1906 class meeting at a meeting of the freshman class on december first the follow ing were elected to class offices : todd vice president van dyne secretary butler treasurer adams ath rep ; ives historian these together with president torrey make uo the officers for the present college year announcement of this meeting was posted in to review the foot ball season of 1902 recalling as it does few dis appointments and many happy sur prises is indeed a pleasant task and what is here to be told will show a happy variance from a simi lar account which appeared in these columns about a year ago six games showing points above 30 to lehigh's credit and an all impor tant 6 on the right side of the la fayette score show in a measure what has been done and what has not been done had best be forgot ten in the light of future results the iirst important event of the season was the engagement of dr new ton as coach with many years ex perience in the development of foot i>all teams — in fact everything that pertains to college foot ball dr newton seemed to realize at once the difficulties which would confront review of the season calendar made from comparative scores and the outcome was in doubt until the j referee's whistle sounded at the be j ginning of the first half but never | thereafter was there much doubt as j the final score of 34-6 in lehigh's favor indicates v irginia's single touchdown was made in the dark j against a team half substitutes and ; shows little strength on their part ! dickinson was played with many \ cripples on the side lnes and the consequent defeat 0-11 could hardly have been averted dickinson played an excellent game while le high seemed to lack interest the following saturday came the ! game of games with lafayette and \ everybody knows the score was 6-0 in lehigh's favor the work of the team on offense and defense was i almost perfect and brush's 30-yard ; run for a touchdown was the result of splendid interference and con j certed help of every man on the puted success and the thanksgiv team the season was now an undis '■friday dec 5 — at 11.30 a m college meeting in physical lab oratory ■saturday dec 6 at 8.30 p m college banquet in bethlehem market house . sunday dec 7 — at 6.15 p m y m c a meeting in christmas hall away somewhere underneath the brown and white jerseys which struggled that day on franklin field the following saturday prince ton was lehigh's opponent and the defeat was the worst of the year in the first half lehigh v/hiie unable to advance the ball success ally dis played an almost perfect defense al lowing no score but in the second j half a long run and a fumbled punt seemed to take the heart oat of the ' team and thereafter things were | easy for princeton the final score 1 • i being 23-0 october 1 1 brought rutgers to lehigh field and gave the college their first sight of the team which represented them the result was all that could be desired 34 points being rolled up against the boys from new brunswick but the annapolis game oct 18 was looked upon as the real test of the team's form and the outcome was one of the severest disappoint packer hall and as well was made mention of in two lectures but in spite of all these measures only a very small percentage of the class was present when the meeting was called to order business was proceeded with promptly and the elections carried out smoothly after the above offices were filled the meeting was adjourned notice there will be an important col lege meeting on friday december 5 at 11.30 a m the harvard university faculty recently decided to confer the de gree of master of science in the architectural course stanford university students are in a fair way to organize a college boating association a department of athletics hitherto neglected there ing game with swarthmore was only a finishing touch to a great piece of work the touch was well put on and 41-0 was added to ihe end of the season's scores first praise for the team second praise for dr newton and gr at praise for them all may next year be as successful ! association notes the meeting sunday evening will be a students meeting in which one can take part without special pre paration there should be a large attendance at this first meeting after the thanksgiving holidays bible classes meet at the usual time professor stewardson's class meets at 4.15 sundays while there has been a very satisfactory num ber taking professor stewardson's lectures on old testament criticism 1 there is still room for others foot ball squad him and proceeded from the yen | first to provide as far as possible | against them the earliest result of his policy was the first prelimi nary practice lehigh has known in many years in response to mdi j vidual notifications and compelled \ by various and sundry summer j schools some twenfy-five candi dates appeared for practice on sep j tember 2 two weeks were spent in building up the physical condi tion of the men but with the open ing of college and the consequent addition of new men to the squad real foot ball was commenced as is natural few complicated forma tions could be perfected in time for the first game with pennsylvania sept 27 but the result 12-0 while poor considering the future per formances of both teams was gen erally satisfactory and showed that good foot ball material was stowed merits of the season lehigh suc ceeded in scoring 5 points early in the game and held her advantage until it seemed over and won how ever with only 20 seconds to play the navy made a touchdown on a fumbled punt and a tie score was the best then possible score 5-5 new york university union and haverford were next encountered and proved to be little more than practice games for lehigh the team seemed now to be striking its pace and scores of 46-0 41-0 and 39-0 were easily made against these institutions formerly supposed from a foot ball standpoint to be in le high's class graduates all over the country began to hold up their heads and to read the sunday newspapers without fear on saturday nov 8 virginia was played in washington " no prediction of the result could be lehigh university south bethlehem pa thursday december 4 1902 no 20 the brown and white vol x
