the crisp cool weather that we ! have been having for the last week or ten days has made the conditions perfect for foot ball and the var , sity squad has been out for sig \ nal practice and a line up against the scrub every afternoon the strict training and constant practice have put the men in fine j fettle and the plays are run off with a vim and dash that should ( have telling effect in the coming games the men are taking great interest in their work and under dr newton's coaching the team is rapidly developing its offensive and defensive play and strengthening its weaker points so that if our next opponent would save herself from a 1 score like that rolled up against rutgers she will have to get a hustle the size of the foot ball squad leaves much to be desired but such as it is is of good quality in the line tips between the varsity and the scrub dr newotn has been playing the varsity backs behind the scrub line and the scrub backs behind the varsity line this ar rangement evens up matters to a great extent and the line-ups are more fierce and exciting than are many games catain farabaugh is out of the game at present but is on the field coaching every afternoon and will be all right by next saturday when the team plays new york univer sity here with him back in the game and with our costly fumbling cut out there is no reason in the world why the team that tied the middies should not give the next comers a larger dose from the same spoon the men are coming in fine trim epitome awards for literary work first prize 5.00 second prize 3.00 third prize an epitome for artistic work first prize 5-oo second prize 3.00 third prize an epitome pay your browx and white subscription association notes professor a g rau lehigh 88 will speak on sub-consciousness at the y m c a meeting sunday evening at 6.15 mr a e greene will sing professor stewardson's bible class meets sunday for the first time at 4.15 p.m at the associations rooms it is hoped that a great number of men especially upper classmen will take up this work with prof stewardson the freshman banquet on wed nesday night at the sun inn re sulted in one of the most lively en counters between sophomores and freshmen in the annals of lehigh university shortly after noon the sophomores became aware of the state of affairs and soon had a large delegation stationed in front of the sun inn but not before some sixty-five freshmen were safely lodged with in the hotel the pros pects for a successful banquent seemed very bright and the fresh men had begun to congratulate themselves upon their tact and in genuity the sophomores on the outside indulged in the usual hanging around and chasing those freshmen who had not succeeded in gaining entrance to the hotel and managed to catch six or eight of them who were kept under strict guard awaiting the half-dress parade everything pointed to the customary evening of eggthrowing and howling punctuated now and then by a lively chase an arrest or two and perhaps a few rounds be tween the sophomores and town boys shortly after eight o'clock the freshmen entered the banquet hall and for a while enjoyed the start of a sumptuous repast most of the toasts were proposed by the toastmaster h pi wright and responded to they were ;
