the dinner is open to all the students being especially urged to attend it has been hinted that the evening is to be enliven ed by several surprises it is a certainty that anyone who at tends will evening october 17 the alumni of lehigh univ ersity will return to their alma mater once again to attend an alumni supper which will be held at the hotel bethlehem at 7:00 p m the dinner is to be a testimonial dinner to a mem ber of the class of 95 a true friend of every student in le high the man who gives the finest fighting spirit talks that we have ever had the pleasure of hearing before the important athletic events the man who knows more about the history of lehigh athletics than any other bar none — okey a fine program has been ar ranged among the speakers are : president richards mr w c dickerman a members of the class of 96 who is now presi dent of the american car and at last the dream of the stu dent body has become an assur ed event for on friday satur day and sunday oct 30 31 and nov 1 house-party will again pervade the lehigh campus rumor has had it so for many weeks and now that dean mc conn has vouched for the action of the faculty at the meeting to be held next monday the rumor has become a reality beginning at noon friday oc tober 30 with the arrival of the first girl until noon on sunday november 1 when house-party is officially over the side of old south mountain will be the scene of one of the biggest events of college life none of the under-classmen now in col lege have experienced a house party at lehigh for the last one was held in november 1923 en action of the faculty they were discontinued indefinitely but are again in vogue at a meeting held oct 12 a representative of the arcadia the inter-fraternity council sophomore cotillion and the freshman class were present and it was decided that due to jthe slowness of the freshman class in organizing and also due to the fact that the members of the 1925 cotillion club have net as yet been elected there would be no official representatives of these two classes and all busi ness pertaining to the dances run by their committees will be | turned over to clyde davis un til these second annual fall symposium on chemical engineering by the lehigh valley section of the american chemical society it was held in the chandler chem ical laboratory under the able direction of members of the le igh chemistry department fa culty the committe consisted of j s long chairman g c beck vice-chairman a a die fenderfer councilor and d s chamberlain secretary - treas urer the symposium consisted of a morning session and an after noon session while between the two an appetizing luncheon was served the midday recess was of sufficient duration to allow the visitors to inspect the le aigh campus and the various ouildings ten interesting papers were read by men who are famous throughout the country for their contributions to science in gen eral and to chemistry in par ticular the guest register of the symposium shows that while the majority in attendance were from the lehigh valley there were many visitors from more distant sections of the country the morning session under the chairmanship of dr eugene bingham of lafayette opened with a prayer by dr c r rich ards on research in industry the paper dealt with the great value and application of con structive scientific research to modern industry it stressed particularly the recent develop ment of research as applied to industry it predicted a tremen dous future of good to the world con on page 2 col 4 gulick wants frosh divers for team in one of the most important intersectional grapples of the day lehigh entertains west virginia wesleyan on taylor field tomorrow this game will be the first of a series of hard contests which will determine the mettle of lehigh's 1925 grid iron machine to the highest pos sible degree last year bob higgins for mer perm state luminary step ped out to fame in the role of coach when he brought the west virginia methodists thru one of the most brilliant sea sons in the history of the insti tution wesleyan this year is coached by cecil ross former quarterback who turned out the state scholastic championship team of west virginia last fall rose is a product of bob hig gins the latter leaving west virginia to serve in the same capacity at washington univer teity when higgins resigned at wesleyan last year ross in his early twenties and one of the youngest collegiate mentors m the country stepped into the shoes of his former tutor and now heads an alumni coaching system the bob cats will arrive about two o'clock this afternoon with a fairly large squad it is expected that they will want to look over the scene of tomor row's fray and provisions have been made for their doing this without molestation the southerners come here a known quantity every one has read of the sensational upsets caused by this team last year a team that could upset the dope on syracuse and finally wallop the navy is a team that cer tainly deserves the utmost con sideration that is what west con on page 4 col 2 near the close of the spring term of college last year a new honorary fraternity was estab lished at lehigh when the le high xi chapter of omicron delta kappa a national honor ary fraternity was installed here the purpose of this fraternity is two-fold first it serves as a reward for a man who has done outstanding work and proved himself a leader in one of the five branches of collegiate acti vity — scholarship athletics so cial leadership non-athletic ac tivities other than publications and publications the second purpose is to serve as a connect ing link between students alum ni and faculty herein all ques tions which concern all three of