child's view ol it he mentioned that a system ci ethics political economy law and poetry were all to be found in the ; bible such as are equalled in no other book of books of any age mr kautz ended his remarks with an appeal for daily bible study for every man in the institute mr johnston of lafayette next 1 presented the value of mission study he deplored the fact that college men as a whole know very little about missions and urged the : siudy if only for the means of hav ing a clear and definite idea for the purpose of defending the work against hose who are only too will ing to attack it he gave a good idea of the need of missionaries but lie wished to have the technical men chiefly see the necessity of being well informed on this subject ; mr cooper then closed the first session with a talk on the field and , how to work it he.spok of the awakening interest in bible study by college men allover the land and pointed out west point as dfic instance where in place ot twenty or twenty-five men a vear in bible study work they had over two hundred mr cooper told many interesting stories about frets that came under his observa tion as he travelled all over this land of ours he closed by throw ii;g the meeting open and inquiring for the agencies used in the different in his lecture on the early cartography of the new world to be delivered friday morning january 22 at the physical labora tory professor e l stevenson will exhibit a lantern slide of the fam-l ous waldseemuller map of 1507 the earliest map in existence bearing the name america this map was recently discovered in the archives of one of the ducal castles-pf prus sia and was exhibited for the first time in america on december 18th 1903 in an address by prof steven son before the national geographic cal society the map is nine fee long it is believed that waldsee muller printed 1000 copies of this map in 1507 but as it was a wall map all of the copies except this cne have been lost on thursday jan 7 boston tech held its annual indoor meet and resulted in a victory for the freshmen duffy of georgetown w ho holds the world's 100-yd dash record was present and gave an ex hibition dash continued on third page the regular meeting of the for ura was held thursday evening in the forum room saucon hall the attendance in spite of unfavorable conditions was larger than any meeting since the opening of col lege after a long and spirited discus sion it was decided that the forum send to franklin and marshall col lege literary society a challenge to a debate to be held here some time next term this is a very im portant debate and our boys will exert every effort to win last year franklin and marshall de feated our team plans for inter-class debates were then discussed the plan as pre l sented by president weston is as follows : the junior and senior classes each are to select teams which will hold one debate the sophomore and freshman classes are to hold a similar debate and the winners of these two separate con 1 tests are to hold the third debate the winners of which are to receive a banner which will be hung on the forum walls this plan cannot be : set into practice until after the franklin and marshall debate which will be some time in april if successful this should certainly be an interesting and instructive scheme and would help greatly in arousing a greater literary spirit among the fellows further business of the society was the acceptance of an amend ment to the constitution of the in tercollegiate oratorical union as proposed by gettysburg college this amendment excludes from the annual oratorical contest all female competitors fpn the last several years swarthmore has been sending one of the fair sex with the result that die prize has each time gone to swarthmore it is argued by get tysburg that he judges are not able to render a fair decision after several small matters were disposed of the debate of the even ing was held the question for dis cussion was : resolved that the attitude of the united states toward columbia since the revolt of pan ama has been justifiable ehlers 05 and lamke 07 spoke for the af firmative while sisson 05 evning in the physi cal laboratory the meeting was called to order by president orth and after the transaction of the business that was brought before the society the following papers were read from the proceedings of the american society of electrical engineers of which the society at lehigh is a branch the testing of electrical ap paratus for electrical strength was read by blume 05 how to bring high tension conductors into buildings mer vine 05 method of supplying electric cables for high voltage schaef ier 05 there were also two original papl ers read shive 04 gave an in teresting and practical discussion of overhead high tension dis tributing systems in suburban dis tricts seyfert 04 gave a re view of the test of the trolley line between allentown and philadel phia after the reading of the papers 1 : they were discussed in a very in teresting manner by professor franklin and mr regestein a delightful lunch was servedj and was much enjoyed by all pres tnt :■,
