vol x comunication plea for steady col lege spirit lively practice on wednesday foot ball practice the crisp cool air of wednesday was just right for a good foot ball j practice and quite a large squad \ turned out the cool weather however was not so much appreci ated by the rest of the students j and as a result the bleachers were not overcrowded two teams were picked and given a signal practice both of j the teams were slow in giving the [ signals and in getting off the two teams were then lined up the varsity kicked off the scrub rushed the ball several times then lost it on a fumble on their own forty-five-yard line the varsity quickly took the ball down the field by line plunges for a touch j down the scrub was then given the ball on the varsity's ten-yard line for about fifteen plays they tried to get it over but failed the varsity then gained possession of the ball and by means of more line rushes had soon scored another touchdown the scrub was again given the ball on the varsity's five yard line and tried to put it back of the goal posts but were steadily forced back by the varsity when the varsity was again given the ball they soon made another touch down after which the line-up was stopped and the scrub men sent to the gymnasium the varsity and subs were kept on the field for a short signal practice the play throughout was too slow both as regards giving signals and getting off after the signals were given following is the line-up : varsity position scrub brush sinn l e buck geare l t edmunds waters l g mccleary barnard c euke fisher strauss r g marks galvin r t funk dornin gerhard r e rice l farabaugh dornin q b rcot smartt a farabaugh i v . h b macfarland watson lorry r h b pyne fuller f b adams calendar thursday oct 30 — at 4 p m foot ball practice on lehigh field friday oct 31 — foot ball team leaves for schenectady saturday nov . 1 — at 3 p m foot ball game lehigh vs union at schenectady sunday nov 2 — at 9.15 a m bible class study in christmas hall at 415 p m professor stew ardson's bible class in associa tion reading room at 6.15 p m meeting of young men's christian association in christmas hall monday nov 3 — at 4 p ivl foot ball practice on lehigh field at 7.30 p m meeting arcadia club tuesday nov 4 — at 4 p ivl foot ball practice on lehigh field wednesday nov 5 — at 4 p m foot ball practice on lehigh field at 7 p m meeting of mustard and cheese at psi upsilon house a meeting of the forum was held tuesday october 28 and from that date on meetings will be held every alternate tuesday these meetings will always be announced on the society's bulletin board in packer hall association meeting the subject for the young men's christian association meeting sun day evening will be college temp tations this will be a student's meeting led by mr carrier vocal solo by mr caum on tuesday evening the forum held an interesting and well at tended meeting the meeting was called to order by president good win after the roll call and read ■ing of the minutes the men who had been nominated at the preced ing meeting were voted into the so ciety and the following new men were nominated : moore 06 and stauffer 06 the motion was made and carried that the president ap point a committee to consider the advisibility of getting a new cut for the epitome ; gilmore 03 ; heck 03 and merriman 05 were ap pointed a letter from the mora vian college relative to the series of debates to be held thb winter was read to the society the debate was then begun upon the subject resolved that the demand made by the united mine workers of america for recognition should have been granted by the operators " the affirmative speakers were felix 03 and benedict 05 and the negative bruner 03 and morgan 04 the debaters showed a careful prepara tion of their subject and presented their arguments in an interesting form the judges doc drown prof thayer and mr emery gave their decision in favor of the nega tive after the debate the re sume of foreign affairs was given by kuryla 05 the election for vice president was then held and resulted in the choice of van sickle 03 the president appointed mar tin 05 to fill the vacancy on the programme committee ■and mor gan 03 on the moravian debate committee the program for the next meeting was read by wolcott 03 chairman of the program com mittee after a general discussion of the subject of debate the meeting adjourned new song we publish below a song which was received too late for publica tion in the brown and white song book you are urged to cut this out and put it in your song book as it is a song which will be used throughout the season there is still room for some good new songs and we would be glad to sent to us one de publish any any continued on third page editor of brown and white the entire college has noted with a feeling of pride the splendid dis play of college spirit at the foot ball practice and the smoker on friday and the game on saturday it has always been a great trouble in the past to prolong these bursts of spasmodic enthusiasm into exhibi tions of true college spirit there seems to be some danger of drift ing back into this old rut and the college should make a serious effort to prevent it how can anyone ex pect a man to report regularly for practice if the first chilly day is go ing to scare away almost every root er wednesday afternoon was a day to test the college spirit of any man there were about thirty of the old stand-bys out to root for the team this is not as it should be there is a remedy for this and one which will not require any terrible sacrifice from anyone if every man in college will make it a busi ness to be at the field three times a week there will be over three hun dred men there every day this al lows two cuts a week for men who need that time for work there are but five weeks of the season left so no one man will have more than fif teen practices to attend unless he is willing to make the further sacri fice i myself have not attended practices regularly but from now on 1 am going to attend at least three a week and want to see five hundred more men register with themselves the same resolution do it just to convince yourself that you know what college spirit means senior mechanical engineer ing society the first meeting of the year of the mechanical engineering society was held on wednesday evening in the physical laboratory a large number of the senior junior and sophomore students in mechanical engineering were present the lat ter being admitted to membership at this meeting myers 03 president of the so ciety made an opening address in which the proposed work of the so ciety for the coming year was out lined following the business meet ing curtis 03 read an interesting paper on the use of furnace continued on third page epitome awards there will be no meeting of the glee club this week for literary work first prize 5-00 second prize #_ _ 00 third prize an epitome for artistic work first priz e 5.00 second prize o oo third prize an epitome bible class by professor stewardson twenty-two men met with pro fessor stewardson last sunday in his first lecture on the old testa ment from the standpoint of higher criticism all who were present felt well repaid for the effort made to be on hand a great many others should take advantage of securing such valuable help in old testament study the class meets in the as sociation reading room from 4.15 to 5 o'clock sunday afternoon the brown and white notice notice south bethlehem pa thursday october 30 1%02 forum meeting another successful meeting no 11
