the electrical engineering so ciety held its regular monthly meeting on wednesday evening when they were delightfully enter tained by president drown at his home on the campus the meet ing was very well attended paul cloke 05 read a paper on thawing of water pipes by elec tricity until the recent old fash ioned winter this unique method of overcoming the above common dis comfort of householders was un heard of the scheme is thoroughly successful , and was used very widely it is much more expeditious in its operation and does not neces sitate the excavations that it was be fore often unavoidable to make in order to reach the pipe mr h s b'alliet assistant en gineer of signals of the lehigh val ley railroad was present at he meet ing and gave an instructive talk on the automatic block system mr balliet showed how the signals were operated so that the engineers could know if there were a train on the block ahead he then gave a de scription of mechanisms of the sig nals and the electric circuit by which they are governed in conclusion he answered a number of questions asked by the members of the society about the block signal system after the reading of the papers a delightful hour was spent in a so cial way music both vocal and in strumental had been provided by dr drown and this together with the delicious refreshments were thoroughly enjoyed by the members of the society y m c a mr flildebrand and mr gardi ner both of whom are very promi nent in athletics at the university of pennsylvania will speak at he regular meeting of the y m c a 011 sunday evening m e meeting the regular monthly meeting of the mechanical engineering society was held in their room in williams hall last wednesday evening the meeting was called to order by president haller and the minutes of the preceeding meeting read after the routine business had been transacted the papers of the evening were read t s jones 05 was the first on the programme and took as his sub ject blast furnaces he dealt particularly with the mechanical problems in the construction and operation of blast furnaces the re cent mechanical improvements in construction being illustrated by sketches he also dwelt on the lat est methods for conveying and charging the more modern fur naces are operated from the ground the two bells being dropped by steam cylinders whose valves are worked by endless ropes leading to the man on the ground the charges re taken to the top of the furnace if a small car and there dumped au tomatically in conclusion he spoke on the economical arrangement of the stock yard mr d m sachs jr m e 02 spoke very interestingly to the so ciety on the results of the experi ments of the bethlehem steel com pany on segregation he showed that for a number of different kinds of ingots the amount of segregation of phosphorus silicon sulphur car bon and magnesium as compared by the heat test the amount of this segregation being enough in some cases to render the ingot un fit for mercantile purposes seg regation occurs practically not at all in the fluid compressed ingots c w lotz 06 read the last paper of the evening he spoke about steel wire and enumer ated in a clear and concise mannev the different processes employed in the production of this commodity the hot ingots are carted to the rolls where the first mill reduces them to long rods which are fed unto spools these spools are im mersed in dilute sulphuric acid to remove the scale and rust and are then washed in water and again in lime water which neutralizes the acid and lubricates them after this they are drawn cold this is ac complished by tapering the end an 1 drawing through a die a number of dies have to be used before the required cross section is obtained after the reading of the papers the usual delightful lunch was served and the posters raffled off interscholastic track meet to be held may 14 the annual interscholastic meet for 1904 will be held on lehigh field south bethlehem saturday may 14 meets of this kind have been held here for the past two 1 years and have been a great success on both occa sions last year nearly a hundred men participated in the different events ; this year fifteen shools with a total of over eighty men have al ready returned favorable answers and many more are still to be heard from temple college preparatory school won first place in the contest in 1902 and dickinson preparatory school last year as both of these are to be represented by strong teams again this year a very close contest is promised the events which will be contested are : 100 yard run 220 yards run 440 yards run half mile run one mile run one mile relay four men 120 yards hurdle 3ft 6 in 220 yards hurdle 2 ft 6 in running broad jump running high jump putting 12 lb shot throwing 12 lb hammer pole vault a silk banner will be presented t j the school scoring the greaetst num ber of points ; gold silver and bronze die meatls will be given as first second and third prizes in each event every convenience in the way of training quarters will be provided for competing teams besides suit able entertainment will be provided for visiting teams at the chapter houses of the various fraternities of the university the meet an entertainment and feed will be given the compet ing teams at the university gymna sium as all the records made last year were very credible it is hoped that the different preparatory schools will again show their interest by sending their best possible teams to this meet any one desiring any further information on the subject may obtain it by applying to dr davis of the department of physi cal culture the base ball team practiced on the athletic field for the first time last wednesday on saturday evening there will be held in the gymnasium an l contest the l to be awarded to the best all around gymnast the programme will consist of the six standard events as pre scribed by the intercollegiate asso ciation of amateur gymnasts the programme and entries will be as follows : horizontal bar dudley evans brown side horse mcdevitt krause stauffer mervine parallel bars moore evans mervine brown isert club swinging seipt stauffer hesse flying rings moore krause brown scott tumbling dudley krause isert evans each man will be graded for his work on each piece of apparatus the sum toal of his several grades will be taken as his final mark the man scoring the highest number of points will be awarded an l from the scores made by several members of the team in the haver ford and rutgers meets the contest on saturday promises to be very in teresting and the final scores very close proceeding the contest the fresh men will give an exhibition wand drill followed by pyramids tli ere has recently been estab lished in armour institute of tech nology chicago a regular course in ire protection engineering it will train men to recognize the condi necessary and unavoidable fire hazard and to apply all known safeguards armour institute is the first technical college to undertake this kind of work uck ex-os wn o is now holding a position in harrisburg mvas in bethlehem last week report denied in the philadelphia press ot march 21 appeared an article in which it was announced that r k waters lehigh's foot ball captain for 1904 had gone to his home suffering from a general break down and that it is doubtful if he will be in condition to return to co-liege next year the report is en tirely untrue captain waters when last heard from was in the best of health and fully intended to re-enter the university next fall the brown and white vol xl no 40 lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday march 25 1904 gym l contest e e meeting president drown entertains
