the sunday evening meeting of the y m c a was addressed by dr davis the physical director the meeting was well attended and the address of the doctor very much appreciated alumni rev a j bailey a 8 98 of paterson n j was married jan uary 14 1903 to miss deborah van buren of the same place epitome awards for literary work first prize 5-oo second prize 3.00 third prize an epitome for artistic work first prize 5.00 second prize 3.00 third prize . an epitome r s landron c e 99 is road supervisor of public works dis trict of mayaguez porto rico c e martinez c e 01 is as sistant engineer in the engineering department of the street paving and park department havana cuba basket ball games varsity and sophomores piay on friday the basket ball team journeyed up to wilkes-barre where they played the ninth regi ment team that evening and then crossing the river on saturday they played a game with wyoming seminary in the afternoon while the trip resulted in no victories the first game being a defeat and the second tie still it brought no dis grace to lehigh the brown and white team put up a fine game better than their opponents in both cases and that they were unable to win was unfortnuate to say the least but the circumstances unde r which they played were too great to be overcome even by their ex cellent playing on friday evening the armory at wilkes-barre was crowded several lehigh almuni were there and al though the odds were great the cheering for lehigh was easily equal to that for the ninth ; in the second half it was vastly superior to the other for when it was seen what a magnificent game the boys from south bethlehem were playing the entire crowd united in urging them on to victory the ninth regi ment has a good team without doubt and playing on the floor which they have they should be able to defeat any visiting team which might come up against them the floor was so slippery that the lehigh players could hardly keep their feet on it even standing still and all of them have innumerable bruises and scars to remind them of the falls they had in that game on friday night the ninth regi ment boys could not compore with lehighw hen it came to passing the ball but in moving about that floor they had the visitors entirely out classed so that it was not at all dif ficult for them during the first half to throw ten field goals while le high got only two each side getting a goal apiece from fouls ; the strange part about it was that the score was not more one-sided even than just 21 to 5 in the sec ond half when lehigh had become slightly accustomed to the slippery floor the ninth was able to score only six field-goals while the visi tors obtained three and one from o foul the final score was 33 to 12 lehigh has no cause to feel ashamed of her basket ball team on account of this defeat her team is a fine one as has been proved in the past on third page l w club sunday afternoon january 18 1902 there was a meeting of the lehigh williamsport at the phi delta theta house during prev ious years this club has had a page in the epitome with simply the names of the members it was de cided at this meeting to insert two cuts one of the williamsport high school from which most of the williamsport men come and one of the dickinson seminary which also sends students to this univer sity richards interesting lecture by prof the regular meeting of the e e society which was held last thurs day evening in the physical labor tory was very well attended the routine business was dispensed with and the entire time given to pro fessor richards who delivered his lecture on the electro-chemical industries at niagara falls presi dent wolcott introduced him and mentioned the fact that the speak er's close connection with and knowledge of electro-chemistry in united states especially fitted him to tell of the industries founded upon that science dr richards began by saying that electro-chemistry is based upon the use of the electric current for chem ical purposes investigations in this direction began early in the nine teenth century and many thermo chemical processes and ideas were discovered in the laboratory before 1865 but they could not be used commercially as there was no wav of producing large electric currents with the invention of the dynamo however this difficulty was over come and advance steps have been token rapidly since then in the application of electricity tc chemical uses great power is the first requisite and at niagara falls they have power in abundance and it is very cheap for that reason as well as being finely situated geo graphically that place has become and will remain the greatest electro chemical center in the world all these industries at the falls are but the application to comme cial purposes of a number of pro cesses which have been known to chemists and physicists for a good many years in one of them use is made of sir humphrey davy's dis covery that a fused salt having electric current passed through it is decomposed common salt is sub jected to this treatment and in this industry the economic feature of electro-chemistry is particularly no ticeable ; for from a ton of this com mon salt which costs 3.50 there is produced 40.00 worth of chlorine used in making bleaching powder and 30.00 worth of sodium from which caustic soda is easilv made another important process is that of making a alumninum by using the electric current to decompose fused al 2 0 which has been dis solved in an electrolyte of a double fluoride of alumninum and sodium when mr hall invented this pro cess the metal was selling for 8.00 a pound now it is 33 cents there are several other impor tant processes that might be men tioned namely the manufacture of graphite from finely ground anthra cite coal and the reduction of galena to spongy lead and the production of potassium chlorate and caustic soda from their respective chlorides continued on second page no 28 the brown and white lehigh university lehigh smoker south bethlehem pa monday january 29 1903 vol x electro metallurgy to be held at philadelphia on the evening of friday janu ary 23 a grand smoker will be given by the lehigh club of philadelphia at the university club of that city the entire top floor of this building has been secured for the occasion and every effort is being made to make the smoker the event of years a program has been arranged which promises great enjoyment to those so fortunate as to be present like every other well ordered pro gram it is divided into two parts the first to consist of professional entertainment while the second will be given over to the talented among the members of the club and their guests among the fea tures of the first part are in cluded an impersonator a banjo specialist a juggler and a magician the second part has not as yet been fully aranged but it will most cer tainly include a selection by pete reese who is a specially invited throughout there will be served a continuous hot lunch and of course it being a smoker there will be refreshments for all but the greatest inducement of fered is that it will be a purely le high affair to infuse the proper into the men of the old days an effort is being made to induce as many undergraduates as possible 10 attend the smoker several have already signified their intention of being present among these being andy farabaugh who will prob ably be given a chance to tell the old men how it happened lehigh songs and yells will be the order or rather the disorder of the evening and if this portion of philadelphia is not painted red it will at least be a decided brown tickets may b obtained from frick or chamberlain 03 at 3.00 each . calendar tuesday january 20 at 4p m basket ball practice in gym wednesday january 21 — at 2 p m mustard and chees trials in christmas hall at 4 p m basket ball practice in gym thusrday jonuary 22 — at 7.30 p m meeting of c e society in forum room at 8.00 p m meeting of m e society in physical laboratory friday january 23 — at 11.30 a m sophomore prize speaking in chapel at 9 p m junior promenade at eagle hotel smoker of philadelphia-lehigh club at philadelphia at 4 p m basket ball practice in gym saturday january 24 — at 8 p m ;
