continued on third page continued on fourth page college lecture comparison of german and american technical schools dr pritchett president of the massachusetts institute of tech nology was the lecturer last fri day morning and his remarks upon a comparison of the technical schools of germany and those of the united states were highly in teresting and instructive through bis position as president of one of the largest technical schools of this country and through the care ful study he has made of similar institutions abroad dr pritchett is certainly well qualified to make such a comparison and his lecture was greatly appreciated by all who card it the lecturer began his address by stating that institutes of learn ing are all more or less connected especially those of a technical na ture there are many points of likeness and points of dissimilarity between technical learning here and abroad in paris universities and technical schools are rigidly separated furthermore the tech nical schools are also divided just as rigidly each branch of art and technique has its own school this is the extreme of differentiation in germany also there is a sharp ciion the universities and technical schools are separate but all branches of technique are brought into the same school i c in america however we have all possible variations some of our universities such as johns hopkins have no technical branches others such as lehigh cornell and the great state uni versities in the west embody all both classics and applied sciences while some like massachusetts in stitute of technology have nothing but technology again some are on the order of the paris schools for instance stevens is purely me ical while rensaleer offers only civil engineering in germany the government has charge of all educational work whether it be preparatory or in the universities and technical schools as a result the german institutions are much more democratic in gov ernment than are ours they have no autocratic president the pro fessors in each faculty elect their own president or director as he is cpiiph the student body in turn practically elects their own profes lacrosse lehigh defeated by johns hopkins those who were fortunate enough to witness the game on sat urday between lehigh and johns hopkins were rewarded by seeing the best game of lacrosse nlayed on lehigh field this season the day was warm and cloudy but was al most ideal for lacrosse from start to finish both teams played their best possible and not withstanding the fact that the score was one sided the game was very interest ing promptly at 3.1 ■; the game was begun and before lehigh realized what was happening johns hopkins had landed a goal this was quickly repeated and within the first five minutes the visitors had totaled three goals from the start it was seen that lehigh was out-classed in tipping and team work it began to look very much as if lei would suffer a shut out in the first half but by some timely work on the part of de schweinitz lueders and wrightson she was enabled to score the first half ended with the score 8 to 1 in favor of johns hopkins lehigh started out in the second half with a determination to do their best work to keep down the score of their opponents and at the same time to raise their own they were not however able to stop johns hopkins though they made work harder for their points with the game almost over and the score 12-1 estes got the ball and ran di rectly through johns hopkins de fense for a goal lehigh scored her third and last time on a pass from de schweinitz to estes to lue ders it would be hard to name any man on the johns hopkins team who excelled in good playing for their team worked as a unit and played a clean consistent and sci entific game for lehigh carlock deserves especial mention for the way in which he time and again blocked the throws of the johns hopkins players only to have the ball batted back again on account of lehigh's poor showing on the defensive flowever it must be said that our men put up as good a game as we could expect though it sometimes seemed as our coach said that lehigh was playing the reputaion of the johns hopkins team not the team itself the line up and score follows : a meeting of the forum will ' held in saucon hall on tuesday evening at which the following programme will be given : debate resolved that the pres idential term should be lengthened to six years negative gilmore 06 mawhinney 06 affirmative minn 07 gilmore 07 resume national affairs woodring 07 resume of foreign affairs swopc continued on third page the brown and white south bethlehem pa monday may 9 1904 lehigh university calendar tuesday may 10 — at 7.30 p m forum meeting in saucon ! all wednesday may 11 — at 3.00 p m base ball game on le high field lehigh vs lafayette at 7.45 p m m e meeting at dr drowns friday may 13 — lacrosse game lehigh vs flobart on lehigh field saturday may 14 — base bali game at villanova lehigh vs villanova interscholastic track meet high field y m c a meeting the meeting of the christian as sociation in christmas hall sun day evening was addressed by mr rondthaler of bethlehem mr rondthaler is a graduate of the university of north carolina of the class of 93 fie spoke on t > temptations of christ and consid ered the subject from the point of view of how christ overcame the attack of satan in our battle with temptation said he self-will environment and inherited tendencies doubtless play a large part but satan cares nothing for these what he is afraid of however is the word of god the temptation of adam and eve and that of christ were wonder fully similar the former did not use the passage of scripture god had given them and hence yielded christ won back the victory by three sentences in conclusion we use the word of god in overcoming temptation too infrequently such a verse as thou god seest me though only thought will help to win the vic tory there is no way in which we can more fully honor the word of god than in using it to defend ourselves messrs gaum and church ren dered a violin duet which was thor oughly appreciated by all meeting of the forum athletic committee meeting field house to be built this summer at the regular monthly meeting of the athletic committee last thursday evening a resolution was adopted and measures passed for the erection of a cage and field house on lehigh field a com mittee consisting of prof thorn berg and messrs foering and johnson was chosen to have entire charge of the drawing up of plans and the construction of the build ings work is to be begun im mediately after college closes this summer and it is expected that the field house will be ready and equipped by the opening of the foot ball season no definite plans have as yet been drawn up but from the rough estimate submitted it is purposed to have the cage built to cover a space of about 60x120 while the field house will consist of four rooms each equipped with lockers and shower baths one room to be set aside for the use of visit ing teams at a previous meeting the mono gram l u b b t was awarded to the basket hall team but at that time no provisions were made as to the number of games in which a man must play before being en titled to the monogram it was decided to grant the privilege of wearing the monogram to those men who play in at least three games accordingly monograms were awarded to this year's team as follows : pfahler beggs berg powell farabaugh the elections of van duyne and stauffer assistant managers of the basket ball and gym teams re spectively were ratified as was also tion of hayes 05 to the captaincy of the track team manager saffold's report on eames scheduled was then dis cussed and ratified the following complete schedule was approved sept 24th albright college south bethlehem sept 28th balto med college south bethlehem oct ist manhattan south beth lehem oct sth swarthmore swarth more pa no 49 vol xi
