debating league between that institiution and lehigh the society decided to wait until next year to do this as there is already enough work of that charac ter outlined for this year a propo sition of a similar nature from state college was also read but this one was declined for several reasons mainly because state college is so far away after the society had decided nof to insert a new cut in graydon of harvard 1904 epitome request for literaay and artis tic contributions the epitome board wishes again to call the attention of the college to the necessity of having literary and artistic support from the undergrad uates the standard of the literary department and the artistic work of the book depend almost entirely on the students who possess talent in either of these lines and without their assistance it is impossible for the editors to issue an annual which will be a credit to the college hence they earnestly appeal for liberal sup port in these matters and trust tht response will be liberal the prizes offered should act as an incentive to work in addition to the fact that thereby one is materially helping the college during the leisure hours of the christmas recess many fellows will be able without any great in convenience to do some work either literary or artistic and in order that the urgent need of such support on their part should be fresh in their memory this appeal is made at this time immediately before the vaca tion as previously announced all articles in competition must be in be fore feb 10 to receive considera tion and the earlier they are received the better the board is making a special effort to issue the book not later than the first week of may and to do this all copy must be placed in their hands at a sufficiently early date so those intending to sketch or write should take special pains to finish their work before february so far very few gags have been handed in although the students have been especially requested to help the board in this respect whose work in this part of the annual is necessarily limited this is a fea ture which strongly interests every reader of the epitome but for the success of it the editors must rely on the students the gag box in packer hall is placed there for this purpose and for every student to hand in three or four local jokes comical happenings or sayings would be only a slight individual ef fort but would assure the success of this department it is to be hoped that the students will bear this in mind and that each one will help the board in this important respect new henley rule at a meeting of the henley re gatta committee held saturday it was decided by a vote of 13 to 2 to exclude all crews coached by pro fessionals within a month of the opening of the regatta the text of the rule adopted is as follows : no eight-oared four-oared or pair-oared crew shall be allowed to compete if within four weeks prior to the commencement of the regatta the crew shall have been coached during any practice in rowing or controlled or directed in their train ing by any person not considered an amateur oarsman sculler or cox swain under the general rules while the resolution adopted by the henley stewards does not speci fically bar foreign crews from com peting in the regatta it is generally regarded as practically shutting ou ( visitors as it is considered hardly likely that oarsmen from other coun tries will be prepared to change their established customs in order to ac quire the privilege of competing at henley growth of the young men's christian association since a large per cent of students and faculty are directly interested in the welfare of the young men's christian association a word here regarding its progress will not be out of place while lase year the period be tween the opening of college and the holidays showed a decided in crease in all departments over the preceding year the same period for this year shows a corresponding growth the association was able to get out the best hand book in its history for distribution among new and old men the work of assisting the in coming class was better organized than ever and a larger per cent of the class helped the reception to new men al though held on a night most unfav orable was attended by one hundred and forty men an increase over a year ago seventy men have already identi fied themselves with the association since college opened being an in crease of thirty per cent over the same period for last year the aver age attendance at bible classes of fifty shows an increase of fifty per cent over last year while the aver age attendance of sixty-seven at sunday evening meetings exceeds that of a year ago by twenty-five per cent already thirty dollars have been collected on the systematic giving plan to be used in supporting mr c w harvey the pennsylvania representative on the foreign field this sum nearly equals the amount raised throughout the whole of last year this steady growth of the asso ciation is most encouraging to those who have worked so hard and have sacrificed so much to put the work on a strong and permanent basis but the interest in the movement as expressed by trustees alumni and friends has been no less encourag ing the words of mr h f j porter 78 are typical of the senti ments expressed by a number of others he says : i am thoroughly in accord with the movement which you have es tablished so successfully and which will prove of great value not only to the students of the university but to its interests at large the development of character in men is getting to be the main feature of a college education and in such devel opment the organization which you have established at lehigh can take an important part
