musical clubs a meeting of the mandolin club was held on sunday at 2.30 p ivi at the chi psi lodge about twenty men were present with as many in ■struments including besides violins guitars and mandolins the valuab'e addition of two flutes in the hands of brown 04 and learning 05 several attractive pieces were tried in preparation for the minstrel show which will contain three numbers by the mandolin club the men are rapidly getting into shape under the leadership of morgan 03 and the prospects for a successful season are of the brightest the glee club also held a meet ing on sunday afternoon but the turn-out was hardly as satisfactory as that of the mandolin club only about a dozen men appeared at the delta u house at the appointed time and this number included no new candidates the afternoon was chiefly devoted to the learning of two new songs which are pro nounced most effective reese 03 led with his usual enthusiasm and the men present made up in earnest effort what was lacking in numbers 1 the first of this year's series of jniversity lectures was delivered n the physical laboratory last fri lay morning by mr theodore mar mrg of baltimore the large ecture room was completely filled uid the speaker was heartily ap ilauded at the conclusion of his very nteresting and instructive lecture n the subject of shorter hours or labor president drown introduced the speaker as one peculiarly well fitted o deal with the subject in hand : he 3eing a deep thinker and writer on social and economic reform and a 3iie time large employer of labor mr marburg after expressing lis pleasure at being invited to ad lress the students of lehigh started 3ff by saying that some problems re quire instinct rather than statistics for solving and that the labor prob lems are largely of this class this is because they are so greatly com plicated by the intangible forces of social dynamics that is by sudtle in fluences at play beneath the appar ently simple exterior he then went on to speak of the wonderful devel opments in all realms of knowledge up to and especially during the pres ent century which he compared to the rennaissance and the eliza bethan age in its startling progress improved facilities for quick trans portation and communication of news ; the introduction of automatic machinery ; the multiplication of the mental moral and physical needs of the masses and of the individual ; all these things have complicated the labor question he said that the solving of the problem of greater supply hy means of automatic machinery and labor saving devices has left perhaps greater problems in its wake it is not good that a people should have things too easy as it is only by con tinual struggle that man is kept from degenerating to the labor ing man the new regime means in creased wages and chances for greater advancement this is true although in individual cases a man may lose his position because of some new machine it is a case of the survival of wyoming's gains were made around the end in which they had a fine interference the game started at 3.15 and in five minutes the first touchdown was made by maxwell after a second touchdown had been scored the scrub advanced the ball to wyom ing's 20-yard line but were stopped on downs fast rushes soon carried the ball to the other end of the field for a third touchdown a few min utes of play remained during which wyoming reached the scrub's five yard line when time was called the second team took a brace in the second half and on one occasion made 40-yards with the ball but were stopped on downs a drop kick lehigh o dickinson 11 one of the hardest fought foot 1 ball games that has been seen on 1 lehigh field in many a day oc curred last saturday afternoon 1 when lehigh was beaten by dickin son by a score of 11-0 the game { from the beginning of the first half j to the end of the last was hotly con : tested 1 the team from carlisle out ' weighed the lehigh team by a large margin and as a result they were ] strong on the offensive their play ■ing on the defensive however was not as good as that of the home team the varsity was greatly handicapped by the absence of a number of and lost it in the center of the field from here by steady line plunges they pushed the ball down the field for a touch down no goal fuller was taken out and galvin put in again le high kicked off to dickinson but they were unable to make their five yards and kicked macfarlane fumbled the kick and dickinsin got the ball on their forty-five-yard line and advanced it to lehigh's twenty yard line where they were held for downs lehigh kicked to her own thirty-five yard line dickinson took the ball to lehigh's fifteen-yarc line where they were again held dickinson kicked a goal from the field
