resolutions of respect on death of e d merkel whereas god in his almighty providence has seen fit to remove from our midst edwin d merkel a member of the class of nineteen hundred and s four of lehigh uni versity and whereas he was always willing and ready to do his duty taking an active part in all class and college exercises being especially esteemed by his instructors and dearly be loved by every one of his class we hereby lose a true friend and class mate therefore be it resolved that we extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family in this their sad bereavement through the loss of their dear son whose prospects were so bright and prom ising and be it further resolved that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the bereaved family placed in the records of the class of nineteen hundred and four and be printed in the brown and white w c macfarlane c s heritage j e sheesley commit tee senior class meeting a short meeting of the senior class was held wednesday at 12.30 the following men were elected the committee to get out . trie senior class book carrier chamberlain eisenhart tunstall walcott the question of class dues was brought tip and it was decided that '" who pay up all dues for junior and senior year shall receive all the privileges of class membership a r glancy was elected class historian five men were nominated for athletic representative at laree who will be voted upon by the col this election is made neces sary by the resignation of eisenhart from this office beginning with the commence ment in june 1903 cornell uni versity will relieve all its professors who reach the age of seventy years luring the calendar year the re tired professors will serve as spec ial lecturers in their respective de partments for a period of : five years the salary for the first year will be that received at the tin^e of retirement after that 1,500 per year . : thirty-three candidates re port for the team candidates for the base ball team thirty-three candidates for the base ball team reported at the gym nasium wednesday afternoon the squad is a good one but there is plenty of room for new men this year's team will lack many of last season's best players among whom are j k lilley captain and catcher p p reese second base man ; education and democracy by horace e beming esq of new york n y new students the following new students have entered the university : e t gott baltimore c e g e fox pittsburg c e a v l guise new york e m j e popper buffalo m e w w delap annapolis royal nova scotia e e m a campbell m e correction in the issue o-f february 12 it was stated that the class of 1900 was the last to 1 issue a class book this statement is incorrect as the class of 1 90 1 issued a book of this kind a party of british educational ists after making inquiries in can ada have decided to establish a training farm in western canada in connection with birkhampstead on a site located between calgary and edmonton if this farm proves successful several others will be es tablished where british youths will receive training south bethlehem pa thursday february 19 1903 junior class action base ball prospects calendar no 34 the brown and white lehigh university forum meeting good attendance and interest ing program the regular meeting of the forum was held in saucon hall last tuesday evening it was the first meeting that has been held since examination week and the at tendance was very good owing to the absence of the secretary the roll call and reading of the minutes of the previous meeting were dispensed with it was decided that at the next meeting another set of prelimi nary trials for the choosing of the team for the franklin and marshall debate would be held on account of the unsatisfactory work shown in the trials held at the last meeting the society also confirmed the ac tion of president goodwin in ap pointing wolcott 03 to fill the va cancy caused b the sickness of lord 03 on the team which is to debate with moravian college on february 26th president goodwin expressed his desire to resign from his office in order that his successor might have some training for the work next fall ; this brought up the question of an amendment to the constitution as to the time for elect ing officers after some discussion both matters were laid on the table the debate for the evening which came next was on the question resolved that the public interest would be best protected by federal ownership and control of rail roads it is the question which is to be discussed in the coming debate moravian college the affir ive side was upheld by jordan 03 and wolcott 03 while hunt 03 and robbinovitz 03 defended the negative the arguments of both sides showed that a good deal of tul worl bad been done in pre paration for the debate while the judges gilmore 03 morgan 04 and fletcher 05 were preparing their decision the rest of the society engaged in a general discussion of the question the president ap ted beaver 04 and whiteside 06 as the program committee for the conii lonth ! ; nore 06 was . nominated for membership after the judges had rendered a unanimous decision in favor of the affirmative side in the debate the iing adjourned at harvard the basket ball man agement offers a silver trophy for the best basket throwing in the first round out of forty-three con testants only one threw five bas kets and only eight threw three or over out of ten chances vol x