these bodies will be thoroughly discussed and some definite con clusion attained the constitution provides for his latter purpose since its membership includes a maxi mum of four faculty members and four alumni members this fraternity was founded at washington and lee univer sity in 1914 and includes fifteen chapters the majority of them being southern institutions the founders believed that since there were national honorary organizations which recognized ability in many of the college ac tivities there should be one which recognizes leadership re gardless of in what line it may be attained at the installation ceremonies four faculty mem bers and eighteen students from graduating class and the present senior class who had shown the qualities of leadership in one or more of the branches will hold its first meet ing of the current year this society is the oldest society in the school and is unique in the fact that for the past several years it has had 100 per cent membership of all those taking the chemical engineering and the chemical courses at the present time there are 138 ch e.s and chemists in the school and a large number of them have enrolled already the chemical society holds meetings once every month at which some speaker of note is always present in addition to the speaker delivering an ad dress a light luncheon is also served and by thus combining serious subjects with social af fairs a better feeling is brought about between the students and con on page 4 col 5 the lehigh second soccer team lost its first game to the liberty high school soccer team on the latter's field wednesday afternoon by the score of 3-1 the playing was very evenly matched during the first three quarters of the game but in the last quarter the liberty boys came through with two goals and the game the entire last half was play ed during a heavy rain ; and this couped with the slipperi ness of the field slowed up the speed and accuracy of both teams during the first half liberty lost a good chance to in crease her lead when she missed two goals and after each miss lehigh recovered the ball and put it in the middle of the field out of danger in the third quarter guerrero right fullback had to be taken out of the g-ame on account of an injury to his knee up until that time he had con on page 3 col 4 twenty-five sophomo res elected to membership this year first that will sally out on the upper field on saturday to meet their opponent swarth more for the first league game of the season it is for a two fold purpose first to revenge themselves for the defeat suffer ed last year and second to start off the league season with a bang last year at swarthmore these ancient rivals met on a cold winter day and played the game on a field covered with two inches of snow all during the game snow fell and at the pnd lehigh emerged on tne short end of a three to nothing score this incidentally was the only leapue game swarchmore won and the contest was the only league game that lehigh lost so both teams ended th sea?lm with the same standing i■-•i ■-• the leaguo the team this year is much stronger than last year's aggre gation despite the defeat handed out by perm last satur con on page 4 col 4 delegates from all parts of coutry to meet here on oct 1 6 and 17 pr©gram announced subscribe now the try-outs for the glee club were held on monday october 5 under the direction of t edgar shields mr shields has recent ly been chosen as director and coach of the glee club his stat us as a musician is firmly estab lished and he should produce a good glee club he is known as an accomplished organist pian ist and chorus leader his chor uses are very well known thru out this part of the country for their excellent work the ma terial is very promising as there are about 60 men out for the club some of the men seemed to have good quartet material the men who made the club reported for practice on thurs day october 15 the list of men was posted wednesday oc tober 14 on the various bulletin boards any men who have not tried out yet and would like to should report for their trial at the first rehearsal as soon as possible also men who think that they should have another trial because they had a cold or something else interfered when they had their initial try-outs con on page 3 col 4 the orchestra will be directed by mr leonard luckenbach he is also a man of musical repute around this vicinity he is lead er of the bethlehem symphony orchestra which is one of the foremost musical organizations in bethlehem and ranks with j heat no x the story of the manu facture of wire rope the pic ture covered the making of steel in the open hearth furnace roll ing the ingots into blooms roll ing the blooms into rods draw notice ! a short college meeting will be held tomorrow morn ing shortly before noon at the flag pole con on page 3 col 4 the editors of the burr are rapidly compiling their material for the first issue of the burr which will go to press today as has been the policy in former years this issue will be known as the freshmen number the men in charge hope to be able to distribute this first issue of the con on page 4 col 6 phi sigma kappa national fraternity will hold its annual atlantic regional conclave at bethlehem on october 16 and 17 sixteen chapters and the alumni clubs of new york bal timore washington pittsburg and philadelphia will send rep wednesday evening the soph omore cotillion club of the class of 27 held its final meet ing the main purpose of this meeting was to elect the new members from the class of 28 as per custom the old organiza tion elects twenty-five new men to the club and then turns the society over to them and they in turn elect twenty-five more thus making the
